NOS4A2

[Book Review] ‘Tis The Season For Joe Hill’s ‘NOS4A2′

It’s been a busy year for Joe Hill. Not only did the oldest son of Stephen King conclude his beloved Locke and Key comic book series, but his 2010 novel, Horns, is currently being adapted into a Alexander Aja-directed flick starring Daniel Radcliff. Seriously, it’s amazing the dude has managed to take a break from Twitter long enough to write a hulking beast of a novel like NOS4A2. Hill’s 700-page spine-buster––about a woman’s decades-spanning fight against an ageless kiddie snatcher––manages to mix dark fantasy and horror into a wicked concoction that’s part twisted fairy tale, part re-exploration of vampirism (‘NOS4A2’ is a vanity plate reference to ‘Nosferatu’.) One of the most anticipated novels of the year, NOS4A2 will be released by William Morrow on April 30.

Joe Hill is no Christmas lover. Just check NOS4A2 for proof, where vampiric antagonist Charlie Manx whisks kids away to a nightmare realm called Christmasland to have their conscience drained away. In Christmasland, sparkly glass ornaments hang from trees, the scent of gingerbread lingers in the air, and hook-toothed children giggle as they dismember butterflies, all while Bing Crosby sings holiday classics in the background. Hill’s terrible, grotesque netherworld gleefully perverts the spirit of the season. As the author recently told Complex clothes catalog, “If there was a war on Christmas, I would be the general advancing on it.”

Victoria is the only person qualified to stop Charlie Manx’s reign of terror, although at the beginning of NOS4A2, she’s only 8-years-old. Early on Vic discovers she has the ability to travel to faraway places using a covered bridge that magically appears when she pumps the pedals of her Tuffburner bike. Initially using her bridge to find lost objects for their owners, Vic unintentionally uses the bridge to travel to the nightmarish Christmasland, where she’s forced into a confrontation with Charlie Manx and his giggling minions.

Years later, Vic worries that the immortal Manx has returned to exact his revenge, and that her 12-year-old son Wayne might be the target. With her Tuffburner bike lost ages ago, Vic fires up a Triumph motorcycle in the hopes of rediscovering her mystical bridge to Christmasland, where she can finally bring an end to Manx’s reign of terror.

Packed with a dark, malevolent whimsy, NOS4A2 is an epic novel from an epic imagination. In fact, Hill introduces enough ideas and characters to fill a half dozen books, and the abundance of plot threads sometimes works to the novel’s detriment. Unless he has plans to turn NOS4A2 into a full-fledged series (and the conclusion certainly leaves that possibility open), Hill ends the book with several avenues regrettably underexplored.

But “too many good ideas” seems like an awfully petty complaint when you consider the sheer talent and originality on display here. At times both joyful and triumphant, NOS4A2 is a Christmas miracle of sorts, a revenge tale crafted from the jagged remains of shattered holiday ornaments.

[News Bites] ‘R.I.P.D’ Being Converted To 3-D; Sarah Snook Travels To ‘Predestination’; Daniel Radcliffe Confirmed For ‘Frankenstein’

Universal Pictures’ R.I.P.D. is getting post-converted to 3-D for its July 19 release. What’s even more interesting is that they’ve been filming additional scenes for months, which begs the question, are they shooting the new scenes in 3-D? I doubt it. Robert Schwentke directs the Dark Horse Comics adaptation in which a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon and Stephanie Szostak star.

Aussie actress Sarah Snook (star of Lionsgate’s Ghosts, directed by Saw 3D’s Kevin Greutert; pictured above) has just landed the lead female role opposite Ethan Hawke in Predestination, a time-travelling sci-fi thriller that reteams Hawke with his Daybreakers writer-directors Peter and Michael Spierig, reports Deadline. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired domestic and some international rights in Cannes to the pic, in which Hawke plays a Temporal Agent who on his final assignment pursues a criminal who has long eluded him. Blacklab Entertainment’s Tim McGahan and Wolfhound Pictures’ Patrick McDonald produce the movie, which is based on a short story by Robert A. Heinlein. Shooting begins April 8 in Melbourne.

Lastly, it was confirmed today long standing news that Harry Potter, Horns and The Woman in Black‘s Daniel Radcliffe, pictured, is in final negotiations to star as Igor in the classic tale Frankenstein for 20th Century Fox and Davis Entertainment, says Variety. Paul McGuigan is on board to direct the gothic feature from a script by Max Landis (Chronicle). Based on Mary Shelley’s 19th century novel, “Frankenstein” is expected to shoot in the fall. READ MORE

Daniel Radcliffe Woke Up Shocked At His Bizarre ‘Horns’ Role

MTV hit up Harry Potter‘s Daniel Radcliffe at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival where they got him to speak briefly on his role in Alexandre Aja’s Horns, as well as his interest in Max Landis’ script for a Frankenstein film.

A few weeks after we finished, I woke up one morning thinking, ‘What was that? What was that film I just did?’ It’s so crazy,” Radcliffe said of working on Horns, where he plays a man who awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realizes their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their impulses. “I feel like I have less concept of what it’s going to be now than when I first started, which is bizarre, but it’s very exciting.

Speaking on the bizarre aspects of the film, “I got to have burn make-up on, and then I got to come out of the Pacific Ocean after having been burned alive and drowned — and I survived that because I’m a boss.

He also confirmed that he’s interest in working on Chronicle scribe Max Landis’ Frankenstein project, which would cast him in a hunchbacked, Igor-type role. “I love that script… but to say it’s in any way an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is probably [not accurate]. It’s a Max Landis script so anyone familiar with his work [will] have some sense of what that means.

Horns is currently in post production. READ MORE

the woman in black 1024x345 Daniel Radcliffe Might Return For The Woman In Black: Angels Of Death

A few weeks ago Hammer revealed the official plot for The Woman in Black: Angels Of Death and now Hammer CEO Simon Oakes is hinting that Radcliffe might return.

Oakes attended a special screening of the first film recently and spoke of the Harry Potter star’s potential involvement. Per Bleeding Cool, “ It would be a small role, by the sound of things. Plainly put, Oakes wouldn’t deny it, went as far as saying Radcliffe “might” appear.” Those who have seen the first film will have a pretty good idea of what capacity he might return in.

In the sequel penned by Jon Croker, “Seized by the government and converted into a military mental hospital during World War II, the sudden arrival of disturbed soldiers to Eel Marsh Harsh has awoken its darkest inhabitant. Eve, a beautiful young nurse, is sent to the house to care for the patients but soon realizes she must save them from more than their own demons. Hammer Horror is a British production company that was birthed in the 50s but died in the 70s. Some of the films they’ve produced were interesting and often more macabre takes on the Universal Monster pictures of the 30s – like The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula AD 1972, and Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb. Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby perhaps being the most critically acclaimed entry. These highly influential films were certainly popular in their day, but Hammer’s popularity waned into the 1980s, where they all but disappeared. READ MORE

‘The Woman In Black’ Scares Up Record-Breaking Numbers In The UK

WomanLandscape10412 The Woman In Black Scares Up Record Breaking Numbers In The UK

THR writes that Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Harry Potter role in British horror flick The Woman In Black has helped scare up record breaking figures for a British fright flick.

The Hammer-produced film, directed by James Watkins and adapted by Jane Goldman from the classic novel by Susan Hill, has spent three weeks at number one in the U.K. boxoffice ringing up a total of £14.6 million ($23.2 million) from 457 screens.

The makers claim those figures make it the U.K.’s highest grossing British horror film since records began 20 years ago.

The movie has now scared up more box office lucre than Hollywood -backed productions shot in the U.K. with British talent including The Others (£11.9 million, $18.9 million), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (£11.5 million, $18.2 million) and Interview with a Vampire (£10.7 million, $17 million), as well as home-grown horrors such as Shaun Of The Dead (£6.7 million, $10.6 million) and 28 Days Later (£6.3 million, $10 million).
