Killing time this weekend? Here are fifteen retro reviews for you to check out, slam, or agree with. Some of these films are hidden gems, others are some of the worst I’ve ever seen in my life (ahem, Deadrise). One, in particular, The Antichrist, contains (what I believe to be) the most bizarre scene ever pulled off in horror history. If you’ve seen this Italian version of The Tempter, then you know what I’m talking about. If not, pour some coffee and sit back – perhaps its time to gape open your eyes and see for yourself…
Removal – a psychological knot for you to untie Deadrise – an exercise in sleep denial The Traveler – for horror fans, not Kilmer fans Stanley – he and rattlesnakes hate whitey The Driller Killer – one of the greatest VHS covers ever Carny – Lou Diamond Phillips in a gory SyFy schtick Deranged – the forefather of slasher films Horrors of War – wow, really? Danika – Marissa Tomei insane in the membrane Albino Farm – incentive for film makers that just about anything you shoot can make it to DVD The Swarm – the film that dethroned disaster movie king Irwin Allen The Omen III – Sam Neill as The Antichrist The Maid – a good go at Eastern horror for those who normally don’t delve into such waters Scourge – like farts? You’ll love Scourge The Antichrist (The Tempter) – you haven’t seen them all until you’ve seen this one
In limited theaters July 27 from CJ Entertainment is Deranged, a South Korean genre film that’s a massive success overseas. About a mutant waterborne parasite that takes over Korea, the film passed its 3 million ticket sales mark only 11 days into its release—topping The Amazing Spiderman once more—and continues to maintain the No. 1 spot at the South Korean box office.
The below clip was shared and isn’t impressive, at all. I’m dying to see the movie so I can see why it’s so popular in Korea. We’ve also added the English-subbed trailer inside with theatrical dates.
Directed by Park Jung-woo, “There must be something in the water. Just before dawn, skeletal bodies surface on the Han River in Seoul, Korea. More bodies are discovered all over the nation. The cause of death is determined to be a mutated parasite worm that brainwashes its hosts, ultimately making them jump into bodies of water and to their death within days of infection. As the number of victims rapidly increase, the government sets up an Emergency Response Task Force and puts all infected citizens into quarantine. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical company salesman Jae-hyeok realizes that his family is infected, and becomes desperate to find the cure. In his frantic search to save his family, he uncovers a frightening conspiracy behind the epidemic.”
Ezra’s good at making friends… into home furnishings! Based on the same terrifying story that inspired Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs, this hauntingly scary film chronicles the grisly exploits of a rural necrophiliac and murderer! Brace yourself for a “solid horror story” (Variety) that’s guaranteed to make you bite your nails… because if you don’t, Ezra will!
