‘Godzilla’ Starts Shooting In Vancouver And I Eat My Words
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla. has started production in Vancouver under the guidance of helmer Gareth Edwards. Last month I guessed that the film probably wouldn’t start shooting this month because of new writer Frank Darabont’s small window of time in which to turn around a new draft. Well – I’m eating my words (and I’m happy to do it). They’re shooting now. Warner Bros. has also announced that Ken Watanabe (Inception) has joined the production as well.
He joins the previously cast Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Johnson, Juliette Binoche and David Strathairn. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers.
Godzilla will roar on May 16, 2014.
‘Godzilla’ Reboot Will Be Grounded In Reality
The team behind Legendary and Warner Bros.’ Godzilla have done an amazing job in keeping their lips sealed tight. No information has come out of the process other than this past Comic-Con’s premiere of a teaser and one-sheet.
The boys at Collider have attempted to get producer Dan Lin to break the silence on the latest reboot that’s to be helmed by Gareth Edwards. He at least gets some info on the production schedule…and a bit more.
“We’re planning to film in March,” said Lin. “We are in deep pre-production. Gareth [Edwards] has really mapped out his vision for the movie, you saw the teaser, but Gareth thanks to Thomas Tull’s help he took over a whole stage on the Warner Brothers lot and not only showed the teaser you saw, he had some models built of Godzilla, he had art decorated all over the soundstage, he had pre-vis of some of the big action sequences in the movie. So we’re in deep pre-production and Gareth’s vision of the movie is really exciting it’s a true re-boot of Godzilla. And you saw from the Comic-Con footage it is a grounded, realistic version of Godzilla. What would happen if Godzilla came into our world today?”
This seems like the obvious direction to take the franchise, and insiders have told me the difficulty they had in coming up with a new take. It should be interesting to see what the collective minds of David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Max Borenstein (Seventh Son) have come up with. Gareth Edwards To Bring Us A Realistic ‘Godzilla’
It’s kind of amazing the amount of buzz surrounding Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla reboot, and somehow there’s literally zero information about it. The Coventry Telegraph’s Geek Files is one of the first to get director Gareth Edwards to talk, and here’s what he spilled:
“I’ve never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that’s lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity! But the reaction has been amazing and I can’t wait for the fans to see our final product.” he told the site.
“I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.
“Everyone warns you about working for Hollywood and how you can get treated in a certain way but my experience has been the polar opposite. Thomas Tull (founder of Legendary) has been very supportive.”
What we’ve learned is that he’s aiming for a realistic approach, so don’t expect to see a bunch of Godzilla babies running around Madison Square Garden. Godzilla is to begin casting soon for a May 16, 2014 release. READ MORE
‘Godzilla’ Script Gets Rewrite, Casting To Begin Soon
With buzz of the project rising, Legendary has brought in Iron Man 3 and Sherlock Holmes 3 scribe Drew Pearce to do a rewrite on Godzilla before it gets the casting process under way, reports Variety.
Godzilla has gained a lot of momentum after Legendary previewed a short test reel of the pic at the San Diego Comic-Con this past July, and sources tell the site that Pearce is now being brought in to do a four-week polish on the script.
Monsters director Gareth Edwards is still helming the pic, with Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jon Jashni, Thomas Tull and Brian Rogers producing.
Previous drafts were penned by David Callahan, who wrote the original draft, as well as David Goyer and Max Borenstein. Sources add that the polish isn’t being done because Legendary has any major problems with the script; it wants to age up the characters so that they fit the prototype of the actors they would like to target.
