A genre-bending vampire film. The humor-laced romancer “Hello Darkness” turns on an ordinary man who becomes a vampire and falls for a posh student. (full synopsis)
The script chronicles the epic origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler. It depicts Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war, repositioning him more as a vengeful hero than the monster seen in Bram Stoker’s classic novel.
Universal’s Dracula (formerly Year Zero), has added Dominic Cooper to the cast (pictured above; Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dead Man Down), Variety reports. It’s not yet known what role he’ll be playing.
Pic stars Fast & Furious 6‘s Luke Evans and Sarah Gadon. Gary Shore is directing and Michael De Luca producing.
“The story is a mix of mythology and history as it follows the story of Prince Vlad, the inspiration for the Dracula character popularized by the Bram Stoker novel.”
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the latest draft of the script. VP of production Anikah McLaren and creative executive Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for Universal.
The film is moving fast with Universal giving it the greenlight and slating it for an Aug. 8, 2014 release.
Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D ended the weekend with an estimated $16.5 Million. While that’s not an unmitigated bomb, it’s certainly not a success given its reported production budget of $69 Million (tack at least another 30-40 on for P&A and I think a conservative number for the cost of the film still exceeds $100 Million). I guess there’s still a remote chance this movie makes its money back theatrically, but the C+ Cinemascore (indicating audiences didn’t really like the movie) means it will likely have a precipitous drop-off next weekend. As far as foreign numbers go I wouldn’t expect ALVH to expand much beyond its current take of $7.8 Million. Abe Lincoln is our historical figure, not so much the world’s.
Now, I didn’t outright hate the movie. I actually really enjoyed the first 30-40 minutes or so, but then the script lost me. There are some good performances and some cool set pieces, but there still needs to be some sort of narrative thrust if I’m going to be down with watching a guy in a top-hat kill vampires for two hours. The CG was fairly terrible and I found the film’s image itself unpleasant, too bright and contrasty. Whatever, it’s just another so-so movie, right?
But here’s the thing. I read a report this morning that claimed that the failure of ALVH to catch on could be a bad thing for “original” and “risky” films. That its the audiences’ way of telling studios that they want more remakes and sequels. This is 100% incorrect. And while I normally wouldn’t give much thought to this kind of reporting (or that kind of reporter), I know that this is the sort of thinking that many studio execs can latch onto.
In anything, the failure of ALVH is the failure of a pre-fabricated brand. It’s produced by Tim Burton. Timur Bekmambetov’s last movie, Wanted, did great business. It’s based on a popular book. It’s got vampires. It also has a recognizable brand name – our 16th president and civil rights hero Abraham Lincoln. Where’s the “risk” in this? How is this an audience rejecting an “original” movie? Even though ALVH isn’t a sequel, the reason it exists springs from the same mentality. That’s what mashups are – they are literally mathematical equations. The desire to combine a known entity with an X-factor in order to create a “new” marketable entity is a mutation of the sequelitis gene, not a break from it. Call it the KE+X=$$$ theorem if you want. Except, financially, it just didn’t work out this time.

Twentieth Century Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the Timur Bekmambetov-directed historical retelling of our 16th President that was penned by up-and-coming genre madman Seth Grahame-Smith, is finally heading into the top gears of its pre release publicity cycle. A red band trailer was issued to IGN today that kicks up the mayhem – and gore – several notches. It’s still pretty heavy on the CG – and I still hate the look of CG blood – but if you can get past that this may be a fun ride. We’ll see.

This one continues the ass-kicking, more serious than you’d expect, epic vibe of the first trailer while expanding the scope significantly. My only complaint? Not nearly enough Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Twentieth Century Fox has released a slew of new imagery from Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D, his 3-D historical retelling arriving in theaters June 22. In this historical fantasy, produced by Tim Burton, vampires strike the same twitchy nerve among the citizenry that terrorists do in our real world. One of the images features Benjamin Walker as “Honest Abe” wielding an axe and taking full-swing (hopefully about to take a vamp’s head off!) The other displays Lincoln in his younger days, already aware of the vampire menace, but just beginning to learn that he and his trusty felling axe could do something about it.
Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Rufus Sewell, Robin McLeavy, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jimmi Simpson, and Alan Tudyk also star.

Props to our good friends at Latino Review, who received a lot of sh*t when their breaking story was debunked. Only thing is, they were 50% right. The site had reported that Robin McLeavy (the psycho-chick in the Aussie horror The Loved Ones) would be starring as Mary Todd, Abe Lincoln’s love interest and eventual wife in Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D for Twentieth Century Fox.
McLeavy is now confirmed for a role, only she’ll be playing the role of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, “Nancy Hanks Lincoln.”
Spoiler Warning: The role is brief but sets the tone for the action, reports Deadline. It’s her death at the hands of a bloodsucker that hardens young Abe Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) into going to war against the growing scourge of vampires in the 1800s.
Fox will release in theaters on June 22, 2012.
