Luke Evans Gives Us A Status Update On ‘The Crow’!

I just got off the phone with Luke Evans (pictured above; The Raven), whose insanely bloody Ryhuhei Kitamura directed slasher No One Lives hits May 10th from Anchor Bay.

While I’ll be posting the entirety of the interview tomorrow, I wanted to share a quick aside regarding the Relativity and the Weinstein Company reboot of The Crow that Evans is currently in talks for. In the original film, a man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.

We also briefly touch on the upcoming Dracula reboot, but that’s only in the context of him wanting to step away from horror for a bit. “…I don’t think I need to do another horror movie for a while [laughs].READ MORE

‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate’ Review: A Slaying Spree Without Substance

MercurySteam’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, released in 2010, played like no Castlevania game that came before it, yet it still felt like it took place in the same universe. The series’ flagship European castles, dark and moody forests, and supernatural creatures worked better than expected when mixed with God of War-esque combo-driven combat, larger-than-life set pieces, and light RPG elements, a noticeable departure from its NES and SNES ancestors and Metroidvania counterparts.

[TV] Janet Montgomery Cast As The Lead In ABC’s “Gothica”, I Learn That ABC’s “Gothica” Exists

Deadline is reporting that ABC’s gothic soap “Gothica” has finally cast its lead. Janet Montgomery (pictured above; The Hills Run Red, Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead) will be playing Grace Van Helsing in this INSANE sounding series. To be fair, she survived a Declan O’Brien movie, so she can probably survive anything (I kid, I kid). But seriously, did you know there was a show “set in the present day, which weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.

It gets better, “In this incarnation of the story Frankenstein runs a hospital that also does biotech research and believes that he may have a way to bring his recently deceased daughter back to life. Gray is a wealthy playboy.

Anyway, she joins the previously cast Chris Egan (Resident Evil: Extinction), who will be playing Dorian Grey, as well as Tom Ellis who is playing Victor Frankenstein.

The show “centers on Grace Van Helsing (Montgomery), a Pulitzer prize winning journalist from New York who takes over her family’s hometown newspaper. Dorian Gray (Chris Egan) provides her with the $20 million she needs to retain control of the paper, and she was romantically involved with Victor Frankenstein (To Ellis) years ago. ” ABC Studios and the Mark Gordon Co. are producing the pilot written by Matt Lopez.

Happy 81st Birthday To Composer John Williams

Today marks the 81st birthday of composer John Williams. This is the man who brought us one of the most infamous horror scores when he composed Jaws in 1975. Since that day, people are still afraid to get in the water (myself included). He also composed the 1979 Dracula, which starred Frank Langella as Dracula, Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing and Halloween‘s Donald Pleasence as Dr. Jack Seward. There was also his work on Brian De Palma’s The Fury (1978), which featured Kirk Douglas and John Cassavetes (Rosemary’s Baby).

But it’s not only for these films that Williams is so well known and accomplished. He is also responsible for fantastic scores to such films as the Indiana Jones series, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Schindler’s List, Star Wars, and more.

And so with fond memories for the music of each of these films, I wish John Williams a very happy birthday and thank him for all he has brought us! READ MORE

Daniella Pineda, pictured, has landed a regular role in the potential “Vampire Diaries” spinoff “The Originals,” which will be introduced as an upcoming episode of TVD that airs April 25, reports Deadline. “The Originals” stars “TVD’s” Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies and Phoebe Tonkin reprising their roles. Written by “TVD” co-creator/executive producer Julie Plec, the show “Centers on the Original family of vampires, as Klaus (Morgan) returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans — a town he helped build centuries ago — and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel. Elijah (Gillies), intent on helping his self-destructive brother find redemption, must side with Marcel’s enemies in order to keep Klaus in line.” Pineda will play Sophie, a witch whose magic has been silenced but not snuffed. A leader and a sexy, sharp-tongued social force, she is quietly sowing the seeds of a revolution amongst her peers.

Irish actress Victoria Smurfit has been tapped to play Lady Jayne in the NC’s 10-episode “Dracula,” The Hollywood Reporter reports. “The series takes place in the 1890s and finds Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) living a double life in London as an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian society. But his true plan — to exact revenge on those who burdened him centuries ago — is derailed when he falls in love with Mina (Arrow’s Jessica DeGouw), who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.” Smurfit will play Lady Jayne, a fashion-forward graceful and beautiful woman instantly attracted to Dracula who pursues him.

All hands on deck for the new promo poster for CW’s “Cult,” which promises that seeing is deceiving. ““Cult” follows Jeff (Matt Davis), who’s a journalist blogger (all of us professional bloggers are extremely handsome and heroic, don’t you know, and it’s about time broadcast TV recognized it). He teams with Skye (Jessica Lucas), a production assistant on a popular television crime series called Cult, as they investigate the fans of the series who are re-creating the crimes on the show.” Added meta twist: The fictional version of Cult airs on a fictional version of The CW within the show. “Cult” premieres Tuesday, February 19. [Editorial] The Wolfman Takes On Remakes!!

By The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards).

You’re sitting there in the movie theater with your Junior Mints, or in the case of psychopaths, sitting there with Dots, waiting for the movie to start. You have a terrifying debate with yourself for ten seconds while you try to determine whether the lights in the theater are actually dimming or maybe you’re having a stroke. Once that bright green screen pops up, proving that your brain does indeed have enough oxygen, you catch a glimpse of some of Hollywood’s newest garbage. Between romantic comedies and animated adventures starring pop singers, it all looks like the same old stuff. Unexpectedly, a trailer pops up that seems to be pretty creepy, have some decent actors in it, and the credits tell you it’s from people who helped make other horror movies that you absolutely love. When the title is revealed, the entire audience groans, followed by nudging the person next to you and saying, “Can you believe they’re even making that movie?” Or maybe you went to this movie alone and angrily took out your phone to post your disdain on Twitter for everyone (read: not really anyone) to see. No folks, the title didn’t reveal that the trailer you just enjoyed was an M. Night Shyamalan joint, but instead, the movie is a remake, adaptation of, or sequel to something else. No matter what the source material is, nothing seems to cause fanboys to angrily roll their eyes more then finding out their favorite movie/book is getting a remake/adaptation/sequel. My advice to all of you is to quit your complaining about something you had absolutely no involvement in making and should focus your energy on revisiting the source material.

Nosferatu_Banner_12_27_12

[This Day In Horror] F.W. Murnau, Director Of ‘Nosferatu’, Is Born!

December 28th, 1888.

On this day, 124 years ago, F.W. Murnau was born in Bielefeld, Germany. If you’re not entirely familiar with his name, he directed Nosferatu, an iconic (and unauthorized) adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. He would later to go on to direct films for Fox after moving to Hollywood, though none of those resonate as much in today’s culture.

Of course, Nosferatu would be a tough act to follow for anyone. Changing the names (and a few plot points) from “Dracula”, it introduced us to Max Schreck’s indelible performance as Count Orlok, aka Nosferatu. The film was of course silent, so the onus was on Murnau and Schreck to create a villain that would not only be visually striking, but sympathetic as well. Of course, they succeeded. Nosferatu is one of the most famous vampire designs ever and, for my money, it’s a much more interesting take on the creature than what would become the standard modus operandi of just slapping some fangs on an actor and powdering down his face with foundation. It’s also worth noting that Nosferatu depicted sunlight as being lethal to vampires, while in the book “Dracula” the sun merely weakens them. I’m not entirely sure if this is the first instance of that revisionist biology or if Murnau lifted it from elsewhere, but it’s regarded as the first time this type of demise was depicted on film. Needless to say this helped cement the role sunlight would play in subsequent vampire lore.

In 1979 Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) directed a remake of the film called Nosferatu The Vampire that used the character names from “Dracula” but adhered more closely to Murnau’s plot beats and creature design. In 2000 Shadow Of The Vampire depicted a heavily fictionalized (ie Schreck is actually a vampire) account of Nosferatu‘s filming with John Malkovich playing Murnau and Willem Dafoe portraying Schreck. It’s kind of like The Girl but willfully dumb instead of unintentionally so.

Murnau was mortally wounded in a car accident on the PCH in 1931. He is pictured inside. READ MORE

[Blu-ray Review] Relive Horror History With ‘Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection’

After the success of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame in 1923, Universal began its now eighty-plus year horror fixation with The Phantom Of The Opera. Under the watch of Carl Laemlle Jr.’s, Universal produced Tod Browning’s Dracula and James Whale’s Frankenstein, both of which are among the most influential and recognizable horror films ever made – the Spanish version of Dracula, shot at night on the same sets the English-language version used, is considered to be superior and equally important by many. From the 30’s until the late 50’s, Universal produced the bulk of their “classic” monster films, including The Mummy (a property the studio has bastardized far past the point of return), The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, and – a personal favorite of mine – Creature From The Black Lagoon. With make-up pioneers like Jack Pierce, incredible directors like James Whale, and horror personas like Lon Chaney Jr., Boris Karloff, and Bela Lugosi (and to a lesser extent, the “cross-over” film), Universal forever changed the horror landscape.
