[SXSW '13 Interview] AJ Bowen On ‘You’re Next’, ‘Grow Up, Tony Phillips’ And Not “Faking It” Through Horror

AJ Bowen (A Horrible Way To Die) had both You’re Next and Grow Up, Tony Phillips at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, TX. While the first film was one of my favorites of 2011 (and one of my favorites of 2013 – it holds up), you probably need no introduction to it – except for the question many of you ask at this point, “where is the trailer?” The answer to that seems to be that it will be paired with Evil Dead in the first week of April. Update: It’s March 28th for the trailer. I’m going to miss not getting that question every day for 18 months!

The latter film, Grow Up, Tony Phillips, is the 4th directorial effort from genre favorite Emily Hagins (My Sucky Teen Romance). While it’s by no stretch of the imagination a horror film – it is a sweet and poignant look at Halloween and what it means to embrace that holiday in an “age appropriate” manner. In that regard it’s almost a (funny) dramatization of a character that might have appeared in An American Scream. If you’re a fan of Hagins’ earlier work, I’d recommend checking it out regardless of genre – it’s definitely a more polished iteration of that aesthetic.

AJ Bowen plays “Pete” in the film, and the role couldn’t possibly be more different from what he achieves in You’re Next. I caught up with Bowen after the fest wound down to talk about what it was like to have two films there and get his thoughts the delicate nature of moving in and out (and back into) the horror genre. I also tried to scoop him on Ti West’s upcoming Eli Roth produced The Sacrament – but he did an expertly friendly job of shutting me down on that one.

[BD Review] ‘The Last Exorcism Part II’ Boring Horror Loaded With Filler

Since CBS Films wouldn’t screen the film for critics, Evan Dickson hit a midnight screening of Ed Gass-Donnelly’s The Last Exorcism Part II, now in theaters everywhere, in hopes of witnessing the last great exorcism. Instead, he felt duped by yet another snail-paced film jam-packed with filler.

Since this installment drops the POV approach I was actually kind of excited for the format shakeup here, stupidly thinking that maybe things would be sped along and an actual story would be told,” said Dickson in his review. “Nope! If anything, this new sequel breaks new ground in treading water, wasting time and general narrative inertia. It’s an almost Herculean feat of nothingness.

It’s sort of a shame, too, because he says Ashley Bell’s performance is pretty great: “Bell’s depiction of Nell is good enough to deserve a better movie. At one point I considered giving the film a pass on that merit alone” that was until he realized there were still 70 minutes left in the movie…

Click here to read the review in its entirety, or take the time to write your own review to tell all of Bloody YOUR thoughts.

[BD Review] ‘The Last Exorcism Part II’ Accomplishes Next To Nothing

The Last Exorcism Part 2 made me long for the comparatively breakneck pace of the first film. While there’s some fascinating stuff happening in found footage on an indie level, the mainstream features hinging on the conceit are still (for the most part) stuck in the “nothing happens for the first 80 minutes” mode. Since this installment drops the POV approach I was actually kind of excited for the format shakeup here, stupidly thinking that maybe things would be sped along and an actual story would be told. Nope! If anything, this new sequel breaks new ground in treading water, wasting time and general narrative inertia. It’s an almost Herculean feat of nothingness.

Unencumbered by the justification of camera angles, The Last Exorcism Part 2 roams free in the slow burn wilderness of modest expectations. It picks up right where the first film left off, looks around, and scurries into oblivion. Nell Sweetzer – played by the quite good Ashley Bell – still isn’t quite right. After she crawls into the wrong bed in the wrong house she’s taken in by the kindly Frank Merle [Muse Watson], who places her in what basically amounts to a halfway house for troubled girls. Ostensibly troubled, I should say, since the movie can’t be bothered to develop any of them beyond establishing one girl’s disregard for stereo imaging by sharing her iPod earbuds with Nell five seconds after meeting her. Uninterestingly enough, this may be the first halfway house in cinema history populated entirely by normal people.

Nell gets a job as a maid at a local hotel and finds herself intrigued by all of the carnal sounds emitting from its hallways. This is actually one area in which the film does some nice character work. You can sense Nell’s temptation, not only to explore her own sexuality – but to be normal. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t a few nice character beats here featuring her grappling with New Orleans, and life, in general. But short films have character beats too and there’s no reason this movie needed to be longer than a 15 minute webisode. The film just plays these beats over and over again like a mobius strip until it looks at its watch and decides it’s time for some sort of truncated third act. Truly, any sense of escalation is pure wishful thinking on the part of the audience after watching the same scenario unfold countless times.

Finally, the film realizes that it’s hit the mandatory minimum length for a theatrical feature and decides to wrap things up. Director Ed Gass-Donnelly, having wisely kept things in neutral for 75 minutes, needs only to tap slightly on the accelerator to establish that this sputtering wretch is indeed drawing to a close. There’s a quick exorcism (voodoo this time) that utterly lacks the visceral impact of the first film, a brief return to the halfway house and a denouement punctuated by flashes of what may be the worst CGI flames to ever leap out of a DCP.

It’s a shame because The Last Exorcism Part 2 features some good performances and decent technical work. Bell’s depiction of Nell is good enough to deserve a better movie. At one point I considered giving the film a pass on that merit alone. But that was before I realized I’d only been in the theater for 18 minutes and there were 70 left to go.

New Clip From ‘The Last Exorcism Part II’ Proves The Internet Is Written In Ink

CBS Films has released a new clip from The Last Exorcism Part II, their sequel to the found-footage horror opening in theaters March 1. This clip from the Ed Gass-Donnelly directed sequel hints at some mean girl posturing as Nell’s past is discovered on YouTube.

Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found alone and terrified in the woods. Back in the relative safety of civilization, Nell realizes that she can’t remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean herlast exorcism was just the beginning.

Scream In Horror For The Very First Hi-Res Still From Eli Roth’s ‘The Green Inferno’!!

Eli Roth fans rejoice as the director of Cabin Fever and Hostel takes on a new genre: cannibals.

Production recently wrapped in Peru and Chile on The Green Inferno, Roth’s cannibal horror starring Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns, Magda Apanowicz and Sky Ferreria.

Blood Disgusting has your first ever look with the following hi-res still!

Apparently inspired by Italo mondo films like Ruggero Deodato’s notorious 1980 Cannibal Holocaust and Antonio Climati’s 1988 Natura contro (also known as The Green Inferno and Cannibal Holocaust II), The Green Inferno follows an idealistic student and a group of naive do-gooders who are captured by cannibalistic Indios after their plane crash lands in the Peruvian jungle.

Roth revealed something more official on his Tumblr: “A group of student activists from New York City travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe, but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they saved.READ MORE

The Insane True Story Of Eli Roth’s ‘The Green Inferno’; Tribes Laugh At ‘Cannibal Holocaust’!

While we sit back on our tablets reading and snarking about upcoming films, many don’t understand just how difficult the filmmaking process can be. Doing it with the aid of millions of dollars, or on a posh stage is one thing-but taking talent deep into the Amazon is entirely new game. Of course, if you’re a terrible filmmaker, the viewer won’t even know you were deep in the jungle, thus you may as well have used a green screen. But we’re talking about Eli Roth here, director of horror classics including Cabin Fever and Hostel.

Riffing on the English title for Cannibal Holocaust II, Roth took his crew deep into the Amazon for The Green Inferno, which see student activists from comfy NYC travel to the remote forests of Peru to stage a protest but instead they discover a tribe of not-that-friendly cannibals. Roth, who used many stages for his Hostel films, this time took his cast, including Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns, Magda Apanowicz and Sky Ferreria, way out of their comfort zone. Dig this…

We went in the Amazon deeper than anyone has ever shot a movie before,” Roth told Empire. “I went so far up the river, we went to a village where they had no electricity, no running water, and they never before had seen a movie or television. We had to explain to them conceptually what a movie was, and we brought a television and a generator and we showed them Cannibal Holocaust. They thought it was the funniest thing that they had ever seen, but we had to know whether they were down with it to let us in their village.

The real-life terror comes in the Roth’s reflecting back to the Amazon set: “Thank God no one got killed, but there were tarantulas, there were spider bites, there were snakes. It was insane. Everybody had to get de-parasited after we got back, but the footage was incredible. I’m just editing the material right now.

Though, speaking on Cannibal Holocaust similarities, Roth explains it’s one of his favorite movies, “but I really wanted to do something that was much more like a Werner Herzog movie. I wanted it to look like The New World, The Mission, or Aguirre: The Wrath of God.

The Green Inferno is now in post-production for possible 2014 release.

[TV] The Trailer For Season One Of Eli Roth’s “Hemlock Grove” Is Here!

The trailer for the first season of the Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove has it the web. It actually looks like it could be pretty good! I dig the tone, it’s almost like what would happen if “True Blood” actually had a sense of menace (with a little bit of “Twin Peaks” thrown in)!

The pilot was directed by Eli Roth and co-written by Brian McGreevy. Dougray Scott and Famke Janssen also star in this new television series that will premiere exclusively on Netflix.

Revolves around the murder of a young girl found close to the former Godfrey steel mill. The suspects in her killing include Peter (Landon Liboiron), a 17-year-old Gypsy kid from the wrong side of the tracks, and Roman (Bill Skarsgard), the arrogant Godfrey Scion, whose sister Shelley is disturbingly deformed and whose mother, Olivia (Janssen), is the beautiful and controlling grand dame of Hemlock Grove.
