[Interview] Director Marcel Sarmiento On ‘The ABC’s Of Death’ And His Favorite Onscreen Death Of All Time!!

Magnet officially releases The ABCs of Death on various On Demand platforms (Cable VOD, iTunes, Amazon, Xbox Zune, Playstation Market, VUDU and Google Play) TODAY January 31st with a limited theatrical run set for March 8. The film has 26 directors, so to celebrate 26 different websites are running exclusive interviews with the film’s directors! If you do some poking around (Badass Digest, Slashfilm, HitFix, Latino Review etc…) you can find some of the others. Eventually all 26 interviews will be collected at the The ABCs of Death Tumblr.

I’m particularly excited about my interview. Director Marcel Sarmiento (the underrated Deadgirl) has fashioned one of the true highlights of the film with his segment, “D is for Dogfight.” It’s a truly incredible bit of visual storytelling, a complete narrative contained within a beautifully shot 5 minute sequence without any dialogue.

In this mega-anthology, “Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six ways to die. The ABCs of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world’s leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by children’s educational books, the motion picture is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death.

The ABC’s Of Death is out now! Head inside for the interview! READ MORE

‘Chop’ Director Shares Script For Unproduced ‘Deadgirl’ Sequel!

deadgirl032211 Chop Director Shares Script For Unproduced Deadgirl Sequel!

Those of you who are fans of the indie quasi-zombie flick Deadgirl, and recently checked out the Bloody Disgusting Selects title Chop, are going to love the latest blog post by screenwriter-turned-director Trent Hagga.

By clicking here you’ll be able to download and read the official screenplay for the unproduced sequel to Deadgirl, Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel’s festival favorite about two teenagers who make a shocking discovery (a woman tied to a bed that’s anything but dead) that not only threatens their friendship but also their lives.

What I ended up writing could maybe be described as ‘ ‘Precious’ meets ‘The Pit’ with a zombie attack dog,’ ” teases Haaga. “My idea for the sequel was to try and tell a story from the point of view of a female outcast and what would happen if she found the DEADGIRL this time … instead of using the DEADGIRL for the impetus of her sexual fantasies, what if she used the DEADGIRL for her revenge fantasies instead?

Enough from Mr. Haaga, click the link and read it for yourself! Would you have enjoyed this sequel? READ MORE

‘Deadgirl’ Writer Trent Haaga Responds to Sequel Rumors

Back in 2009 the Trent Haaga penned Deadgirl shocked Toronto International Film Festival audiences with a dark coming-of-age horror story in the vein of River’s Edge. Directed by Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Hare, the plot followed two teenage boys who make a shocking discovery – in a forgotten room of an abandoned asylum, they find a beautiful woman tied to a bed, and soon come to realize she is anything but dead. The film was called misogynistic, although that’s completely ridiculous.

Haaga responded to the accusations by penning a sequel, which made its way back into the news when the Hollywood Reporter wrote an article detailing the plot. The problem is that what they reported is false. Haaga took to his official blog clarifying what we already told you: the plot crunch is 100% incorrect. While Haaga doesn’t go into detail, we can tell you that the plot is said to follow a group of females who find the same “zombie” girl from the first film, not a boy as other sites were reporting.

Anyways, Haaga goes onto explain that if a sequel were to go into production he would not be involved and that he “suspect[s] that some elements that [were] introduced may end up getting stolen…

We’ll update you with any fresh “official” updates.
