Ash-The-Evil-Dead

Meet the “Ash-a-Likes”! 10 Famous Character Inspired By Ashley J. Williams!

Even before Sam Raimi and company fully defined the character in Evil Dead II, Ash was always a strange hero. For much of the more seriously minded The Evil Dead, we see Ash cowering in the background while the more manly Scotty takes care of business. It’s only when Scotty finds defeat (and rape?) at the hands of some Evil Dead trees that Ash finally steps up to the plate.

That’s pretty much how he’s been ever since. We know Ash as a mouthy idiot who can dish out violence but is just as likely to talk tough and run away from it (when he’s not getting knocked around and abused like a rag doll, that is). We love Ash, but he’s not the only character of this type. There are many other Ash-a-Likes out there, some knowing ripoffs, others mere coincidences.

Return of the Dead Pixels Podcast, (With An Added Dose of Adam)

Have you been reading my words aloud, trying to match a voice to them so you could more easily pretend what it would be like if I was sitting next to you, late at night, with my hand on your upper thigh? Maybe you picture me uttering Shakespearean dialogue in the velvety tones of James Earl Jones, or with the disarming charm of Nolan North? If you answered yes then look no further, because the Dead Pixels Podcast is back and this time it’s brought with it an added dose of yours truly.

From now on you can expect new episodes of the podcast to go up every second sunday of the month. I suppose those of you who enjoy surprises might not be too fond of the lack of unexpected episodes, but as my grandpa always says, tough shit, (don’t listen to him, he’s a mean dude.) So if you want to hear TJ and I attempt a discussion on video game news like the so-so E3, The Secret World, and Duke Nukem Forever, this might be for you. Sadly, neither of us have great attention spans so we also found ourselves in tangents on Transformers 3, The Human Centipede, and the really fucking tasty Mountain Dew: Pitch Black. More from TJ past the break. READ MORE

Toy Fair ’11: Mattel’s Newest ‘Ghostbusters’, Louis Tully!

It really bums me out that I just turned 30. What I would have done for the respect of toy companies when I was 6. I literally have no space for all of this awesomeness, and my imagination has taken a turn for the worst (not that I could see myself literally “playing” with these).

Still, I might have to muster up a spot for Vinz Clortho, the Keymaster of Gozer, a loyal minion demi-god who obeys The Destructor. In the 1984 Ghostbusters, Vinz possessed Louis Tully (Rick Moranis) and became one of the most beloved characters in the franchise (I would have loved his party!) This figure comes with an array of extras, including the dog head from the finale. Available in March.

Also available this March is “Marshmallow Mess Ray” who comes with a messy logo. In May you can snag “Egon with Lab Coat”, which appears to come with the library ghost! Lastly, in July Mattel releases “Winston with Slime Blower”.

I think the one thing that all of the toy companies are missing are toy “displays”. I’m not really looking to have Marshmallow Mess Ray and Vinz Clortho just handing out on my desk. I want a rooftop piece with a ginormous Stay Puft Marshmallow Man climbing up. NECA has the right idea with their Crow rooftop fight piece, and the Friday the 13th shrine set, but no toy company has really gone out of their way to create something spectacular (like a possessed Dana (with removable shirt) apartment set that comes with a demonic refrigerator).

Toy Fair ’11: AWESOME ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ Trilogy Figs, ‘Walking Dead’ Busts

OMFG, OMFG!

Quickly turning their back on the 2010 remake, NECA has unveiled three brand new Freddy Krueger action figures based on the film’s initial trilogy! These badass A Nightmare on Elm Street toys bring us new Freddy’s from the title film, Freddy’s Revenge (sorry, no dead parakeet), and Dream Warriors. Each comes with an interchangeable head. But in all seriousness, who wouldn’t want the actual “Dream Warriors” in toy form? “Yo, Freddy! Where you hiding at, you burnt-faced pussy?” – Roland Kincaid

In addition, inside we threw up a quick look at NECA’s “The Walking Dead” busts. Eh, I’ll watch for McFarlane’s toy line based on Robert Kirkman’s comic.

Toy Fair ’11: ‘Gremlins 2,’ ‘Predators’ and ‘Terminator’!

While it appears NECA is continuing to shy away from horror lines based on specific franchises, they do have some really cool stuff in the pipeline.

Next to the new Freddy Krueger’s (images in next story), my favorite upcoming line is from Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Joe Dante’s 1990 sequel featuring all sorts of interesting and new characters from “Rambo Gizmo” to the “Brain Gremlin”, “Mohawk/Stripe”, “Spider Gremlin” and more!

NECA also unveiled some absolutely incredible figures based on both James Cameron’s 1984 The Terminator and the 1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The highlight of the batch are the original “Terminator” toys as portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Freakin’ AWESOME.

Lastly, inside you’ll find images of even more Predator figures from this past summer’s Predators, along with the toy based on the alien hunter from Predator 2. I’m not exactly sure who keeps buying all these. Who has a wall full of like 3o Predator toys? The 40-year-old virgin maybe?

Toy Fair ’11: NECA’s Video Game Figs ‘Gears of War,’ ‘Bioshock’ & ‘Duke Nukem’

While the New York Toy Fair kicked off yesterday, this morning the first images that we (horror fiends) care about began to appear.

Kicking off our sure to be overloaded coverage are your first looks at NECA’s upcoming video game toy lines.

First and probably the coolest is “Duke Nukem” figure based on the forthcoming highly anticipated “Duke Nukem Forever,” in stores May 3.

Then there’s a look at four new toys from the ever-so-awesome “Bioshock 2″ featuring a new “Big Daddy” and a “Brute Slicer.”

Lastly, expect a whopping 8 figures from Microsoft Games Studios “Gears of War 3″, in stores this fall (when the game is also released).
