Dark Horse Presents 20

Review: ‘Dark Horse Presents’ #20

As with any anthology, Dark Horse Presents #20 is a bit of a mixed bag. The issue is, by turns, visually delightful, unexpectedly captivating, and occasionally frustrating. There are stories that will leave you yearning for to read more and others that will leave you with that unfulfilled feeling of eating only an appetizer when you’re really craving an entree. Interview: Caitlìn R. Kiernan Gives Riveting Insight into ‘Alabaster: Wolves’

In the “comic-verse,” Caitlìn R. Kiernan is probably most notably known for her work at DC/Vertigo Comics. There, she penned The Dreaming (a spin-off of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman), The Girl Who Would Be Death, and Bast: Eternity Game, as well as contributing to various other titles and story arcs. Although she has done quite a bit of work in comics, she has received high praise for her novels and short stories from names such as Clive Barker, Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, and Poppy Z. Brite.

Now, Kiernan is working on a new series published by Dark Horse Comics, called Alabaster: Wolves. Wolves focuses on Dancy Flammarion, who was once guided by a mystical force to fight and kill various dark creatures, and must now find her own way in the swamps of the deep south, with the cursed monsters still in hot pursuit. Kiernan sat down with us to talk about Alabaster: Wolves, and gave us a peek into what we can expect to see. Read on for the skinny…

OMFG Of The Day: A Star Studded Line-Up Of Titles Makes Up ‘Dark Horse Presents’ Issue #4!

At the end of 2011 it might be fair to say that there isn’t any other publisher who will have done more to put themselves ahead of the game and take themselves to the next level than Dark Horse Comics. The publisher has made great strides these past few months, and we are now only halfway through the year. With a rejuvenated relationship with superstar Joss Whedon (“BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER”, “ANGEL”), the return of “CRIMINAL MACABRE” and “THE GOON”, and a new movie deal for Evan Dorkin’s “BEASTS OF BURDEN”, things couldn’t be much better for the company. Another of those bright spots has been the new and improved “DARK HORSE PRESENTS” monthly, and beyond the break you can check out a 3 page preview of the series’ fourth ish before it hits stands in September. The ‘Beasts Of Burden’ To Infest ‘Dark Horse Presents’ In September!

Most horror fans will probably look at “BEASTS OF BURDEN” and scoff, writing it off as some sort of half-hearted joke and not even making an attempt at giving the series a look after they see the cute little fuzzy animals that adorn the books’ cover. That is why I have chosen to show you all a picture of the little mutts missing half their skin. How’s that for forcing your hands? With that being said, today series publisher Dark Horse Comics announced plans to release an all new story based in the little town of Burden Hill, which will be available in September with the fourth issue of “DARK HORSE PRESENTS”. This announcement coincides with the publisher announcing last week that Steve Niles’ “CRIMINAL MACABRE” would also be featured within the newly relaunched monthlies’ fourth ish. REVIEW: ‘Dark Horse Presents’ Issue #1 Is A Return To Roots

In a modern world where nerve endings are constantly being overloaded by media, indulged in every type of sensory information, and where no piece of art or entertainment is deemed good or even credible unless it’s “ground-breaking,” sometimes it’s best to simply go back to the basics. That is precisely what Dark Horse has done in the reboot of its classic Presents series.

I am certainly one who appreciates innovations in all types of media, and I’ll admit that I tend to read comics that stick out as being unique and original, and because the industry has become flooded with books about Lanterns and Mutants that all seem to have run out of new ideas, I’m sure many readers feel the same way. Because of this, it is nice to be reminded of what comic books really are at their core: simple stories with often ridiculous, but nevertheless engaging, plots. Dark Horse Presents #1 features some terrific writers and artists that pull the reader back to the simpler days and keep this concept alive on every single one of its eighty pages. Yes, EIGHTY pages. DHP #1 is one dense comic book, and at eight dollars for one single issue, readers might be dissuaded from picking it up. I urge you to not be put off by merely by the price, though, for this book contains so many stories that if I described them all, even briefly, this review would last for days. (Seriously…days.)
