The 8th annual Fantastic Fest’s 8-day reign of chaos in Austin, Texas is underway. The sci/fi, fantasy, martial arts, Asian fantastic, and horror film festival offers up a little something for all genre lovers.

It is my duty to bring you the most horror and/or horror-related film reviews possible. With less than 20 feature films considered to be true horror, I will occasionally spotlight other non-horror films that will, hopefully, appeal to our readers here at Bloody Disgusting.

Be sure to be on the lookout in Austin, Texas from October 25-27, 2013, for my very own Housecore Horror Film Festival. I will be joined by my partner, former Pantera lead singer and heavy metal legend Philip H. Anselmo. We will be bringing 100% horror and heavy metal to the Lone Star state!

[Fantastic Fest '12] First Wave Of Films Announced!!! ‘Dredd 3D’ To Premiere!

I have still never been to Fantastic Fest and every year it gets to be a big reminder that, at some point, I need to get back down to Austin to check it out at some point. We already knew that Frankenweenie would be playing. Now they’ve announced that director Pete Travis’ nuts violent Dredd 3D (written by Alex Garland) will be making its premiere at the fest, which will be held from September 20-27 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the U.S., specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and just plain fantastic movies from all around the world. In years past the festival has been home to world premieres of There Will Be Blood, Apocalypto, Zombieland, The Human Centipede 2 and Red while the guest roster has included such talent as Mel Gibson, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Ryan Reynolds, Karl Urban, Josh Hartnett, The RZA, Dolph Lundgren, Jemaine Clement, Paul Rudd, Bill Pullman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Kevin Smith, Jon Favreau, George Romero, Darren Aronofsky and Mike Judge. Fantastic Fest also features world, national and regional premieres of new, up-and-coming genre films. Fantastic Fest is held each year at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on South Lamar in Austin, Texas.

Walker Pictures and Nishimura Eizo’s Dead Sushi, the latest horror/comedy from acclaimed Japanese director Noboru Iguchi, will World Premiere at Montreal’s prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival on July 22nd, followed shortly thereafter by its Asian Premiere at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan). Iguchi, best-known for his high-octane 2008 action/comedy The Machine Girl, has become an international sensation with jaw-dropping, boundary-pushing films such as RoboGeisha, Karate-Robo Zaborgar, and Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead.

We’ve scored and exclusive new clip from the film called “Flying Squid”, and it’s got a pretty high body count for only being a minute or so long. If you have yet to see a decapitation today, we’ve got you covered.

Dead Sushi, which stars 21-year-old martial arts prodigy Rina Takeda, “tells the tale of Keiko, the daughter of a legendary sushi chef, who runs away from home when his kung fu-like regimen becomes too severe. Finding work at a rural hot springs inn, she is ridiculed by the eccentric staff and guests, including the employees of a pharmaceutical firm there on a work vacation. But little do they know that a disgruntled former researcher has also come to the inn with a plan for revenge, using a serum he developed that can awaken the murderous instincts of ordinary sushi, turning it into bloodthirsty monsters! Keiko must use both her sushi training and her martial arts skills to save the others and defeat the flying killers.”

[Interview] Director Noboru Iguchi Talks ‘Dead Sushi’ And ‘The ABC’s Of Death’

I recently caught up with Iguchi over email and we talked about his inspiration for the film, its “brutal yet delicious” look and his segment in the upcoming ABC’s Of Death anthology.

The film, which stars 21-year-old martial arts prodigy Rina Takeda, “tells the tale of Keiko, the daughter of a legendary sushi chef, who runs away from home when his kung fu-like regimen becomes too severe. Finding work at a rural hot springs inn, she is ridiculed by the eccentric staff and guests, including the employees of a pharmaceutical firm there on a work vacation. But little do they know that a disgruntled former researcher has also come to the inn with a plan for revenge, using a serum he developed that can awaken the murderous instincts of ordinary sushi, turning it into bloodthirsty monsters! Keiko must use both her sushi training and her martial arts skills to save the others and defeat the flying killers.”

Even though we’ve already given you a bloody taste of the movie, we’re excited to bring you the following exclusive still to chew on. The Japanese splatterfest looks straight up whack.

Following the eclectic style of the director’s previous work, Dead Sushi is a tasty mix of action, comedy, and splatter as only Iguchi can do. With special effects by Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and appearances from The Machine Girl and Sukeban Boy’s Kentaro Shimazu, Asami, and Demo Tanaka, this lethal sushi is well worth a nibble!

Film4 FrightFest the 13th is delighted to unveil its most ambitious line-up in history. From the sensational Sinister starring Ethan Hawke, the Sam Raimi produced The Possession and Jennifer Chambers Lynch’s jaw-dropping Chained, to the Maniac remake, the surgical underground of American Mary and the V/H/S anthology everyone is talking about, this year’s event is definitely something to scream about.

From Thursday, August 23 to Monday, August 27 the UK’s leading event for horror fantasy fans will be back at the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square to present 48 films in three screens. Empire 1 will house the main event while the Discovery and the newly-created Re-Discovery strand will play in Empires 4 & 5.
