A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in the present day, Maniac is a reboot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made. Frank (Elijah Wood) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates and the number of victims increases, it becomes clear that Frank is far more dangerous than he seems. With a pulsating electronic score by Rob, the film is an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiraling nightmare of a killer and his victims.
I saw Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac last weekend. And I almost agree with Mr. Disgusting that it’s a masterpiece. I say “almost” because there’s just a few things here and there that kept me from pure elation – but I’d definitely give it at least an 8/10 (Brad gave it a 9/10 in his review). It’s horror’s Drive, stylish moody and addictive. And I have a feeling I’ll like it even more a second time.
Definitely check this out when it opens in select theaters, iTunes and on VOD platforms June 21. I know I’ll be seeing it again. Meanwhile, this trailer is pretty much nails the tone and may be the best promo reel we’ve yet seen for the film.

It hits select theaters and VOD platforms June 21, but it also seemse to be getting a release in Japan, which makes total sense. I think the Japanese culutre has a stronger stomach for this type of film that American mainstream culture. So it makes sense that we now have a cool new Japanese poster for this “modern horror classic” (review here).

Extraterrestrial and Time Crimes director Nacho Vigalondo recently wrapped Open Windows, described as an innovative, high-tech suspense thriller unfolding on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet.
Starring Elijah Wood (Maniac) and Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience, Would You Rather?), the plot revolves around a desperate search by Wood’s character for an actress (played by Grey), who has been abducted by vicious villain Chord, played by British actor Neil Maskell.

One of the perks and pains of owning Bloody Disgusting is that I get to see movies early – like, extremely early – which is great for pimping a film, but terrible for conversation. It still pains me that we can’t celebrate the release of All the Boys Love Mandy Lane here in the States, and from what I’m hearing, the release of Franck Khalfoun’s horror masterpiece Maniac is in jeopardy. I don’t know what’s going on just yet, but there’s word that IFC Films is having issues releasing the slasher remake starring Elijah Wood.

The clip, featuring the song “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazzarus (as a reference to The Silence of the Lambs), features a sexy scene between Frank (Elijah Wood) and Lucie (Megan Duffy), which ends in tragedy and the staple scalping.

While, sadly, I haven’t seen it I was certainly digging on the snippets of the score (by “Rob”) that were released this morning. And just like that… the entire thing is now available! My favorite horror film of 2012, one of the best parts of Franck Khalfoun’s forthcoming Maniac remake is the absolutely badass score.

One of my favorite movies of the year is IFC’s forthcoming Maniac, a brutal cinema verite horror film from French director Franck Khalfoun. Some new stills have arrived putting on display the cast, which includes Elijah Wood, Nora Arnezeder, Genevieve Alexandra, America Olivo, Morgane Slemp, Sal Landi, Dan Hunter, Freedom, Délé Ogundiran, Steffinnie Phrommany and Joshua De La Garza.

IFC Midnight will be releasing director Franck Khalfoun’s thriller Maniac, at some point next year (no exact word on when, though). Written by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur, Maniac is a reboot of director William Lustig’s 1980 cult pic of the same name. The film stars Elijah Wood as a serial killer and I was already pretty stoked to see this based on the trailer, and word-of-mouth from a recent LA screening has been amazing which has me even more amped. And this new trailer, via the Film Stage, backs that up.

Bloody Disgusting learned out of AFM that Stealth Media is getting behind Splinter and The Grudge 3‘s Toby Wilkins latest creature feature, Dead Sand, which will star Zombieland and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane‘s Amber Heard (pictured). In the film, “Two humvees tear across a desert. Soldiers escort a captured terrorist leader, Gabir. During a “pit stop,” Gabir escapes into a nearby abandoned industrial complex. The sodliers chase, but before they find Gabir…an inhuman creature finds them. A frightful radio transmission is all that remains of their final mission…”
K5 International has boarded international sales for Robert Eggers’ The Witch of New-Canaan Woode, reports Screen Daily. “The horror film is set in 17th century New England, where a farming family is tormented by an evil witch.” The shoot is planned for spring/summer 2013.
Meanwhile, Maniac‘s Elijah Wood has boarded Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo’s first English-language picture Open Windows, an innovative, high-tech suspense thriller unfolding on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet. Shooting began this week on a high-security set in Madrid. It is Vigalondo’s third feature after the 2008 time-travelling tale Timecrimes and Extraterrestrial, a hit on the fantasy film festival circuit over the past 12 months. “The plot revolves around a desperate search by Wood’s character for an actress, played by The Girlfriend Experience lead Sasha Grey, who has been abducted by vicious villain Chord, played by British actor Neil Maskell.” Spanish producer Lavigne revealed the production would use 12 different types of camera, including webcams, head cameras, tablets, mobile phones, 3D mapping cameras as well as security and satellite cameras to shoot the multi-format picture.
Ryan Kampe’s Visit Films has acquired world sales rights to M Blash’s The Wait starring Jena Malone and Chloë Sevigny, the site also reports. “‘The Wait’ charts what happens when a mysterious phone call from a psychic plunges a family into a state of suspended belief while waiting for their recently deceased mother to be resurrected.” Luke Grimes also stars.
Synchronicity Entertainment, the new genre film production and international sales label launched by Lisa Wilson and Myles Nestel’s The Solution Entertainment Group has unveiled its debut slate of three new feature films including: the horror film Cooties from the co-creator of the Saw franchise and Insidious writer Leigh Whannell and Paranormal Activity producer Steven Schneider; the thriller Due Process starring Golden Globe nominee John Cusack; and the completed psychological thriller Smiley.
Starring Elijah Wood (pictured in Maniac), Cooties is produced by top horror film producer Steven Schneider, who is behind the hugely successful Paranormal Activity franchise including the latest installment, Paranormal Activity 4.
Cooties is written by horror powerhouse Leigh Whannell, who penned and executive produced the Saw films and wrote Insidious.
