[Blu-ray Review] ‘Dexter: The Seventh Season’ Blu-ray at Least Looks and Sounds Great

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

Since the Trinity Killer arc wrapped up in season 4, Dexter has gotten progressively worse. Before the announcement of the 8th being the final season, it seemed like the show’s goal was to just stay on the air as long as possible, rather than tell the best story possible. Aside from the gruesome Doomsday Killer story, which was at least bonkers enough to be slightly entertaining, there hasn’t been that much interesting stuff going on. READ MORE

[TV] Take In “Dexter’s” Hall of Horrors!!!

The Hollywood Reporter has released a new clip from “Dexter,” which displays Hall looking to leave behind a legacy — a “monument” to make his mark — as he questions just what he created. As the camera pans out, Dexter’s potential legacy is revealed: Artistic portraits of his vast and notable victims, including the Trinity Killer, Miguel Prado, Brian Moser, Jordan Chase and countless others.

“Will they call it monstrous or a masterpiece?” he ponders.

“Dexter” stars Michael C. Hall in his Golden Globe and SAG Award-winning role as Dexter Morgan, a complicated and conflicted blood-spatter expert for the Miami police department. Season eight begins six months after LaGuerta’s murder – and Dexter is still managing life as a dad, brother, and serial killer. As Deb (series star Jennifer Carpenter) struggles to deal with the consequences of her actions, a mysterious woman comes to work with Miami Metro, offering first-hand information on Dexter’s past.

“Dexter” returns Sunday, June 30 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.

[TV] New “Dexter” TV Spots, Is Killing In Deb’s Blood?

We have a couple of new TV Spots from Season 8 of Showtime’s “Dexter” and these are actually my favorite yet. Actually the second one is more of the same, with Michael C. Hall lamenting that his mask has been slipping etc… but the first one is an interesting look at Jennifer Carpenter’s nature, Is Deb actually a killer or a victim of circumstance?

[TV] Julian Sands To Probably Be Bad Guy Who Dies In Season 8 Of “Dexter”

Season 8 of Showtime’s “Dexter” (aka The Final Season) has just cast Julian Sands (The Killing Fields, Warlock) as “Miles Foster, a wealthy international businessman“, according to TVLine. Let’s face it, he’ll be playing a bad guy and Dexter will kill him. Not a spoiler, just a guess based on the character description and predictability of the show.

UNLESS, all bets are off. It is the Final Season after all, so maybe they break the mold. Maybe he’s in town to offer Dexter some sort of inheritance.

[TV] Jazzy Video Compilation Of Old “Dexter” Kills

With Season 8 of Showtime’s “Dexter” just around the corner, Showtime has put together a jazzy compilation of the show’s old kills. It’s actually striking to see the Michael C. Hall serial killer back in 2006. Keep in mind, this isn’t every kill, more like a greatest hits.

[TV] UPDATE: New Teaser For Season 8 Shows “Dexter” Back To His Old Ways

Update: We’ve added an even newer teaser that adds a few flickers of new footage to what amounts to a “Dexter” and “Donovan” combo spot. Not a bad way for a network to utilize 45 seconds, but not as interesting as the earlier spot.

We have a new TV Spot from Season 8 of Showtime’s “Dexter,” that shows Michael C. Hall back to his “vetting, stalking, killing” pattern (is it me or does this show need less of that pattern these days) and Jennifer Carpenter feeling more than a little guilty.

[TV] Could “Dexter” Spinoff Into “Deb”?!

Season 8 of Showtime’s “Dexter” will now most certainly be its last. But could characters from the show be spun-off into their own program? Showtime President David Nevins recently spoke to THR about the end of the show and he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a spin-off.

Now, before you cry “SPOILER” please know that this is only a rumor. No one has confirmed that anyone will live or die past the end of this season. The only reason Jennifer Carpenter’s Deb would be rumored for such a show is because… well, you’re not gonna make a show about about Quinn or Batista are you?

THR asked about a Deb-related spinoff, to which Nevins replied, “This is a core franchise to us and all options are on the table as to where it could go after this. There’s nothing actively happening but you never know what the future holds. We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there. I won’t rule it out but I’m not actively planning anything.

[TV] “Dexter” Officially Ending At Season 8! Extended Clip!

We have a new clip from Season 8 of Showtime’s “Dexter,” that confirms two things. 1. This is indeed the final season, as teased by the opening graphic. 2. Deb and Dex aren’t exactly getting along following the death of LaGuerta in the final moments of Season 7.

As for the show ending, PHEW! Maybe now they can go into overdrive and make a really compelling ending, they were all out of “Act 2″ stuff as far as I’m concerned. Here’s hoping they go out with a bang!

[TV] Here’s the First Footage From “Dexter’s” Eighth Season!

While I see heavy negativity surrounding Showtime’s “Dexter,” I still have a lot of fun with the show. While it’s way past the point of quality television, there’s stil an end game at hand, and I’m curious to see how the cabler tackles the new relationship with Dexter and Debra.

With the June 30 premiere of the eighth season locked and loaded, EW scored the first TV Spot jam-packed with action shots from the series, as well as Showtime’s new drama series “Ray Donovan,” which stars Liev Schreiber as a Hollywood fixer. Says the site, there’s only a few brief nuggets, but they’re good ones — we get glimpses of how Dexter and Debra are responding to season 7′s shocking ending (when Deb pulled the trigger on Capt. María LaGüerta). As you might expect, Deb isn’t doing too well — “I shot the wrong person,” she says — while Dex is utterly remorseless.

[TV] Yvonne Strahovski Returning To “Dexter” For Season 8

The 8th Season of “Dexter” will premiere on Sunday, June 30th, and while I await word – final confirmation -double final confirmation that this upcoming season will be its’ last, we do have some news that’s sure to please fans of Yvonne Strahovski. That’s right, she’s reprising her role as serial killer Hannah in the show.

Per EW, “The actress is set to reprise her role in a multi-episode arc this summer as Hannah McKay, the gorgeous killer florist. Last season, the Hannah became Dexter’s twisted love interest and a major thorn in his side. When we last saw her in the seventh season finale, Hannah had escaped from prison, and Dex was seemingly lucky to get away from her.

I think Strahovski is great, but she’s not enough to bring me back. READ MORE

[TV] New “Dexter” Promo Has Me Wondering “Why Bother?”

The 8th Season of “Dexter” will premiere on Sunday, June 30th. Today Showtime issued a new promo entitled “The Full Picture” – and I made it about 5 seconds in. I love Michael C. Hall (and I used to even like this show), but I just can’t do it anymore. The endless pontificating, I just want Dexter to shut up. Let me know when the last 3 episodes are on so I can watch him and Deb go down in flames. At least that would be something different.

The band comments on the song, “Straitjacket Supermodel was inspired by the TV show Dexter. We wrote a song that we envisioned would play in Dexter’s head as he prepares to kill. The song is still ETA, but with a more modern edge. It’s EVE TO ADAM 2.0.

[TV] Les Moonves’ Offhand Comments About “Dexter” Convince Some That Season 8 Is The End

The 8th Season of “Dexter” will premiere on Sunday, June 30th. And while there has always been speculation – even strong wording – that this season will be its last, it’s never been confirmed. Today a few people are taking recent comments by CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves without the grain of salt normally called for in these situations. See, Moonves told some analyst who asked about Showtime’s slate, ““We have Ray Donovan coming on with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with Dexter’s last season starting in June and then we have Masters of Sex.” Nevermind that this is a totally offhand comment made on the fly in the form of one sentence that somehow addresses three shows.

Also nevermind the fact that the plan all along has been to see how Season 8 performs in the ratings first. What’s interesting is that at least one of the sites who picked up this story from The Hollywood Reporter actually included the following sentence in the body of their article, “A spokesperson for the network told The Hollywood Reporter late Monday that there was “nothing confirmed” about if the series could and would continue beyond season eight.

I only point this out to clarify to you guys – nothing actually seems to be decided yet. Any articles you’re reading that have something to the effect of “Showtime Confirms Season 8 As The Last” as the headline actually include an official statement made after that which negates the whole point of the article.

[News Bites] Insurge Stalks ‘Equinox’; “Under the Dome” Casting; “Dexter” Gains A Hitman; ‘Jurassic Park 3D’ Poster

It’s been another massive news day, so here’s a few evening briefs to send you off until tomorrow. It begins with THR reporting that Paramount’s low-budget genre Insurge label is going sci-fi with Equinox, which is being written by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes. Project details are being kept secret but it is being described as “Dead Calm in space,” according to sources. Calm, released in 1989, was an enclosed thriller set on a boat which pitted a married couple against a murderer. Mason and Boyes are Brits who previously wrote NSFW, and collaborated on The Devil’s Chair and other random indie thrillers that Mason directed.

The site also reports that Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Cloverfield alum Mike Vogel, pictured above, has been tapped to join the cast of the network’s sci-fi drama “Under the Dome.” Based on the book by Stephen King, the summer series “Follows residents in the community of Chester’s Mill as they deal with the postapocalyptic conditions that ensue when a strange dome mysteriously encapsulates the town.” Vogel will play Barbie, an Army veteran who is in Chester’s Mill on a mysterious mission during which he might have killed a man. He’s not a bad guy but, at the same time, not someone to be messed with. He’s as baffled by the dome as everyone and befriended by an investigative journalist named Julia, though his shadowy past will complicate his relationship with the married woman. Director Niels Arden Oplev (Sweden’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) will direct the first episode.

TVLine managed to get a few details about Nick Gomez‘s (“The Walking Dead”) upcoming guest spot on “Dexter.” The site reports that Gomez will play hit man Javier Guzman on the Showtime drama. The character — who goes by the nickname El Sapo — will find himself frustrated when Debra gets in between him and his target, which probably isn’t great news for Dexter’s sis.

Lastly, Cine1 has a really crappy new poster for Jurassic Park 3D, the 3D re-release of the 1993 Steven Spielberg classic making its IMAX 3D debut on April 9th. The CG work looks better than anything in “Aliens: Colonial Marines,” at least… READ MORE

[TV] “Dexter” Nanny Becomes Season Regular

Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is apparently going to need a full-time nanny when season eight of Showtime’s “Dexter” returns.

Says The Hollywood Reporter, actress Aimee Garcia, who has been recurring as graduate student Jamie, has been promoted to series regular.

Garcia has been recurring on the Showtime serial killer drama, where she cares for Harrison while his father juggles his Dark Passenger and job as a blood-splatter analyst at Miami Metro. She’s the sister to Dexter’s colleague, Angel (David Zayas).

In the season seven finale, Angel was on the brink of retiring from his detective position in favor of a simpler life running a restaurant. With the death of his recent ex-wife Maria LaGuerta (Lauren Velez), it’s unclear just how that will impact his law enforcement career (or emotional balance for the sensitive cop).

[TV] “Walking Dead” Star Shoots Into “Dexter’s” Life

“The Walking Dead” star Nick Gomez, pictured, announced via Twitter that he has signed on for a role in the forthcoming final(?) season of Showtime’s “Dexter.” No word on who he’ll be playing.

Yesterday, Sean Patrick Flanery had been tapped for a major recurring role on the upcoming eighth season of Showtime’s hit serial killer drama, as did veteran British actress Charlotte Rampling.

Flanery will play Jacob Elroy, the ex-cop owner of a private investigation company in Miami. Rampling will play a neuro-psychiatrist who specializes in working with young psychopaths and profiling criminals in unorthodox ways. Her role has a significant impact on next season’s story.

“Dexter” has had such huge success, it could find another season past this summer’s finale.

[TV] Two Major Roles Filled For Potential “Dexter” Series Finale

Saw 3D and Boondock Saints star Sean Patrick Flanery, pictured above right, has been tapped for a major recurring role on the upcoming eighth season of Showtime’s hit serial killer drama “Dexter,” reports Deadline, while EW adds that veteran British actress Charlotte Rampling (The Avengers,” Stardust Memories, The Verdict, The Duchess) has also landed a key role.

Flanery will play Jacob Elroy, the ex-cop owner of a private investigation company in Miami. Rampling will play a neuro-psychiatrist who specializes in working with young psychopaths and profiling criminals in unorthodox ways. Her role has a significant impact on next season’s story.

Earlier this month, Showtime’s entertainment president David Nevins would not say whether “Dexter”‘s upcoming eighth season would be its last as had been widely expected before the veteran found creative rejuvenation and hit ratings highs in Season 7. “I think I will clarify before “Dexter” goes on the air for this next season (in June),” Nevins said. “There’s a clear end game in place.” It is unclear whether the Elroy character would be part of that end game.

[TV] Slow Down Buddy! There’s A “Dexter” Season 8 Promo Already?

The 8th Season of “Dexter” will premiere on Sunday, June 30th. That’s a full three months earlier than last year’s premiere (Season 7 premiered at the end of September) and now we’ve got a teaser that touts your abbreviated wait time. I should note that there is absolutely no new footage in this teaser and for 1 second it makes you think that Liev Schreiber has joined the program.

Just a reminder that I’m starting to personally doubt this will be the last season. The show is still performing well in the ratings and even Showtime President David Nevins is hedging his bets by saying stuff like, “[Season 8] is the likely endpoint, but I’m leaving open the possibility that plans could change [...] I think there’s a very clear trajectory now of where they’re going. I think it’s going to help to write with that endgame in mind. I’ve been pushing to shake up the formula a little bit. I think there should be fundamentally different dynamics now.” and “ “Dexter” for Showtime is what Batman is to Warner Bros., it is a cornerstone franchise.
