3 Is Back With ‘The Ghost You Gave To Me’

I first saw 3 several years ago opening up for Porcupine Tree. Immediately hooked, I saw them again on the Progressive Nation tour with Dream Theater, Opeth, and Between The Buried And Me. Their album The End Is Begun is still a favorite of mine and one that I highly recommend to people who are interested in getting into some heavy prog.

Well, the official word is out that a new 3 album, The Ghost You Gave To Me, will be coming out in early October. Queue me pitching a tent. In my backyard. God, sometimes you people disappoint me so much.
Check after the jump to hear their new single, Numbers, and make sure to head to their landing page to order a copy of their latest album.

Yet Another New Dream Theater Song Snippet Available

Dream Theater must feel like they’ve got a lot to prove ever since they added in Mike Mangini as the new drummer. That’s the only explanation I can come up with as to why they’ve been putting out so many different song snippets (On The Backs Of Angels and Bridges In The Sky). However, this new song snippet, which comes from Breaking All Illusions, really has me hooked. It sounds like old Dream Theater, the kind that I used to love listening to over and over again.

Check out the snippet after the jump and make sure to pre-order your copy of A Dramatic Turn Of Events

Stream The Entire Adrenaline Mob EP Right Now

After Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater and a different drummer was selected for Avenged Sevenfold, many people were wondering what was in the future for the renowned drummer. Well, people didn’t have to wait long as Adrenaline Mob was announced. Comprised of Mike on drums with Russ Allen (Symphony X) on vocals, Mike Orlando (Sonic Stomp) and Rich Ward (Stuck Mojo, Fozzy) on guitars, with Paul DiLeo on bass, the five piece is bringing some hard rock/metal to the music scene.

Personally, I think it brings nothing new to the table but still sounds solid. I’d give it a few listens and then put it aside while I wait patiently for a full release.
After the jump, you can stream the entire Adrenaline Mob EP that is slated for release tomorrow.

Dream Theater Stream Snippet Of New Song ‘Bridges In The Sky’

A few weeks ago, Dream Theater streamed On The Backs Of Angels, a song off the upcoming album A Dramatic Turn Of Events to quell any fears that new drummer Mike Mangini wasn’t able to match Mike Portnoy’s speed, creativity, and finesse. Personally, I think the track proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Well, for those of you that still have lingering doubts, DT has released a snippet of a new song, Bridges In The Sky, which you can stream HERE (thanks for not allowing me to embed it YouTube….punk…).

Below is On The Backs Of Angels, for those of you who might’ve missed it.

Album Review: Limp Bizkit ‘Gold Cobra’

There are a handful of bands that incite such a violent reaction as Limp Bizkit. There’s Nickelback, Insane Clown Posse, U2 and that’s all I can really think of off the top of my head. These bands are generally reviled or mocked endlessly and, for some reason, are wildly successful. Nickelback consistently puts out platinum selling albums, ICP continues to somehow afford the ability to make movies and U2 manages to put out the same sounding album over and over again with great success. As for Limp Bizkit, people mock the ever-living hell out of them and they laugh it off all the way to the bank. So, how does the band fare on Gold Cobra, their latest endeavor? Well, check out after the jump for the answer.

Dream Theater have set Sept. 13th as the release date for their next album, A Dramatic Turn Of Events. This will be the band’s first album with new drummer Mike Mangini. Mike Mangini Is The New Dream Theater Drummer

After the shock of Mike Portnoy leaving Dream Theater, many (including myself) were wondering what the future held for the band. Being a big fan of Dream Theater for many years (hell, I even flew out to New York and was at the Score show), it was near impossible to think of a Portnoy-less Dream Theater. The man was so iconic as the spokesman for the band that having him gone felt like the band was gone. But as the group has said, ‘The Spirit Carries On’.

Through a three-part web-based video series, the rest of the DT members tried out seven astonishing drummers to see who would fit into the family, ending with Mike Mangini as the top pick (you can see the moment he is chosen in the third video at the 14:00 mark). Although I’ve told you who the drummer is, it’s still really worth checking out the series as it’s very well put together. The first part is here, the second part below and the third part is here

Original: Most Anticipated Metal Albums Of 2011

With the recent release of Nola sludge legends Crowbar’s much anticipated new album, Sever The Wicked Hand, I started to think about what other huge albums 2011 has to offer the metalheads among us. With new albums from genre heavyweights like Atheist, Fear Factory, and Agalloch turning last year into a seriously stellar year for metal, 2010 is going to be hard to top, but here are 10 (+2) albums that I think will give 2011 more than just a fighting chance. BD Music Worst Of 2010: Jonny B’s Picks

I didn’t really run into many albums, or even songs for that matter, that I TRULY hated this year. Then again, I didn’t really put myself in a position to have to face much of that. Rather, this list of ‘Worst of 2010′ is going to reflect upon several situations that arose this past year which shocked and affected me. Read for on my ‘Worst of 2010′.

OMFG Of The Day: Mike Portnoy Quits Dream Theater

Updated with the response from the rest of Dream Theater after the jump.

I’ve been a Dream Theater fan since 1999. Yeah, that’s late in the Dream Theater game but still early enough to catch some amazing albums and definitely enough times to see them in concert. Hell, I flew out to New York to see the Score performance. Can I see myself in the DVD? Hell no! I’m way in the nosebleeds! But I was there. Their music helped me through some of the toughest times in my life and also inspired me as a musician and as a songwriter. So to hear that Mike Portnoy, the original drummer, the voice of the band, the creator, has decided to quit has really shaken me and left me somewhat speechless. After the jump is the written explanation from Mike himself about his decision to quite Dream Theater. This was not the news I was expecting to see or ever read, but I can understand where he is coming from once I read through his statement.

Static Impulse is set for a September 28th release on InsideOut Music and was mixed and mastered by the renowned Jens Borgen (Opeth, Katatonia).

LaBrie states: “Hi everyone. The release of Static Impulse is one that the whole band is psyched about. This is modern Metal and as heavy and relevant as any other band out there going in a similar musical direction. There are riffs that will blow your head off and melodies both musically and vocally that are hypnotic. Get in the driver’s seat and let the ears bleed. Enjoy and see you out there with a tour to follow up and support this release.”

Guillory further comments: “One year and two months in the making and we’re finally done. I’m really pleased with the way this record came out. James sounds fantastic, as well as the rest of the guys. Without a doubt, it’s our heaviest record thus far yet at the same time, it’s also our most melodic. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”

In addition to Dream Theater’s numerous studio and live releases, LaBrie has also appeared on releases by Fates Warning, Redemption, Trent Gardner’s Explorer’s Club, Leonardo The Absolute Man, Frameshift, Ayreon’s The Human Equation, as well as tribute albums to Rush, Emerson Lake & Palmer and Queen.

OSI Signs With Metal Blade

OSI (Office Of Strategic Influence), the hard rock duo formed by Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, Dream Theater), has inked a deal with Metal Blade Records! The band has gained a strong underground following since its inception in 2003. OSI already has 3 full length records and an EP in its catalogue of music. Their 2009 album, Blood and includes guests Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). Past participants include Mike Portnoy on the first two albums, Sean Malone and Steven Wilson on the debut, and Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning) on Free. OSI is currently working on their fourth album and Metal Blade debut for a late 2010 release.
OSI’s music can’t easily be pigeonholed and is a completely different animal when compared to its founders’ other projects. The music is a combination of dark rock chorus’ with atmospheric, often industrial keys and is an eclectic mix of both Moore’s and Matheos’ influences.
Metal Blade founder and CEO Brian Slagel adds: “We are very excited to welcome OSI to the Metal Blade Family. I have been a big fan of the band and all of us here can’t wait to work on the new album.”
Keep an eye out for more news and updates as the band continues work on their new album!
