TV: NBC Orders “Dracula” Series, Already Announces New Count!

First “Hannibal” and now “Dracula”.

NBC has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to “Dracula,” with “The Tudors” star Jonathan Rhys Meyers (pictured) set to play the iconic vampire, says DL.

Based on an idea by Krantz, “Dracula” is set in the 1890s and has been described as “Dangerous Liaisons” meets “The Tudors”.

In the NBC/Sky Living series, “Dracula (Meyers) arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier but falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.READ MORE

Eli Roth In Talks To Direct Dracula’s Revival In ‘Harker’

Eli Roth (pictured below; Hostel, Cabin Fever) is in talks to go back behind the camera for a Warner Bros project in development to star Russell Crowe (above), says Deadline.

In Harker, Lee Shipman & Brian McGreevy’s reimagining of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, Crowe is attached to play Dracula who is tracked by Jonathan Harker, a Scotland Yard detective.

Crowe is only on board for the first film, but the script sets up the sleuth as a potential new franchise character. Harker is as yet uncast. Jaume Collet-Serra (Whiteout, Orphan, House of Wax) was originally attached to direct.

Harker will be produced by Appian Way (which produced Collet-Serra’s last directorial outing Orphan with Joel Silver’s Dark Castle) and its partners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Making this even cozier, Shipman and McGreevy wrote and are executive producing the Netflix TV project “Hemlock Grove” which Eli Roth is directing and exec-producing. READ MORE

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! There are 61 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into. Van Helsing

Orci and Kurtzman To Approach ‘Van Helsing’ Remake Like ‘The Dark Knight’

Producers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman recently spoke to Crave about the forthcoming Van Helsing, which is (no shock) a reboot.

Well, I don’t want to give away too much, because we are actually at the very beginning of talking about what to do with it. But I do feel like the Van Helsing that Anthony Hopkins plays in [Bram Stoker’s] Dracula is sort of the parody version of it, and the Van Helsing that Hugh Jackman played was obviously in a different place as well,” they explain. “I think that these kinds of movies have evolved a lot since then. You know, The Dark Knight was a major, major corner-turning moment in the way that genre and superhero stories could be told. Really grounded in reality. Really grounded in really cool things. That’s what I’d like to do without sacrificing the fantasy element. We aspired to do that as well on Trek, you know, keep it “real.” That’s such a different franchise than Batman, but that’s really what we wanted to do. And we’d love to do that with Van Helsing.

The duo aren’t saying that the original was a parody, but they’re correct in stating that it feels like it. The hammy nature of Universal’s 2004 film, directed by Stephen Somers, is as cheeseball filled as they come. Approaching the franchise from a real place begins with the script and ends with the effects work. Hopefully they can work together and deliver a epic creature feature that we deserve?

Incredibly Rare Dracula Poster Discovered, Sold For $143,400

Who doesn’t love to read about insane collectibles that none of us could ever possibly own?

The Hollywood Reporter writes about a trove of rare movie posters from the early ’30s discovered in Berwick Pennsylvania that fetched a disgusting $503,000 at an auction conducted by Heritage Auctions.

While most of them aren’t relevant here, the most coveted item in the collection was a rare 1931 one-sheet from Universal Pictures’ Tod Browning-directed Dracula, just one of four known copies in existence, which fetched $143,400, slightly below its initial estimate of $200,000.

The gorgeous painted poster features Béla Lugosi as Dracula and the tagline “The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known!”

Sony Puts Down Stakes On New ‘Dracula’ Franchise!

DraculaSony22712 Sony Puts Down Stakes On New Dracula Franchise!

Sheesh. There are so many Dracula projects in development, I don’t even know what to call this project. Sony hasn’t given a title yet, so right now I’ll call it Dracula or Untitled Dracula Origin Story. This is not to be confused with Universal’s Dracula Year Zero or Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D. It’s also completely different from the Guillermo Del Toro/Chuck Hogan contemporary telling of the story

The Sony version is based off a sought-after pitch by Jason Keller and is intended to be a period-piece franchise starter produced by Joe Roth and Palak Patel.

Per Deadline, “Sony Pictures has acquired a pitch from scribe Jason Keller for a period origin story on the Dracula mythology that will be produced by Joe Roth and Palak Patel. I’m hearing the deal was high six figures against seven-figures. It becomes the latest in a growing list of films about the iconic vampire borne out of the legend of Vlad the Impaler. Insiders at Sony would only say the intention is to launch a period franchise… Keller most recently scripted Relativity Media’s ‘Mirror Mirror’

Let’s hope this project is nothing like Mirror, Mirror. READ MORE

TV: NBC Goes Young and Sexy With ‘Dracula’. That’s Lame.

NBC is giving the classic vampire tale of Count Dracula a contemporary spin, reports Deadline. The site reports that the network has teamed with producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender and writer Cole Haddon for a “Dracula” series eyed for both the U.S. and international marketplace.

The project, developed for NBC and NBCU’s international channels, has a “script-to-series” commitment, meaning that it won’t go through a pilot stage but straight to series if NBC brass like the script, which is currently being written by Haddon.

“Dracula,” produced by Krantz’s Flame Vantures, Callender’s Playground Entertainment, Universal TV and NBCU International Prods., is based on an idea by Krantz. “Set in the 1890s, it is described as “Dangerous Liaisons meets The Tudors” and as a big, sweeping international soap opera that is young, sexy and supernatural.

BARF.

In the deal for Dracula, NBC employed the same model it is using for another drama project about an iconic villain, “Hannibal.” That project, written by Bryan Fuller and produced by Gaumont International Television, also has a commitment for a script against 13-episode order. Both shows have pre-sold titles, along with Fuller’s “Munsters” reboot, which was recently picked up to pilot by NBC. READ MORE

Asia Shows Fangs In New ‘Dracula 3D’ Photos

I wonder if Dario knows what Twitter is, or that he has no reason to hire a PR agency to promote Dracula 3D because his daughter, Asia, is doing a great job distributing production stills online all by herself. The latest slew of photos shows her character, Lucy, after her transformation and Alan Jones hanging out on the set. My question is when are we going to see Rutger Hauer running around with stakes?

Argento’s stereoscopic retelling of Dracula has no release date as of yet, but one would assume late 2011 or early 2012.

Asia Argento Snaps ‘Dracula 3D’ Set Photos

I have to admit that I really wasn’t excited for Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D until I heard that Rutger Hauer was cast as Van Helsing. He’s an extremely intense actor when he wants to be, and I can’t wait to watch him chew the scenery as the famous vampire slayer.

Today, Asia Argento – who plays Lucy – posted a few behind-the-scenes photos from the set, including shots of Mina (Marta Gastini), her dad, and a building which I assume is either Carfax Abbey or Castle Dracula.

IDW Announces Massive Vampire Anthology – ‘In The Shadow Of Dracula’!

IDW Announces Massive Vampire Anthology In The Shadow Of Dracula!

G. Loring, Marry E. Wilkins-Freeman, M. R. James, F. Marion Crawford, Algernon Blackwood, E. F. Benson, Bram Stoker, Alice and Claude Askew
ILLUSTRATIONS BY: Michael Manomivibul

“As popular and influential as Bram Stoker’s classic tale of nocturnal menace is, that 1897 novel did not invent vampire fiction, nor was it alone in feeding the Gothic fantasies of the Victorian period. IDW Publishing presents an expertly selected menu of outstanding vampire prose stories that either informed or benefited from Bram Stoker’s hugely popular creation. These eerie tales of the undead — some 22 in all — form the core cannon of classic vampire literature. Chosen and introduced by celebrated literary scholar and author Leslie S. Klinger, with illustrations by horror artist Michael Monomivibul, In the Shadow of Dracula brings to adventuresome readers stories of nocturnal terror that have lived in Stoker’s shadow for too long.”

Non-News Of The Day: ‘Vlad’ Director Excited About His Own Film

All has been quiet on Summit’s Vlad – which was in development before the studio’s public announcement in late 2009 – until today, when MTV published information from an interview they conducted with director Anthony Mandler last week.

Recently signing onto Die In A Gunfight, the music video helmer said that he is “deep into ‘Vlad,’ the origin story of Dracula… I think kind of shortly things are going to start unfolding.” He also added that he “[has] a rewrite that the story loves (?) and we’re optimistic as to our casting. I can’t talk about that yet.

An informal announcement about making an announcement. Incredible.

Zac Efron has been cast in Die In A Gunfight, leading some to believe that the up-and-comer (who I spotted in an episode of Firefly yesterday) might have a part in Vlad after Mandler compared the future of the star’s career to that of Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp’s. Only time will tell.

Some (small) fresh news today as it was reported that powerful Spanish film-TV businessman Enrique Cerezo has taken a minority co-production stake in Italian horror maestro’s stereoscopic 3D adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” The English-language pic, set to go into production from February in Hungary, is budgeted at Euro10 million ($13.2 million).
