[This Day In Horror] Wes Craven Makes Audiences ‘Scream’!

December 20, 1996.

That was the day Wes Craven’s groundbreaking Scream grabbed the attention of every teen across the Nation. By the end of its 19-week theatrical run, and an eventually re-release, Dimension Films’ slasher raked in a disgusting $100 million (it also made an estimates $70 million internationally).

Penned by Kevin Williamson, Scream featured the young, hip cast of David Arquette, Drew Barrymore, Lisa Beach, David Booth, W. Earl Brown, Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan, Matthew Lillard and Jamie Kennedy. It has since swamped three sequels and a forthcoming rumored television series.

In the film that supposedly used 50 gallons of blood, “A killer known as Ghostface begins killing off teenagers, and as the body count begins rising, one girl and her friends find themselves contemplating the “Rules” of horror films as they find themselves living in a real-life one.

The script was originally titled “Scary Movie,” which provided the jump point for the Wayans’ spoof franchise.

[BD Review] ‘The Cottage’ Is A Cheesy, Stereotypical Thriller

Review by James A. Janisse

The Cottage is a film that preys upon our fears of home invasion, of letting someone into our lives and having that person violate us and our family. David Arquette plays Robert, a quiet romance novelist who moves into the guest house (cottage? I guess) behind the Carpenter family’s house. At first it seems like he’ll be a good match for them – despite their apparent wealth, they claim that they need the extra cash, and Arquette makes a first impression as a quiet and polite, if a little awkward, guy. But this living arrangement quickly turns into a nightmare for the family, especially the pair of teenage daughters, as Robert’s creep signals grow louder and clearer.

This movie is a pretty straightforward suspense film with some culty elements and sacrificial rites mixed in for good measure. It does a good job building the menacing threat that Arquette’s character becomes. Robert’s not exactly consistent and some of his actions seem abrupt, but Arquette works with what he’s given – this man is not an amateur, and his professionalism shows. The family, played by lesser-known actors, keep up with him onscreen, with Kristen Dalton and Victor Browne as the worried parents and real-life sisters Morissa and Alana O’Mara as the angsty teenage girls Danielle and Rose.

Despite the story’s lack of tangents or frills, it still seems cobbled together sometimes. It turns out that Robert is running a harem of petite teenage girls who he’s apparently brainwashed into killing their families and pledging their love to him. There’s not any further explanation given to this side of the story, and it doesn’t necessarily need a whole backstory explained to the audience in precise terms, but the way this plot line is introduced is jarring and inconsistent with how it evolves later on.

Other scenes are apparently pointless at first, like when we see Rose’s social situation at school or Danielle’s romance with her father’s music student. It turns out that these elements are only in place to provide a higher body count later on, during the film’s climax that finally brings Robert’s madness into full light. The scene’s sacrificial wedding unravels into the film’s final moments, when people just start running and driving around the woods without any direction, finally culminating in an ending that lacks resolution or satisfaction.

For quite a while, The Cottage seems like it will be a fulfilling movie. It’s shot well, the cast is talented, and there is some legitimate terror in the fact that Arquette, a guy who exudes a certain sort of slimy sexuality, is within a stone’s throw of these teenage girls and their swimming pool. The fact that it fails in the end is probably because it’s screenwriter Nick Antosca’s first feature film. Or maybe it’s because the film remains relatively timid despite its skeezy antagonist. Had it gone for all-out depravity, it might have ended up being notorious or at least memorable but as it stands, The Cottage is a cheesy stereotypical thriller that squanders the effective set-up it begins with.

The Cottage

The films begins after renting her guest house to a stranger (Arquette), Bree (Dalton) soon discovers he is not the perfect tenant she thought he would be.

Long: Chloe (Dalton) and Michael Carpenter (Brown), a struggling suburban couple, have no idea what they’re in for when they rent out the cottage behind their house to a quiet, charming romance novelist named Robert Mars (Arquette). It appears that Mr. Mars was looking for much more than a place to rent. [Interview] Wes Craven Talks ‘Scream 4′ Blu-ray, Teens, Technology, Violence, and a Smidgen of ‘Scream 5′!

After seeing and reading countless interviews with Wes Craven, I can’t say that I’m surprised that he’s as genial, soft-spoken and erudite as he is. The way his more professorial qualities subvert (but don’t diminish) his status as one of the all-time horror greats is well known at this point. Still, I was more than a little apprehensive about speaking with him this morning. After all, this is the guy who gave us A Nightmare On Elm Street (along with Dream Warriors), The Hills Have Eyes, Shocker, The People Under The Stairs and of course the original Scream trilogy.

Reaching Craven on the East Coast by phone to speak about the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of Scream 4, I found him every bit as thoughtful, polite and engaged as I expected. Sometimes interview subjects are pleasantly surprising. In Craven’s case I simply knew I was going to be speaking with someone who not only loves their craft, but is articulate about it as well. He did not disappoint.

Obviously focussing on Scream 4, we spoke about how technology is affecting the current generation, the casting process, why the fourth film is significantly more violent than the third and much more. There’s even a potential tidbit about Scream 5 waiting for you if you get to the end.

A Double Does of Arquette in Fattening ‘Glutton’

Director David Arquette has tapped his sister Patricia Arquette (Stigmata) and Kacey Barnfield (Resident Evil: Afterlife) to play the two female leads in Remember Dreaming Prods.’ psychological thriller Glutton, reports Variety.

Kenny Yakkel wrote the 3D pic, which stars “ER” alum Abraham Benrubi as a 1,200-pound bedridden man. Arquette will play his sister and caretaker, while Barnfield will play a blind neighbor who’s his only friend.

The pic, which is described as being in the vein of Misery, starts production next month in Canada.

Abraham Benrubi Gains Nearly 1,200 Pounds for ‘Glutton’

Scream 4 (Scream IV, Scre4m)

In theaters April 15, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courtney Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.

The newest installment in the acclaimed franchise that ushered in a new wave of horror in the 1990s is written by series creator Kevin Williamson and directed by suspense master and director of the first trilogy, Wes Craven. The film stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox-Arquette, David Arquette, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Anthony Anderson, Adam Brody, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, Marielle Jaffe, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin, Lucy Hale, Shanae Grimes, Aimee Teegarden and Brittany Robertson.

WHY NOT REVIEW: ‘Scream 4′ The ‘Most Heart-Stopping Sequel In Franchise To Date’!

One of my earliest memories of the Slasher film sub-genre (though not my first, that honor went to Carpenter’s “HALLOWEEN”) was my parents renting a VHS copy of Wes Craven’s (“A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET”, “THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT”) genre riffing, completely self-aware industry oddity, “SCREAM”. I was 8, and from the now classic opening frames of a young Drew Barrymore being chased down and brutally murdered just a few short feet from her unaware parents by the infamous Ghostface (A moment, that admittedly at my young age, scared the living crap out of me), to the unforgettable finale, I knew once and for all that horror would forever be in my blood.

Now this isn’t to say that as I walked into the press-screening I didn’t have my reservations. I, like many, look back at the sequels with the same melancholy feelings and mixed emotions. “SCREAM 2” was a passable effort at making Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott), David Arquette (Deputy Dewey Riley), and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) household names of the genre, while “SCREAM 3” was an almost entirely abysmal attempt to wrap-up what at the time was the most successful slasher trilogy fans had been offered since the Golden Years of old. With those thoughts in mind I watched with hopeful reservations as the opening credits rolled. Read on for the skinny…

Taking an opposing side to Dimension Films’ Scream 4, David Harley was NOT amused with Wes Craven (interview) and Kevin Williamson’s slasher sequel, in theaters tomorrow.

BD Interview: Director Wes Craven on ‘Scream 4′!

The tagline to Scream 4 may be “New Decade, New Rules”, but the “rules” for director Wes Craven have more or less remained the same over the last 40 years – keep making movies. Now 71, the still-youthful director has rarely strayed from the genre he made his name on (Music of the Heart was an anomaly, thank god), and to the delight of Scream fans everywhere he returned to the director’s chair for the highly-anticipated fourth installment, reuniting with original cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox Arquette, and David Arquette to bring to life a new Kevin Williamson-scripted tale of tongue-in-cheek mayhem.

B-D’s Chris Eggertsen recently caught up with Craven to talk to him about the new sequel, with the director giving insight into the process of updating the franchise for a new generation while keeping true to the tone of the first three movies, deciding how much blood was too much, and taking on the much-publicized additional photography that followed an early test screening. See inside for the full interview – and lest you forget, Scream 4 opens everywhere on April 15th.

Ex-Boyfriends and Ghostface in Latest ‘Scream 4′ Clip; Wussy Kids, Mom.

In this fresh clip from Wes Craven’s Scream 4 star Hayden Panettiere chats with Emma Roberts’ annoying ex-boyfriend, who ends up being the notorious Ghostface killer. Unfortunately the clip was recorded off a TV with an Android, but hey, it beats nothing.

In addition, a hilarious article was posted over at The Herald in Australia where mothers at Albert Park primary say their children are spooked by the enormous Scream 4 poster that towers over their school. It features the masked “Ghostface”, an evil knife-wielding killer.

This story is HILARIOUS considering how many kids run around wearing “masks” during Halloween. Do these psycho, overprotective parents lock their kids in the basement on October 31? Cry me a friggin’ river. Full story here.

It’s a Scream 4 extravaganza as we’ve got all sorts of goodies leading you up until next week’s release (April 15).

First, and the most exciting in my opinion, is the brand new cover for Entertainment Weekly, which features good ol’ Ghostface! It’s rare when mainstream media gives horror this much love; only good things can come of it. You can watch a video of the photo shoot from set here.

Included in the article, screenwriter Kevin Williamson opens up about the on set turmoil: “Everyone was second-guessing everything, because everyone wanted it to be so perfect,” Williamson recalls. His arguments with Weinstein intensified over the months and ultimately came to a head. “Oh, I got in a big fight with Bob,” says Williamson. “We got into a massive fight creatively, and we hugged it out and then we moved on.
