Toys: NECA Adds Deer Head to ‘Evil Dead 2′ Accessories

At this past week’s San Diego Comic-Con, NECA unveiled their Evil Dead 2 horror line featuring three versions of Ash (played by Bruce Campbell is the 1987 film directed by Sam Raimi), alongside a deadite version of Henrietta.

In the previously released images you’ll see all sorts of sweet accessories, but apparently NECA wasn’t finished. This morning the toy company changed their Twitter avatar to the possessed deer that’s featured in the maddening sequence where Ash laughs alongside a heap of furniture.

As revealed, the three Ash figures will be as follows: “Hero Ash,” “Deadite Ash” and “Farewell to Arms Ash”, along with “Henrietta” and her elongated demon head.

Beginning his career as an award-winning commercial director before branching out into features with the films “Mr. Woodcock” and “Lars and the Real Girl” in 2007, Craig Gillespie recently completed his third feature, the highly-anticipated remake of the 1985 vampire classic Fright Night.

He was on hand at last week’s Comic Con convention to talk about the film, which stars Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, David Tennant, Imogen Poots and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Evil Ed.

Highlights From the ‘Locke & Key’ Panel (With A Bonus Rant From Creator Joe Hill on Slasher Films!)

Amid the insanity drummed up by all the higher-profile projects at Comic Con this year, one of the more under-the-radar events at the convention this past week was a screening of the pilot for would-be Fox TV series “Locke & Key” – based on the comic book series created by Joe Hill – and a subsequent panel discussion that featured Hill, artist Gabriel Rodriguez, executive-producers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, director Mark Romanek, writer/executive-producer Josh Friedman, and cast members Jesse McCartney (Tyler Locke) and Harrison Thomas (Sam Lesser).

While some were expecting the presentation of the unaired pilot – which was rejected by Fox for inclusion on their Fall 2011 schedule – to be a bid for pickup elsewhere, it became apparent very early on that that was never the goal of those on the panel.

Comic-Con ’11: More on Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Panel

Just because our fearless leader Mr Disgusting likes Kevin Smith about as much as Southwest Airlines, that doesn’t mean the rest of the Bloody Disgusting crew share his resent-iment. And by the rest, I mean me. The filmmaker garnered a huge fan response at Comic Con on Saturday when he packed out Hall H at Comic Con for his annual Q&A and sneak peek at his horror flick Red State (review).

As well as showing a five-minute death scene and discussing the Westboro Baptists Church-inspired villains, Smith talked about his partner’s involvement in the flick. His wife of 10 years, Jennifer Schwalbac, has appeared in several of Smith’s films, mostly as a villain. Her cameo as a gun-wielding religious fundamentalist in ‘Red State’ was no exception, but Smith said this time he saw her darker side.

Comic-Con ’11: New ‘Father’s Day’ One-Sheet Feels Restrained

This past weekend at Comic-Con, a new poster for Troma’s Father’s Day made the rounds which, quite frankly, is nowhere near as good as the Dude Designs’ one-sheet. The Astron-6 helmed film doesn’t have an official release date, but is said to be coming soon. Take a gander at the new poster inside.

A long, long time ago in a town north of Tromaville, there was a bad, bad man who raped and killed dads. Nobody could stop the fat monster until a mysterious stranger took a stand. Some say he was avenging his own father. Some say he was just crazy. The stranger could not have known the Hell that was to follow…

Red Band Comic-Con Footage for ‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’

Magnet Releasing has unleashed the red band footage shown at the San Diego Comic-Con for Eli Craig’s horror comedy Tucker & Dale Vs Evil (review), which will be opening in limited theaters September 30, with VOD premiering on August 26.

The award winning comedy-horror screened in Sundance last year and stars Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine as a pair of well intentioned Appalachian hillbillies who fall foul of a group of preppy campers. Check out a slew of clips and images.

The pic is a hilariously gory, good-spirited horror comedy, doing for killer rednecks what Shaun of the Dead did for zombies. Tucker and Dale are two best friends on vacation at their dilapidated mountain house, who are mistaken for murderous backwoods hillbillies by a group of obnoxious, preppy college kids. When one of the students gets separated from her friends, the boys try to lend a hand, but as the misunderstanding grows, so does the body count.

Comic-Con ’11: Interview with ‘Darkest Hour’ Director Chris Gorak: It’s “‘Jaws’ [Meets] ’28 Days Later’ With Aliens”

At Comic-Con this weekend I had an opportunity to briefly sit down with director Chris Gorak, who made a splash at Sundance in 2006 with the low-budget indie thriller Right at Your Door and subsequently won a high-profile studio directing gig with the upcoming alien invasion film The Darkest Hour.

Following a short presentation earlier in the day in which Gorak, producers Tom Jacobson and Monnie Wills, and cast members Emile Hirsch, Max Minghella, and Joel Kinnaman presented a first-ever screening of the film’s intriguing theatrical trailer, I met with Gorak one-on-one to get a better idea of what we can expect.

Cast and crew of the latest installment in the Underworld series, subtitled Awakening, were on-hand at Comic-Con this weekend to discuss the new 3D sequel, which is set for release on January 20th next year. The film sees the return of original star Kate Beckinsale – who wasn’t in the last movie for obvious reasons – as the sexy, leather-clad vampire assassin Selene.

The drop-dead gorgeous star, wearing a short black dress that showed off her shapely, impressively toned legs, came by to chat with us briefly to discuss coming back to the franchise sans her Underworld 1 and 2 director (and now husband) Len Wiseman.

Comic-Con ’11: Kevin Smith Teases Hall H With ‘Red State’

He may have already taken it on a national tour, but Kevin Smith proved there’s still plenty of audience interest in Red State (review). Thousands of fans packed out Hall H at Comic Con this afternoon for Smith’s annual Q&A where he talked about his first foray into the horror genre and showed five minutes of “spoileriffic footage.”

The writer/director said ‘Red State’ was his attempt at trying to make a movie like Quentin Tarantino and something “outside my comfort zone.

Until ‘Red State’ I didn’t have the balls to do it and try to make a movie like Quentin or the Coen Brothers,” he said.

‘Red State’ was my way to homage those types of movies and what they do.

It was so fucking artistically liberating man, because it’s the movie no one expects from you.

It was like I was a talking dog, people would be like ‘stop the pop culture references, people are dying!’

You’re not supposed to pump your own shit, but it’s fucking dope.

Smith took the unconventional approach of self-distributing the film by playing it at select cinemas nationally with Q&A’s after each screening. The filmmaker said although ‘Red State’ has been released outside of the “studio system”, it has found an audience.

I’ve been making movies for two decades man and I know one thing – people will see it eventually,” he said.

There are several dates still on the ‘Red State’ tour and a two week run at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema, Los Angeles. Smith said the film has already “cleared almost a million bucks” in merchandise alone. Inspired by religious fundamentalists, the film was made for $4 million and stars John Goodman, Kyle Gallner, Michael Angarano and Melissa Leo.

Smith said the profit from ‘Red State’ will allow him to finance his final film – hockey comedy ‘Hit Somebody’ – which he estimates will cost between 15 – 20 million. It’s set to start filming at the beginning of 2012 in Detroit.

Lucifer and Michael, God’s greatest archangels, share the bond of extraordinary friendship until God produces his greatest creation: Man. Unable to remain subservient to God if it means bowing down to humanity, Lucifer begins his dark descent and is cast out – only to plot his revenge.

Q&A Highlights From ‘Chillerama’ Debut At Comic-Con

While some filmmakers might panic or throw a tantrum if everything wasn’t going perfect on the night that their new film showed to the public for the first time, Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Adam Rifkin, and Tim Sullivan were in good spirits and even making jokes about a potential disaster in process – Chillerama wasn’t actually there at the time it was set to start! In an effort to have the most updated/near complete version of the film possible, producer Jason Miller (who has been also handling a lot of the FX shots) was driving the latest cut from Los Angeles down to San Diego, and was stuck in some traffic. So instead of a post-film Q&A, the four filmmakers talked and took a few questions BEFORE the film, a situation as unconventional as the film itself. Here are some of the highlights!

Comic-Con ’11: ‘Knights of Badassdom’ Trailer is ‘Army of Darkness’ Meets Heavy Metal!

It’s official: The Knights of Badassdom wins the San Diego Comic-Con…

My Twitter feed exploded during the Hall H panel for Joe Lynch’s The Knights of Badassdom. The buzz was beyond positive, so much so that it dwarfed the big comic-themed movies of the Con. Jealousy ensued — at least until a minute ago when the official Facebook posted the hilarious, gory, and most definitely epic trailer that screams “Army of Darkness meets heavy metal.” ROCK ON BELOW to watch the trailer and then tell us what YOU think of the footage…

In this comedic fantasy adventure, Joe (Ryan Kwanten) is a heavy metal rocker who’s just gone through a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). His concerned roommates (Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage) kidnap him to their LARP (Live Action Role Playing) gathering, where he enters a realm of fantasy escapism in which pretend knights, elves, and barbarians clash with foam weaponry on a mock battlefield. When Joe’s “sorcerer” roommate (Zahn) inadvertently summons a deadly succubus that takes Beth’s seductive form, bloody reality crashes down upon their fantasy world. Once LARPers start to turn up dead, the make-believe wizards and warriors must join forces with other adventurers (Summer Glau, Danny Pudi) to become the real life heroes they have been pretending to be and conquer the unleashed evil.

Comic-Con ’11: New Mondo Prints For ‘The Divide’ And ‘Cowboys & Aliens’

Earlier this week, we gave out a few tickets for a special Comic-Con screening of Xavier Gans’ The Divide, which happens to be one of my favorite genre films of 2011 so far. The one-of-a-kind viewing experience, which took place last night, was held in an environment that mimics the setting and experience of the characters in the film, who narrowly survive a nuclear attack and become holed up in a basement.

In addition to seeing the movie six months early, attendees were treated to a cocktail party and a limited edition Mondo print with artwork by Jock. We have your look at the art inside, along with Daniel Danger’s Cowboys & Aliens screen print.

In addition, inside we got our hands on some pretty cool production art, along with the previously released official still featuring Emile Hirsch taking Moscow by storm.

Comic-Con ’11: Francis Ford Coppola Plans 30-City Tour for 3-D Horror ‘Twixt’

Francis Ford Coppola hasn’t been to Comic-Con to promote one of his projects since Bram Stoker’s Dracula, in 1992. But the helmer took the stage in Hall H again, Saturday morning, to discuss his latest horror pic, Twixt, a self-produced pic that stars Val Kilmer, Ben Chaplin and Elle Fanning, and is a story based on a dream he once had.

In the horror flick, “A writer with a declining career arrives in a small town as part of his book tour and gets caught up in a murder mystery involving a young girl. That night in a dream, he is approached by a mysterious young ghost named V. He’s unsure of her connection to the murder in the town, but is grateful for the story being handed to him. Ultimately he is led to the truth of the story, surprised to find that the ending has more to do with his own life than he could ever have anticipated.

Comic-Con ’11: Concept Art for ‘Seventh Son’ and ‘Paradise Lost’

The boys over at Cinemablend decided to take photos of the concept art on display at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for upcoming Warner Bros. films (you know, the panel for three non-comic films that aren’t even shot yet).

One of the two projects is Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost, the Bradley Cooper-starrer that will be shot using motion capture technology. The project tells the story of the epic war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer, and will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D. Inside you’ll find the concept art featuring some of the rough terrains being conceptualized.

Also shared with the Comic-Con audience was art for Sergei Bodrov’s The Seventh Son, starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander. Barnes will star as “Tom Ward”, a young boy training to be an exorcist in the 1700′s and must learn how to exorcise ghosts, contain witches, and bind boggarts. Trouble begins when he’s tricked into releasing the most evil witch in the world. Jeff Bridges has signed on to star as an exorcist. The Seventh Son was formerly known as The Spook’s Apprentice and is part of Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ adaptation of Joseph Delaney’s young adult series “The Last Apprentice.” It is based on the first book in the trilogy “The Wardstone Chronicles.”

Comic-Con ’11: Original ‘Dark Shadows’ Cast to Cameo in Feature!

Sometimes bringing back an original cast can be disengaging (see all of Rob Zombie’s movies), but other times it actually sounds like a brilliant idea. Hermes Press hosted a Dark Shadows panel at the San Diego Comic-Con with Lara Parker (Angelique), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans and Josette du Pres), Jim Pierson (consulting producer for the new Dark Shadows film), and the son of series creator Dan Curtis. The big reveal was that four of the original cast members will be making cameos in Tim Burton’s new film!

Daniel Herman (publisher, Hermes Press) moderated, and Parker and Scott were just about bursting at the seams to share the news that they, along with both David Selby (Quentin Collins) and, yes, the much beloved Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins) spent three days at Pinewood Studios during the filming of Burton’s upcoming Dark Shadows movie. They will all be making cameos, but the real highlight for the quartet was being able to thank Johnny Depp (who plays Barnabas in the new version) for all the kind words and tributes he has given the 45-year-old show, especially as it relates to Frid and his performance. The icing on the cake was Depp telling Frid in person, “None of this would be here if it wasn’t for you.” – as reported by The Woman In Black.

Warners has slotted the film for release on May 11, 2012.
