[Album Review] Depeche Mode “Delta Machine”

If you follow some of my articles or my twitter (hint hint), you know by now that I’m a huge fan and supporter of UK electronic band Depeche Mode. Since I was a young ‘un adjusting the antenna on my radio to get the local pop/rock radio station (how many of you can say you’ve done that?), their sound and attitude always appealed to me. I don’t know if it was Martin Gore’s fantastic songwriting, Andy Fletcher’s mesmerizing sounds, or Dave Gahan’s incredibly unique and versatile voice (I would probably commit some grave crimes to be able to sing like that man) or if it was simply the group as a whole, but I was always hooked when they came on.

Fast forward some 20 years later and I’m still a fan, as eager to hear new music from them as ever. That’s why I’ve been chomping at the bits for a chance to listen to their latest release Delta Machine. Now, having spun the record several times and thinking about it more than is probably healthy, I’ve come to a rather interesting theory. In my mind, I think that Depeche Mode wanted the listener to go through a religious experience when listening to this album.

If you’re scratching your head and asking yourself, “What the hell is he talking about?”, then I encourage you to head on below to hear me out. And if you have a different theory, I’d love to hear it! READ MORE

Depeche Mode Stream New Song “Heaven”

Electronic band Depeche Mode have released their first single entitled “Heaven”, which comes from their upcoming 13th studio album Delta Machine. You can listen to the song on KROQ.

Songwriter Martin Gore describes the album, saying, “It’s got a bit of a feel of Violator on some of the songs and a feel of Songs of Faith and Devotion on other songs. It’s a bit of a hybrid of those two for me.

Frontman Dave Gahan adds, “With this release we’ve completely shifted our idea of how to create an album. When we hit a wall where we realize the album is beginning to sound too normal, we’ll mess it up and really give it that organic Depeche Mode sound. I am very happy with how the album turned out,” comments Martin Gore. “The music has a similar vibe to Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion and I think the songs on the album are among some of the very best we’ve done.

Dave Gahan Talks New Depeche Mode Album

In an interview with CNN, Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan discussed the upcoming 13th studio album from the band. This album will be the follow-up to 2009′s Sounds Of The Universe.

Gahan stated, “Martin [Gore] got on a writing streak. He’s got some really great songs. We usually start a record with six or seven songs; we currently have about 20.” He went on to add, “The songs have a bluesy influence. Obviously, it’s not a blues record, but there’s definitely some of those influences there. And it has a kind of soulful feel as well. It’s still early so it’s difficult to tell at this stage. We’ve been making records for a long time together, but there’s always an element of surprise when it comes to the way a Depeche Mode record is really going to sound — even for ourselves.”

Gahan also mentioned that the band has approached music video director Anton Corbijn (Nirvana, U2, At The Drive-In, Metallica) regarding visuals.

Playing The Angel is still in my Top 10 albums of all time, so I’m incredibly excited to hear this. READ MORE
