David Duchovny Tells Fans To Nag Fox For A Third “The X-Files” Movie

I’m constantly confused by David Duchovny’s obsession with his role on “The X-Files.” Typically, when a series ends, or a franchise falls flat on its face, the actors associated with it want nothing to do with it anymore.

Duchovny, as well as Gillian Anderson, are consistently using interview platforms to beg for another chance to play Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively, once again.

We always want to,” Duchovny told Jay Leno in an interview on Wednesday’s “The Tonight Show,” as reported by THR. “[Creator] Chris Carter and [co-star] Gillian Anderson and I, we’re always on board.

Duchovny, who has previously expressed interest in doing a third film, then encouraged fans to start a letter-writing campaign to the studio to make it happen. “You want to write Fox and get ‘em going…,” he told the audience, adding: “You could wheel me [out]. I’ll play Fox Mulder forever.

His commitment to the franchise, which started way back in 1993, is refreshing. Yet, he’s killing it with Showtime’s “Californication,” and Anderson has no shortage of roles, so their obsession with recurring the roles that made them famous is a head-scratcher. “X-Files” aired on Fox for nine seasons, from 1993-2002, spawning two movies. 1998′s The X-Files: Fight the Future grossed about $189 million at the worldwide box office, but the horrendous 2008 sequel, subtitled I Want to Believe, earned only $68 million, according to Box Office Mojo. I’d love to see X-Files” live on, but only if they can do it right.

David Duchovny, Ed Harris Talk Submarine Horror ‘Phantom’

You’ll never see it coming.

From writer-director Todd Robinson comes the indie Phantom, a submarine thriller we’ve covered out of multiple film markets over the past few years. RCR Distribution will release in theaters March 1, 2013, and we’ve landed the official one-sheet and trailer, as well as a new video interview with star David Duchovny.

Ed Harris plays the captain of a Cold War Soviet missile submarine who has secretly been suffering from seizures that alter his perception of reality. Forced to leave his wife and daughter, he is rushed into a classified mission, where he is haunted by his past and challenged by a rogue KGB group (led by David Duchovny) bent on seizing control of the ship’s nuclear missile. With the fate of humanity in his hands, Harris discovers he has been chosen for this mission in the belief he would fail. David Duchovny Weighs The Possibility Of ‘The X-Files 3′

A few months back TheX-Files writer Frank Spotnitz discussed his strong desire to do a new film in the series saying,”There is a very active and relentless fan campaign for a last movie. I do feel like it would be a terrible shame if that didn’t happen. It feels wrong not to give it an ending around the alien colonisation of earth. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson feel the same.

Now Duchovny’s speaking for himself and he backs this up 100%. He told Collider, “That book doesn’t close until somebody dies, really. One of the greatnesses of the show was its open-endedness. It was about possibility. It wasn’t about closure. It just couldn’t be. There is no such thing as that story ever ending. Those characters are forever searching. That’s what they do. Even if we’re not watching them, they’re out there, in some dimension. Mulder and Scully are still doing their thing ‘cause that’s their nature…I would love to do another film, or more. I think we’re all game for it. I know I’m kind of perplexed that Fox isn’t more [enthusiastic].

I can kind of see where Fox is coming from. 2008′s I Want To Believe only grossed $20M compared to Fight The Future‘s $83M (not adjusted for inflation). But Duchovny has a reasonable answer for I Want To Believe‘s financial failure. Head inside for more. READ MORE

The X-Files: I Want to Believe

The studio is keeping the film’s logline under wraps, but stressed the pic is a stand-alone story and supernatural thriller that takes the complicated relationship between Mulder and Scully in new directions.

When a group of women are abducted in the wintry hills of rural Virginia, the only clues to their disappearance are the grotesque human remains that begin to turn up in snow banks along the highway. With officials desperate for any lead, a disgraced priest’s questionable “visions” send local police on a wild goose chase and straight to a bizarre secret medical experiment that may or may not be connected to the women’s disappearance. It’s a case right out of The X-Files. But the FBI closed down its investigations into the paranormal years ago. And the best team for the job is ex-agents Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully, who have no desire to revisit their dark past. Still, the truth of these horrific crimes is out there somewhere…and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it!
