Dead Space

“Dead Space” is set in the 26th century in deep space, where an engineer who responds to a distress signal from a mining ship finds the vessel infested with monstrous creatures called Necromorphs. The creatures are human corpses, reanimated by an alien virus.

5 Brutal Ways To Die In Horror Games!

A while back Lonnie, Bloody Disgusting’s resident comics guru, listed the 10 most brutal deaths in comics. This got me thinking about the myriad horrible ways I’ve died in video games over the years. Fast forward about a year and I’ve finally got around to listing the most brutal, gory and downright embarrassing ways I’ve died in horror games. There is obviously a very deep well to take from, but I believe I’ve found a pretty solid bunch of traumatizing deaths my increasingly fragile psyche has had to endure over the years.

Check out my picks — including videos, so you can re-live each death with me — after the break, and feel free to offer your own in the comments!

John Carpenter Is Interested In Making A ‘Dead Space’ Film

In a recent interview with Game Informer, horror director John Carpenter (The Thing, Halloween, I’m sure you’re already very familiar with him) revealed that he’d like to bring EA’s action horror franchise Dead Space to the big screen. He spoke specifically about the first game, saying “I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something’s on board. It’s just great stuff.”

“The first game was more – I guess it was like Alien – but not quite. It was a little different than that.” he continued. The original Dead Space was released in 2008 and set on the Necromorph infested USG Ishimura, a spaceship used to crack asteroids and harvest the precious resources within them.

Would You Let John Carpenter Direct A ‘Dead Space’ Movie?

John Carpenter likes a few simple things, two of which are the NBA and video games.

It’s not much of a secret, which is why the publicists and publishers for various games have hired the horror icon to do interviews surrounding their various releases – even when he has absolutely nothing to do with them. Out of said interviews comes all sorts of ridiculous non-news, like this hilarious gem.

Game Informer carried an interview with the director of Halloween, The Fog, In the Mouth of Madness and dozens of other classics, where they baited him into stating he’d love to direct a feature film adaptation of EA’s Dead Space.” READ MORE

This Fan Made ‘Dead Space’ Film Needs More Strategic Dismemberment

This live-action Dead Space film — not to be confused with our short-lived April Fool’s joke — is the work of Youtuber Eric Zaragoza. It’s short, sweet, and slickly produced, especially for a fan film. Zaragoza has also teased his next project, which could be another Dead Space film or something Dark Souls related. Personally, I’d really like to see what he’d do with the latter.

If you have a craving for strategic dismemberment and about four minutes to spare, I suggest grabbing some popcorn and enjoying this awesome short film.

[Indie Horror Spotlight] The Strangest Game I’ve Ever Played

If you’re fond of the unusual, than you’re going to love the cheerfully violent Happy Wheels, because this is the strangest game I’ve ever played. It’s a browser-based pseudo-platformer with a very active community of players who use its level editor to craft custom levels. Some are better than others.

It’s not necessarily a horror game, but I remedied that little issue by playing — mostly dying, actually — on maps inspired by games like Dead Space and Limbo. Won’t you join David and I for some good wacky fun?

6 Downsides To Being A Horror Gamer!

I’ve been a horror fan for most of my life. When my friends were doing whatever it is kids do outside, I was in my room exploring the foggy streets of Silent Hill, or being mercilessly picked on by SHODAN. The atmosphere, monsters, music — I instantly fell in love with it all. Over the years my love for this genre has grown, and so has the list of things I’ve grown to dislike about being a horror gamer.

I’ve compiled a short list of things that have soured my experience as a horror fan over the years, check them out after the break.

6 VERY Disturbing Moments In Video Games!

Video games have introduced us to some extremely memorable scenes over the years. We’ve seen a creature with a giant metal tetrahedron helmet take time away from stalking us so he could rape a mannequin, then it was our turn to be violated by a crazed psychic woman. When video games aren’t treating us like pieces of meat, they’re exploring other paths to cause us even deeper psychological damage. Here are six games that managed just that.

Isaac Clarke Joins The Cast Of ‘PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale’

Everyone’s favorite engineer-turned-Necromorph slaying badass is taking a break from strategically dismembering monsters to make an appearance in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale — ya know, that Sony version of Super Smash Bros. I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but this certainly piques my interest a bit. See him curb-stomp that chick from Heavenly Sword after the jump.

This Freaky Art Is Like Getting A Human Anatomy Lesson From Clive Barker

For the most part, I just sort of glided through my high school career on a current of B’s. There were two classes that caused me quite a bit of trouble though, and they were math (ick) and biology. One day, while I’m daydreaming in the latter, the teacher tells us we’re going to be dissecting fetal pigs. Having been an avid horror movie fan since the ripe age of six, I figured a dead pig wouldn’t be a problem. “What’s that organ?” the teacher would ask me. “Why, that’s very obviously the spleen, as I saw it dug out of that screaming camper in Friday the 13th.” Then the class would cheer my name and I’d be popular forever. Of course, that’s not how it went down. Between the smell that erupted out of that foul creature after it was opened up and my alarming inability to tell one organ from the other, I failed.

What I’m trying to say is if you’re anything like me, then you probably need to brush up on your anatomy skills. Thankfully, artist CheeseLoueez has people like us in mind with his trippy art that covers organs, skeletal structure, and Isaac Clarke. Yeah, he’s there too.

This Is Some Of The Best ‘Dead Space’ Art You’ll Ever See

To celebrate the launch of Dead Space 3 in Europe, EA collaborated with the Dernier Bar Avant la Fin du Monde in Paris to hold an exhibit exclusively showcasing Dead Space fan art. It’s beautiful, and easily some of the best I’ve ever seen. Because it’s Dead Space, you might think it’d be pretty macabre, but that isn’t the case. There’s a little bit of every style. Pop art? Check. Typographic art? Check. Gritty, bloody, and twisted art? Check, check, and check. See for yourself after the jump.

Gears Of War Designer Says “True Horror Games” Will See A Resurgence When Games Go Digital

Cliff Bleszinski, known Resident Evil fan, former creative director at Epic Games, and the man — or one of many — behind the Gears of War franchise took to his personal Tumblr the other day to discuss one of our favorite subjects here at BD: horror games. Or the scary ones, specifically. He had some very interesting things to say about the genre, which has not-so-gracefully transitioned into more action oriented gameplay over the last few years. Since the very beginning of this movement there has been outcry from fans of the slower paced survival horror genre. For awhile, publishers were content with the new direction because it brought them more money than the more niche survival horror genre ever could.

This could soon change. It hasn’t been until fairly recently that major horror franchises have begun to lose their luster with more action-centric entries like Resident Evil 6, Operation Raccoon City, Silent Hill: Homecoming, and Dead Space 3, to name a few, receiving significantly lower review scores than earlier and more horror-driven installments.

[BD Caption Contest] Win All Three Of The ‘Dead Space’ Graphic Novels!

Most of you are already fully aware that the third installment in Visceral Games’ Necromorph-stomping action horror franchise Dead Space released earlier this week, but what you might not know is what released alongside it. That’s Dead Space: Liberation, the third graphic novel based on the games and the second to be illustrated by immensely talented artist Christopher Shy, who I had the opportunity to chat with the other day about his amazing contributions to the franchise.

The lovely folks over at Titan Books have graciously given us three copies of each graphic novel in the series, and that means three of you are going to walk away with the complete trilogy. Find out how you can make this happen after the jump.

6 Unforgettable Jump Scares In Video Games!

Let’s talk about jump scares. Not everyone likes them. In fact, ever since some of our favorite franchises took the inevitable plunge into action horror, jump scares have become the bane of many a horror fan’s existence. Dead Space has been criticized for relying on them too heavily, Doom 3′s abundance of monster closets were a common complaint, and more recently, Capcom tried to toss a few into Resident Evil 6 — Leon’s campaign in particular — in their attempt to make it appeal to horror fans. That obviously didn’t work, but sometimes, a jump scare can be well designed. Like any good scare, timing is important, as is building up to the moment (and I’m not talking about fading the music before a loud noise — I’m looking at you, Hollywood).

You might not be a fan of them, but when they’re well done they can be great. Here are six games that did them particularly well.

Take A Look At The Breathtaking Art That’s Being Shown At The ‘Dead Space’ Art Exhibit In Paris Today

To promote the release of Dead Space 3 in Europe (it launches on Feb 8th), the Dernier Bar Avant la Fin du Monde in Paris has partnered with Electronic Arts and Geek-Art to host an art exhibit that’s all about Dead Space. This is so much more than an advertisement for the game; it’s a celebration of one of the most artistically innovative games of this generation. Whether you love it or not, there’s no denying the impact the series has had, especially when it comes to integrating the interface (health, inventory, etc.) with the world so it’s less intrusive. [Interview] Artist Christopher Shy Discusses ‘Dead Space: Liberation’ And The Evolution Of The Necromorph

Back in 2010, just a month before the release of Dead Space 2, Blackwatch Comics released a graphic novel that bridged the gap between the first and second game — or more specifically, the gap between Dead Space and the animated film Aftermath, which took place before Dead Space 2. It was horrifying, and for me, one of the things that really stuck with me even two years later is the gorgeous illustrations of Christopher Shy. His work took Salvage to a whole new level, and thankfully, he’s returned to lend his talents to Dead Space: Liberation, a second graphic novel that acts as an interquel between the second game and Dead Space 3 (which is out now!). Christopher was kind enough to answer a few of my questions about the new graphic novel (also available now), the art of the Necromorphs, and much more. Read what he had to say after the break!

[Random Cool] Isaac Clarke, Slenderman, And The Master Chief Go 8-Bit

Ever wonder what some of your favorite video game protagonists — or in the case of Slenderman, antagonists — would look like on an NES? Among his gallery of 8-bitified video game characters are Isaac Clarke from Dead Space, Halo’s Master Chief, Street Fighter’s Ryu, a lone zombie, and Slenderman of… well, pretty much every indie horror game coming out in the near future, actually. I have only one complaint about the characters so far, but let’s take a look at them first before I get into that.

6 MORE Horrifying Moments In Video Games!

We gamers put ourselves through a lot, and we do so in the name of fun. We tell ourselves t”his is entertainment,” before we open that creaky door and enter a room to fight a gargantuan living mass of bone and jagged metal with nothing but a pipe and a prayer. I’ve been a gamer for most of my life, and over the years I’ve seen some truly horrifying things. When a stranger asks me about my escape from Raccoon City, my vacation in Silent Hill, or my time aboard the USG Ishimura, I answer them with a thoughtful silence and a thousand yard stare. It’s the only way.

If you’re reading this then you undoubtedly have tales to tell and therapy sessions to endure, so let’s get this started with a look back at six more horrifying moments in video games.

Cosplay can be a wonderful thing. If I were creative enough or had any discernible talent I’d love to be a cosplayer. I’ve seen a fair share of Dead Space cosplay over the years, but none have been as fun to look at as Kevin, who you can see in the supremely badass armor of Isaac Clarke (if we want to get really nerdy I could say he’s wearing the Security Suit from Dead Space 2), and Léa Charvin, who portrays Ellie Langford in many of the shots. Dead Space Composer Jason Graves Announced As Composer For Tomb Raider

BAFTA award-winning composer Jason Graves (Dead Space) has officially been revealed as the composer for the upcoming Tomb Raider video game, which comes out March 5th, 2013. Below you can watch an interview with Jason along with other members of the sound design team as they discuss how sound and music play a role in the game.

Also in the video is a segment dedicated to highlighting a one-of-a-kind sculpture/instrument that was built specifically for Jason for this game (Note: if anyone wants to buy me one of those sculptures, I wouldn’t object). In fact, the music of the first 15 or so minutes of the game is solely performed on this instrument. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that the sculpture looks like something out of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. You can find out a bit more about the sculpture here. READ MORE
