[Blu-ray Review] ‘Piranha 3DD’ Is Humorless

Let’s face it – you’re not about to watch Piranha 3DD because you think it is going to be a fantastic exercise in thrilling horror. When the slogan of the film includes the line, “Double the D’s” (and they’re not talking about dinosaurs or dwarves), you should know what to expect. And while there are certainly a fair amount of “d’s” in this picture, Piranha 3DD mostly ends up failing in creating both a campy and entertaining experience.

A year after the events in Piranha 3D, a nearby lake becomes the new home to these deadly fish. Maddy (Danielle Panabaker), a marine biology major, comes home for the summer to work at the water park she co-owns with her creepy stepfather Chet (David Koechner). For clever marketing purposes (and an attempt to bring more revenue to the park), Chet has turned this once family friendly water park into a haven for strippers. He also hired David Hasselhoff (as himself) to be a guest lifeguard on opening day (so expect a lot of jokes relating to his career). READ MORE

Anchor Bay Entertainment and Dimension Films announced today the 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD release of the campy comedy-horror film, Piranha 3DD. A sequel to Piranha 3D – the 2010 reboot of the fan-favorite franchise from the ‘70s – Piranha 3DD stars Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies, Friday the 13th), Katrina Bowden (TV’s “30 Rock”), David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Get Smart), David Hasselhoff (TV’s “Baywatch,” “Knight Rider”), Christopher Lloyd (Piranha 3D, Back to the Future), and Gary Busey (Lethal Weapon, The Buddy Holly Story). Directed by John Gulager (Feast) and written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (the writing team behind four Saw and three Feast titles), Piranha 3DD heads to retail on September 4.

Dimension Films has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette from Piranha 3DD, the John Gulager-directed sequel arriving on VOD and in limited theaters June 1. The featurette focuses on David Hasselhoff and goes behind-the-scenes of the shoot.

Dimension Films Piranha 3DD, the sequel to Alex Aja’s remake, is actually shot in 3-D (which is nice). It arrives in limited theaters and on various VOD platforms June 1. We’ve gotten some trailers and clips that give you an indication of the film’s tone – but you might not realize what big of a role “the Hoff” has in this film. It’s not a cameo – it’s a full role. A fact illustrated nicely by the clip from Crave, which catches him in the act the Germans love him for – making music.

Grab a drink and a cheeseburger because David Hasselhoff is heading back to the water in this year’s Piranha 3DD. He joins the previously announced cast which includes Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Gary Busey, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka and David Koechner.

Trading in the sandy beaches of “Baywatch” for terror at The Big Wet Water Park, Hasselhoff will face off with the flesh eating fish of Piranha 3DD on November 23, 2011.
