[TV Bites] “Cult” Pulled From Schedule, Say Hello To SyFy’s Jamie Foxx Horror Anthology

CW’s “Cult,” which premiered on February 19th, has been pulled from the network’s schedule. Per THR, “The freshman dud starring The Vampire Diaries’ alum Matt Davis has been completely removed from the network’s schedule, according to program listings The CW released Wednesday.

While it doesn’t look good for the series, there’s always the possibility that the remaining episodes could be shown “on other platforms.” So maybe On Demand or iTunes? They weren’t clear.

In more positive news, the SyFy Channel has announced a new horror anthology series from Jamie Foxx. Yep. And he’s going to write, produce and direct 5 episodes of it. It doesn’t have a title yet, so I’m just going to call it the Untitled Jamie Foxx Horror Anthology Series for now. Per Deadline, it will be in the vein of “Tales From The Crypt” and “The Twilight Zone” and will be exec produced by Troy Miller “Flight Of The Conchords”.

“Cult” Episode 1.01 – “You’re Next” (premiering 2/19/13, 9-10 pm): “Investigative journalist Jeff Sefton (Davis) has learned to live with his younger brother Nate’s (guest star James Pizzinato “Alcatraz”) relentless string of obsessions, especially his latest rant that a hit TV show called “Cult” intends to harm him. When his brother mysteriously disappears, Jeff enlists Skye Yarrow (Jessica Lucas; Cloverfield, “Melrose Place”), a young research assistant working on “Cult,” to help with his investigation into the dark underworld of the TV show and its rabid fans.

Meanwhile, in the parallel worlds of the show-within-a-show, the cult’s ruthless leader, Billy Grimm, is played by actor Roger Reeves (the double role of Billy/Roger is played by Robert Knepper (“Prison Break,” “Shameless”), a man whose primary agenda is winning back his former follower and lover, Kelly Collins, played by actress Marti Gerritsen (the double role of Kelly/Marti is played by Alona Tal (“Supernatural,” “The Killing”). Since escaping from the cult, Kelly has become an LAPD detective who finds herself drawn back into an investigation of the group’s activities as she struggles to keep Billy at a safe distance. As the television show grows in popularity, cast members Roger and Marti begin to feel the effects in their “real” lives.

Jason Ensler directed the episode written by Rockne S. O’Bannon.

Forget what you heard about #TheCW developing #BattleRoyale,” says the mag, “CW boss Pedowitz says it was a single phone call that went nowhere. #tca13

Nice of them to have a single phone call, alert the press, break the news, and then back-peddle. I call bullshit on that. Bullshit or not, it isn’t happening anymore, so back to sort of caring about The Hunger Games

[TV] CW’s ‘Hunger Games’-Inspired “Sick”

Deadline reports on a new series about a world where youths are quarantined after a mysterious virus makes adults allergic to teenagers.

The CW has bought the spec, titled “Sick.”

Described as a provocative cross between Contagion and The Hunger Games, it centers on a band of teens who escape from their containment units and go on the run from authorities. It also sounds a bit like Battle Royale, which CW had originally planned as a series.

Trey Callaway and Sean Hood – best known for his genre work on Halloween: Resurrection, “Fear Itself” and “Masters Of Horror” – wrote the script.

The network’s first effort this development season is “Deadman,” a drama based on the DC Comics books by Arnold Drake and Carmine Infantino, which will be written and executive produced by “Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke, reports Deadline.

‘Deadman’ is the ghost of a murdered circus acrobat, Boston Brand, who has the power to possess the living in order to seek out his killer, as well as to help the innocent.” It is produced by Warner Bros. TV, which handles the mining of the DC catalog for TV series.
