Now They’re Calling It ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’! Guess Who’s Directing?

Guillermo 51012 Now Theyre Calling It Guillermo Del Toros Pinocchio! Guess Whos Directing?

Guillermo Del Toro might be the busiest man alive. But he isn’t going to let that distinction keep him from making his foray into stop motion animation with that is now called Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio for the Jim Henson Company. Actually he’ll be co-directing it with with Mark Gustafson, who was the animation director on Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Per Variety, “Guillermo Del Toro will co-direct ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’… he plans to begin shooting in the summer of 2013. It’s the first time he’s directed an animated feature. Story will be set in Italy between WWI and WWII. ‘It was when everyone was behaving like a puppet, except for puppets,’ Del Toro said. Del Toro said no casting decisions have been made but noted he’s considered Tom Waits for the role of Pinocchio’s father and Donald Sutherland for the role of the fox.

Del Toro disclosed in 2008 that he had began working on a “Pinnochio” project with Henson and artist Gris Grimly, who illustrated a 2002 version of “Pinocchio.” At that point, Grimly and Adam Parrish King were attached to co-direct; last year, Del Toro and Henson Co. announced that Grimly would co-direct with Gustafson.

This is just speculation on my part, but this could actually work out with Del Toro’s schedule just fine. While he’s deep in post on Pacific Rim and has a gajillion other projects lined up, he doesn’t necessarily need to be onset the entire time for Pinocchio (similarly, Wes Anderson was able to direct much of Fox remotely). Stop-motion movies are so painstakingly detailed and take so long to film (up to a year), so much of the process is actually just photographing the movements of the characters. While directing the film will no doubt require a lot of effort on Del Toro’s behalf, it might be something he can multi-task.

Inferno Entertainment will represent the property to international buyers at Cannes Film Festival.

Lionsgate officially announced today that Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) has officially signed on to direct Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games, based on the second in a series of books by Suzanne Collins that has 36 million copies in circulation in the US alone.

It is truly an honor and a privilege to bring “Catching Fire,” the second chapter of Suzanne’s beloved trilogy, to the big screen,” Said Francis. “I fell in love with the characters, the themes and the world she created and this chapter opens all of these elements up in such a thrilling, emotional and surprising way. I can’t wait to dive right into it and bring this chapter to life along with the truly superb cast and filmmakers involved.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth will reprise their roles as Katniss, Peeta and Gale, with Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, and Woody Harrelson also returning to their respective roles.

First Full Trailer For ‘The Hunger Games’

First Full Trailer For The Hunger Games

Airing this Sunday during the Super Bowl is Lionsgate’s first full trailer for The Hunger Games, originally described as Battle Royale meets Running Man. You’ll find the footage below that shares only a few more seconds of fresh footage, which is odd considering they’ve completed filming since the initial tease struck last year.

In theaters March 23, the pic is set in post-apocalyptic America that introduces 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who must participate in a fight-to-the-death annual event called the Hunger Games. The battles are televised, and pit youths from each of the Capitol’s 12 Districts against each other.

Jennifer Lawrence Receives an Escort to ‘The Hunger Games’

Jennifer Lawrence Receives an Escort to The Hunger Games

While some of the early looks made me slightly uncomfortable (it still bothers me that the elite people dress like clowns), below you’ll find a cool new image from The Hunger Games that feels a bit inspired by A Clockwork Orange. It depicts Jennifer Lawrence being escorted to training. Directed by Gary Ross, the entire trailer (also inside) looks like a mish-mash of other people’s concepts and ideas. I’m not sure how much of that comes out of the book…

Originally described as Running Man meets Battle Royale, the movie also mixes in heavy tones from Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short “The Lottery”.

Elizabeth Banks Plays an Elite Clown in ‘Hunger Games’

bankshunger111611 Elizabeth Banks Plays an Elite Clown in Hunger Games

Do you think when Elizabeth Banks signed up for The Hunger Games she knew she’d be unrecognizable? After watched the quasi-impressive trailer premiere the other day, I literally had no idea Banks played a clown (named “Effie Trinket”) with a microphone. Truth be told, the costume and make-up design of the “elite” class in this dystopian tale is exactly what’s wrong with it. As I sniped the other day, it looks like director Gary Ross is pushing into Joel Schumacher Batman territory. I’m highly concerned.

Lionsgate’s Dystopian ‘The Hunger Games’ Inspired by Terrifying Short ‘The Lottery’

Lionsgates Dystopian The Hunger Games Inspired by Terrifying Short The Lottery

I’ve never read the books, but I do recall the initial pitch when Lionsgate acquired the rights some time ago. It was The Running Man meets Battle Royale. They’ve since abandoned the comparison, but the newly released trailer does everything but ignore that it’s a complete riff of the aforementioned films.

Lionsgate has finally unveiled the first full trailer for The Hunger Games, which is solely footage from the first half of the adaptation. It displays Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in a Dystopian future chosen for a yearly battle to the death. Only one can survive. The selection process is right out of Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short “The Lottery”, while the games themselves look like a reboot of Battle Royale. My main complaint, other than the Braveheart-esque score, is Director Gary Ross’ vision of the future. If there were a fine line to cross, he’s pushing into Joel Schumacher Batman territory.

Donald Sutherland Elected ‘Hunger Games’ President

More from the world of big studio franchises, Donald Sutherland has been cast as President Snow in the highly anticipated adaptation of the Suzanne Collin’s bestseller, The Hunger Games.

President Snow has been the autocratic ruler of Panem and its contained districts for some 25 years at the outset of the story. With a snake-like appearance, he is cruel and ruthless in his intimidation and control tactics.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg, Chris Mark, Jacqueline Emerson, Wes Bentley, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones and Stanley Tucci also star.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross, will arrive on theaters March 23, 2012.
