October is halfway over, and we’ve still got a ton of Blu-ray and DVD horror releases coming our way. In this week’s round-up, I take a look at the Jersey Devil flick The Barrens (10/09/12), the very strange Excision (10/16/12), Warner Bros. Little Shop Of Horrors Blu-ray (10/09/12) with the original ending (finally!), and Universal’s super-awful Wolf Man/Van Helsing abomination Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (10/09/12). Oh, and just for good measure, a gander at Synapse’s Basket Case 3 DVD (10/09/12) – yes, the trilogy closer is finally back in print! Check out my thoughts on the disc specs – and a little bit about the films too – after the break. READ MORE

[Interview] Sean Stone Talks About The Real-Life Adventures That Led To ‘Greystone Park’

Greystone Park is available on VOD and hits DVD today, October 16 through Xlrator Media. In the film, “Based on true events, the film follows three aspiring filmmakers trying to document unexplainable events in an abandoned insane asylum known as Greystone Park. The trio stumble across a mysterious realm of escaped patients, ghosts and demonic shadows, as they try to uncover the truth behind Greystone Park.”

I recently hopped on the phone with writer/director/star Sean Stone to discuss how he got involved in the real-life ghost hunting that led to the project. We also discuss his documentary style approach and how his father, Oliver Stone, influenced the project.

[DVD Review] ‘The Haunting Hour’ Is Great For Your Younger Siblings But Probably Not You

If you grew up during the 90’s, odds are you’ve read your fair share of Goosebumps books. R.L. Stine’s series never had the cultural significance of, say, Harry Potter, but it was a big deal in the sense that it got a lot of kids into reading. Almost every month, Scholastic put out a new schlocky entry in the series that was (usually) fun and suspenseful enough for their demographic. Stine had the market cornered pretty well at one point in time; the elementary and middle school set were hooked on Goosebumps while high schoolers were getting into Fear Street. READ MORE

‘My Sucky Teen Romance’ Hits Blu/DVD/VOD Tomorrow! We Catch Up With Writer/Director Emily Hagins

MPI Media Group’s My Sucky Teen Romance, the breakthrough feature film from writer-director Emily Hagins (head here for a more in-depth interview), will be released on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, September 4. It’s also going to be available on iTunes (link here) and most VOD platforms.

I recently caught up with Hagins at the Los Angeles premiere of the film – literally seconds after the movie started – and we talked about the long journey of bringing MSTR to the screen (I think I saw the original trailer almost 2 years ago). “As of this moment I’ve just intro’d the film and it started about 15 seconds ago. I’m probably the most nervous right now and I’ll calm down in a few minutes. I just hope people have fun with it and have a good time with it and accept it for what it is, because it’s not a big budget blockbuster or anything like that. But I think the people who are going to enjoy it will enjoy it. It’s exciting to share it with people. Being done with it is pretty surreal because people were asking me what my new project was 6 months ago – and there was still so much MSTR stuff that needed to be done. So being able refer to this as a thing of the past is interesting because we sold this film over a year ago and it’s only now just finishing up.”

If you haven’t seen the film, you should check it out. She’s only getting started and is definitely a talent you want to keep our eye on. READ MORE

[Interview] Kristen Connolly On The Beating She Takes In ‘The Cabin In The Woods’, Shooting ‘The Bay’

Joss Whedon (The Avengers, TV’s “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) co-wrote the magnificent The Cabin In The Woods. Directed by Goddard, the film arrives on Blu-ray Disc (plus Digital Copy), DVD (plus Digital Copy) on September 18th. from Lionsgate. And if you’re feeling impatient (or don’t like discs) it will be available as a digital download – with some extras – this Tuesday, September 4th (iTunes link here).

Last week I hopped on the phone with Kristen Connolly, who plays final girl Dana in the film. We discussed the physical demands of the role, working with Drew Goddard and the differences between Cabin and her work in the upcoming The Bay.

In the film, “A rambunctious group of five college friends steal away for a weekend of debauchery in an isolated country cabin, only to be attacked by horrific supernatural creatures in a night of endless terror and bloodshed. Sound familiar? Just wait. As the teens begin to exhibit standard horror movie behavior, a group of technicians in a control room are scrutinizing, and sometimes even controlling, every move the terrified kids make. With their efforts continually thwarted by the all-powerful eye in the sky, do they have any chance of escape?

Darren Lynn Bousman’s ‘The Barrens’ Dated For Blu-Ray And Theatrical Release; Trailer!

Updated with the film’s trailer!

It’s been a while since we’ve heard much about Darren Lynn Bousman’s psychological horror The Barrens, which stars Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner, Erik Knudsen, J Larose, Allie MacDonald, Max Topplin and Peter DaCunha. The film played Cannes in May and now we’ve learned that the film will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray on October 9th. But you can see it theatrically! On the big screen! It opens in limited release on September 28th! There’s also a TUGG theatrical campaign in the works – but I’d advise you to just go ahead and check your local listings and see it on the 28th. Let exhibitors know you want to see it with your wallet, not some petition.

In the film Moyer plays “a man who takes his family on a camping trip to the more than 1 million acres of dense forest known as the New Jersey Pine Barrens, where he becomes convinced they’re being stalked by the legendary winged monster that looks like a deformed hybrid of several different animals.” The legend of The Jersey Devil has been passed along for hundreds of years, as the creature has risen from obscurity to take its place alongside the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot and the Chupacabra.

[BD Review] ‘The Hunt’ Shoots the American Screenplay Right Between the Eyes

When Alex, a French writer, receives a final ultimatum from his editor to come up with a story that will boost ratings, he chases down a dangerous lead from a prostitute in search of video evidence of corruption, and ends up stumbling across a private game amongst the rich, where humans are hunted as prey in the woodlands, for large sums of money. What transpires next mortally shoots the standard American screenplay right between the eyes.

This obscure and low budget release from relatively unknown French director Thomas Szczepanski comes to us all from MVD – a distribution company known for questionable releases riddled with bad films nobody would otherwise take a second look at. But The Hunt is an exception to that rule. Most easily and oddly described as a cross between Hostel and Eyes Wide Shut, The Hunt approaches the “torture and kill for money and sport” scenario and turns it on its head, coming at it from a completely original perspective. And while the story starts off generic and familiar, its a guarantee that you have no idea how this plays out by the end of the film. READ MORE

[Closer to Death] What Exactly Is A Revenant?

Most of you reading this are amply privy to the plethora of variations within the family of “the undead”. Zombies, spectres, ghosts, vampires – the list goes on and on. But what about the revenant? Are you familiar? Enough to be able to explain the difference to your friends?

With The Revenant coming out in theaters and on disc soon, its time to take a look at what makes this legendary blood sucking creature of the night different from the zombie, or the vampire. Read on, and consider yourself yet another inch closer to death.

The word “revenant” is derived from the Latin word “revenans”, which means “returning”. In French, it is related to the verb “revenir”, which means “to come back”.

A revenant is a ghost visible to the common eye, or an animated corpse that has returned from the grave. While this is very close to the zombie and vampire, there are differences that make it distinctive from the two. READ MORE

[BD Review] ‘Grimm: Season 1′ Isn’t For Kids

Always down for a good horror series, I like to pass judgment on the newbies myself. As genre fans, do we care about Nielsen ratings? We just want a good dark story we can call our own. While others fell by the wayside this past year (The River, The Killing), a miniscule few survived the network cuts. One of them is Grimm, and if you haven’t caught on yet, this horror/cop drama is imaginative and intriguing and worth your time and support.

There were days, way back when, when you couldn’t even get good horror on cable. Non theater access to Dawn of the Dead and the like was something I had always longed for in a vision of a possible future. Now we have our zombie series wet dream, The Walking Dead, and shows like Grimm that inject a welcome amount of fictional blackness into our humble homes. While Grimm plays on NBC, and can’t hold a candle to the rawness of Kirkman’s series, it’s about as good as you can expect from a public, family network. Gore, monstrous violence, and intrigue; enough to keep us coming back each week. READ MORE

Exclusive ‘Lovely Molly’ Blu-ray Feature “Is It Real?”

I loved Lovely Molly. The film is currently available on demand DVD from July 16th through September 15th, but if you’re a Blu nut like me you’ll want to wait just a few more weeks. Image Entertainment will release the DVD and Blu-ray of Lovely Molly (which stars Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis, Alexandra Holde, and Jane Fleming) on August 28th. Extras will include 4 features (“Path To Madness”, “Haunted Past”, “Demonic Forces”, “Is It Real”), plus the theatrical trailer.

And now we have an exclusive look at one of those extras, the six and a half minute “Is It Real?”

From Blair Witch co-drector Eduardo Sanchez, “‘Lovely Molly’ is a gripping horror thriller that begins as newlywed Molly Reynolds moves back into her long-abandoned childhood home. Soon, she experiences unnerving and impossible things. What starts as a simple story about things going bump in the night escalates into a battle for dominion over Molly’s spirit, as she is beset by a cunning, malevolent force bent on wreaking havoc and terror on Molly and her family. Richly exploring the parallels between psychosis, addiction, and demonic possession to chilling effect, ‘Lovely Molly’ shows us what really happens before the exorcist arrives.

Lovely Molly had its World Premiere to critical acclaim at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness and had its U.S. premiere at the 2012 South By Southwest Film Festival. Head inside for the clip! READ MORE

Artwork And Preliminary Specs For ‘Dark Shadows’ DVD/Blu-ray

Warner Home Video announced Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp, for home video on October 2 a few weeks back. And now they’ve gotten around to releasing the artwork.

The story focuses on Barnabas Collins (Depp), who was transformed into a vampire by a jilted lover (Eva Green’s witch Angelique) way back in the 1700s and buried. He’s just been dug up, and attempts to reintegrate with his descendants, led by Michelle Pfeiffer’s Elizabeth and Jonny Lee Miller’s Roger – despite the fact that Angelique is still around and still not in a forgiving mood.write your review here.

The DVD will contain the featurette The Collinses: Every Family Has Its Demons and the the Blu-ray will have that featurette, a Maximum Movie Mode option, plus a ton of deleted scenes. Maybe the deleted scenes will help the movie make sense? Look for it in stores on October 2nd.

Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano’s ‘Penumbra’ To Hit DVD On August 28th

On April 20th, IFC Midnight released Penumbra, nationwide on IFC Midnight Cable VOD and Digital Outlets (SundanceNOW, iTunes, Amazon Streaming, XBOX Zune, Playstation Unlimited). But some of us (me) still love physical media – and to that end the film hits DVD on August 28th. Unfortunately it appears as though it’s just a DVD release and not Blu-ray.

Combining stylistic elements of classic Polanski with a contemporary vision that rivals anyone working in horror today, the Bogliano brothers’ ‘Penumbra’ is a superbly realized South American horror slow-burner. Marga is a highly motivated, arrogant and successful business woman on assignment in Buenos Aires – a city she hate and whose people she loathes. While in the Argentina capital on a day the whole population is waiting to view a rare solar eclipse, she must also find a new tenant for her family’s decrepit apartment. Rapidly losing her patience waiting for one applicant, she runs into the mysterious Jorge lurking outside the front door of the place who informs her that he has a client willing to pay four times what she is asking in rent. There’s one catch – the paperwork must be signed immediately. As greedy Marga waits to complete the transaction, several of Jorge’s associates suspiciously appear at the apartment ready to strip the wallpaper. And what’s behind the decor signals a startling fate worse than death – or should that be life!

[Horror In Your House] July 14th, 2012

This week has a bevy of films that are now available for to line the shelves of your home, but there’s not many that I’d actually want up there for all to see. In fact, outside of Silent House, which deservedly received mixed reviews, I’d say stay away and save your money for something you really like. Still though, you could do much worse.
