I recently hopped on the phone with Bousman to talk about his use of Super 16 in the film, working with Stephen Moyer and his approach to gore as well as the legend of The Jersey Devil.

I caught up with Darren Bousman last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood). He’s had a busy year what with The Devil’s Carnival, Mother’s Day and the upcominng release of The Barrens. So he’s probably taking a little break pretty soon – but not until after The Devil’s Carnival 2.
He told us, “We’re starting pre-production right now. It takes place in Heaven and it’s a lot more dark and f*cked up than the first one that takes place in Hell. So Heaven is a lot darker than Hell in our case. Everyone [from the original] is back and we have a whole new cast of misfits as well.”
Is he keeping up the breakneck pace after that? “No. I’m taking a break. I’m ready to die.” After the break? “The only thing I can talk about is Abattoir. I had a comic book series called ‘Abattoir’ and I’m writing the script [for the film] right now. That’s in the very early stages of pre-production. That would probably be my next movie.”
This year’s Halloween Horror Nights dates are September 21, 22, 28, 29 and October 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31.
Darren Lynn Bousman’s psychological horror The Barrens, which stars Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner, Erik Knudsen, J Larose, Allie MacDonald, Max Topplin and Peter DaCunha, will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray on October 9th. But you can see it theatrically as it opens in limited release on September 28th (it opens next week in Los Angeles, and Florida next Friday). The Devil’s Carnival – the latest musical from Darren Lynn Bousman (Repo: The Genetic Opera, Saw 2-4, Mother’s Day) is headed back out on the road after a successful 40 date tour earlier this year. It all kicks off at 11:59PM on July 13th during the San Diego Comic-Con at the Gaslamp Theatre (tickets here)! We attended the premiere of the event back in April and you are welcome to read our positive recap.
But before the Devil continues his road show, Bloody Disgusting has landed an exclusive clip that ties into a pretty cool promotion. In this scene, Lucifer (Zdunich) reads the classic fable “The Scorpion and the Frog” as the slick and charming Scorpion (Marc Senter) croons “Trust Me” to his gullible frog gal, Tamara (Jessica Lowndes). Aided by the lovely Painted Doll (Emilie Autumn), The Scorpion uses a knife-thrower’s deadly accuracy to strike love into Tamara’s heart. But once she takes his bait, this Lothario can’t help but reveal his true, venomous nature.
In short, creators Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich want to hear your cover of “Trust Me”, a lethal lullaby from their new musical movie. The most infernally inspired videos will be screened in front of thousands on The Devil’s Carnival 24-City EncoreTour! (Tickets for all shows are available here.)
You’ll find the video with more instructions, along with tour info after the break. READ MORE
Anchor Bay Films presents the ultimate “Mother” with the May 8th release of Mother’s Day on Blu-ray+DVD Combo Pack and on DVD. With an all-star cast including Rebecca DeMornay (The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Wedding Crashers), Jamie King (Red Tails, My Bloody Valentine, Sin City), Brianna Evigan (S. Darko, Step Up 2: The Streets), Patrick John Flueger (Footloose, Brothers), Deborah Ann Woll (HBO’s “True Blood”), Lyriq Bent (Saw II-IV, Skinwalkers), Frank Grillo (The Grey, Minority Report) and Shawn Ashmore (the X-Men films, Frozen), Mother’s Day is the chilling and gorier remake of the 1980 Troma classic by the same name.
Mother’s Day will also have an exclusive theatrical engagement in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago on May 4th in select theaters.
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III and IV) with screen story and screenplay by Scott Milam based on the original Mother’s Day written by Charles Kaufman and Warren Leight, Mother’s Day is a graphic remake of the Troma horror classic. “After a bank robbery gone wrong, three brothers go home to hideout…only to discover that their Mother (Rebecca De Mornay) lost their house in a foreclosure. The new owners and their party guests become the depraved brothers’ unwitting hostages. Their sadistic Mother soon arrives and brilliantly takes control of the situation, ratcheting up the terror. As the hostages struggle desperately to survive the harrowing torture, they realize that there is nothing a Mother won’t do to protect her children.”
The Mother’s Day Blu-ray and DVD feature an audio commentary with director Darren Lynn Bousman and actor Shawn Ashmore.

Hitting theatres today is Darren Lynn Bousman’s 11-11-11, a religious horror film centered around today’s date and divination by numbers. Lucky for Bousman, he got the film out today – which I think is pretty neat, even if it’s only in limited release – but, according to our own Evan Dickson, “In a movie with problems this big, normally huge things like dialogue and performance seem like nitpicking. It all comes down to story. If every scene has the same static objective and if 90% of your scenes end with your characters in the same emotional and narrative place with which they began – you don’t have much of a movie.”
Yikes.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t sort of intrigued by the premise (I’m always up for religious horror, if only to see if the film at hand is one of the few that ACTUALLY WORK), but maybe I shouldn’t be so bummed it didn’t make its way down to Orlando.
You can check out Evan’s review here and if you’re in one of the select cities it’s playing in, don’t forget to tell all of B-D what you thought.

I’m a huge fan of religious horror (Exorcist, Omen, Ninth Gate) which is why I’m crazy excited for Rocket Releasing and Big Air Studios’ 11-11-11, Darren Lynn Bousman’s take at a Biblical apocalypse that opens on November 11. While most of the cool stuff has been kept in secret, the Gates of Hell have finally been opened as we’ve landed a handful of demonic imagery (and behind-the-scenes pics) that can be enjoyed after the break.
