[Random Cool] A Revealing Look At Practical Effects In The New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie!

So there’s been a lot of back and forth about whether or not the new Evil Dead is 100% CGI free or if they’re just using a tiny bit here and there for things like wire removal and color grading. I was expecting them to use a tiny bit of it to cover up small stuff that considering we’re in the age when CGI is used to remove blemishes and occasionally slim down the star of a romantic comedy… but maybe not?

Now we’ve got a cool look at a gag that doesn’t cover up its practical nature in the Evil Dead trailer. Thanks to reader DJBlack1313 for pointing it out. You’ll notice a cleaned up version of it above (Edit: The image above is from the first red band teaser – the one inside is from the newer full length) and inside you can see a version of it that made it to the trailer where the tube is visible.

The Fede Alvarez-directed remake stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas. It hits theaters on April 12th, 2013. Be sure to read PART ONE and PART TWO of my set visit!

10 Facts About The New ‘Evil Dead’!!!

Last summer I spent two days in Auckland, New Zealand to check out the set of TriStar and FilmDistrict’s upcoming Evil Dead remake. I’m not going to mince words here, I have never walked away from a set this confident and hopeful that a movie will turn out well. With a lot of these visits you get the feeling that people are just fort of putting on their best face to meet you, and you’re not entirely convinced of their commitment to making a great movie.

Not here. Fede Alvarez is not f*cking around. Neither is producer Rob Tapert. Nor are Robert Gillies (the production designer) or Roger Murray (the prosthetics and props maker). The film’s DP, Aaron Morton, isn’t f*cking around either when it comes to getting those crazy roving tree shots we love so much. And the cast? Enduring all of the prosthetics, pain and hundreds of gallons of blood? Not f*cking around. I’m not talking about a bunch of disinterested dilettantes talking about “how much they love the project.” I’m talking about seeing the bloody proof of it firsthand. I’m not just talking about the scenes we witnessed, but the messy aftermath of everything they’d been shooting up until that point. You just can’t fake a production like this for two days while press is around.

No CGI At All In The New ‘Evil Dead’?!!

Director Fede Alvarez has stated that there is absolutely NO CGI in his upcoming Evil Dead remake. I’m not sure if this statement includes stuff like enhancements or some wire removal here and there (and I wouldn’t care if it didn’t) but the overall gist is that any big, gross gag you might see onscreen was 100% done in-camera and onset.

Speaking with io9 he said, “We didn’t do any CGI in the movie. There’s no CGI in the movie. Everything you will see is real, which was really demanding. This was a very long shoot, 70 days of shooting at night. There’s a reason people use CGI it’s cheaper and faster, I hate that. We researched a lot of magic tricks and illusion tricks. [Like] how you would make someone’s arm disappear.

That last bit, about the illusions, sells it for me. I absolutely think its possible to create all kinds of magic (vines coming out of a mouth, arms being chopped off – various other sh*t I can’t tell you about yet) with a little slight of hand.

The ‘Evil Dead’ Teaser Poster Has Serious, SERIOUS Balls!!!

FilmDistrict has revealed the official teaser poster for Evil Dead, the Fede Alvarez-directed reboot to Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic about a group of kids who unleash demons in a cabin deep in the woods.

The poster – obviously inspired by The Social Network – doesn’t show much, other than the back of a presumably possessed female, along with the bold assertion: “The most terrifying film you will ever experience.

What I love about the proclamation is that the studio isn’t using critic quotes, they’re using their own voice to promise you that come April 12, 2013 you will be a believer. The use of the word “experience” is also telling as it implies you’ll be more than being scared, Evil Dead is a movie that will physically rattle you. They have some serious balls, now let’s hope they live up to the hype!

Jane Levy Is Mortified Of WHAT In This Exclusive ‘Evil Dead’ Image?!

Slightly teased in the mind-blowing trailer premiere (watch it inside), Bloody Disgusting has landed an exclusive look at the second official still from Evil Dead, the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic The Evil Dead.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you’re unaware of the madness that’s unleashed when the Book of the Dead is recited from (again). Some of the footage is absolutely horrific, which is why the following image premiere is so perfect. What you’ll see below is star Jane Levy with the most terrified expression I think I’ve ever seen on film. Clearly, something mortifying is approaching.

Says Alvarez, revealing a minor spoiler that’s displayed within the trailer: “That’s Mia seconds before loosing her tree rape virginity…” The scene is an homage to Raimi’s original where Cheryl (played by Ellen Sandweiss) is raped by a tree.

In theaters April 12, 2013 from FilmDistrict, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. [Random Cool] Dig On This Wicked Fan Made ‘Evil Dead’ Poster!

While scouring Twitter we stumbled onto a piece of fan made art for FilmDistrict’s forthcoming Evil Dead that blew our minds. Penned (literally) by artist Karthik Abhiram, the art depicts a montage of imagery showed in the film’s trailer.

For making the drawing, I followed my usual process – I took several screenshots from the trailer and used them as reference,” said Abhiram. “The drawing was done using primarily a black ballpoint pen, but a black marker was also used for solid black areas, and all the blood was done with a red gel pen. A slight touch of blue ballpoint pen is also seen – on the guy with the chainsaw.

After completing the drawing, I scanned it in and then adjusted the contrast in Photoshop Elements. I also overlaid two paper textures (bashcorpo’s texture 5 and 6 – these two are favourites of mine and I’ve used them very often), and then added the logo and the text.

Is ‘Evil Dead’ Actually A Sequel?!

FilmDistrict’s new Evil Dead is one of the most important genre films in the past few years. It’s one that could make or break what kind of movies studios make in the next 5 years. We personally fell in love with the first image and trailer, which is why I’ve been weeding through everything hoping to find a needle in the haystack. Through my morning of screen-grabbing (100 high resolution images coming right up!), I came across something that could be potentially HUGE (but then again, it could be nothing).

As many of you Sam Raimi fanatics know, his 1973 Delta 88 Oldsmobile makes a cameo in all of his films beginning with his 1981 The Evil Dead. In the latest installment, in theaters April 12, 2013, director Fede Alvarez has put the same car in as a prop. This drops a bomb of questions with the two main ones being: is this just an homage, or is this potentially the same vehicle Ash (Bruce Campbell) drove in the original trilogy? This car cameo could actualy mean that the new Evil Dead is a direct sequel to the first film. Could these demons have already feasted on the souls of the characters from the 1981 film? Perhaps it takes place in that universe alone and ignores Evil Dead 2 and Army Of Darkness (if I remember correctly, the car gets sucked in a vortex and goes back in time in those)? And if you look at the below images, the exact same light is smashed!

Am I reading too much into this? Probably. Still, it’s kind of a cool cameo that deserves a look. Check out Jane Levy taking a drag and writing something down atop the 1973 Delta 88 Oldsmobile. READ MORE

10 Things I Learned From The ‘Evil Dead’ Trailer… 55 Screen Grab Images!!

FilmDistrict has read the incantation and resurrected the official trailer premiere for Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, which opens in theaters April 12, 2013!

It’s been an interesting few weeks here on Bloody Disgusting. Since the first image hit, and the trailer leaked out of the New York Comic-Con, we’ve been extremely excited. Unfortunately, not all of you agree. The word “remake” stings quite a bit, especially when you’re talking about Sam Raimi’s cult 1981 The Evil Dead. It definitely leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but, it’s hard to ignore the fact that this film was obviously made for us. With Paramount releasing ultra-safe horror like Paranormal Activity and The Devil Inside, Sony and FilmDistrict are venturing into new territory. From my perspective, they’re dipping their toes into the waters of “dangerous” cinema. Most of us will be in theaters April 12, but will the rest of the country? Evil Dead looks absolutely, fantastically brutal. And that’s cause for some celebration.

Ok, enough filibustering. After watching the first red band trailer, I not only took 55 screen grabs for you guys to dig through (HD grabs forthcoming), but I quickly dissected them into 10 things I learned from the Evil Dead trailer. You’ll find it all inside. READ MORE

Finally!!! The Official Trailer For The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake!!!

We got a shaky, blurry look at Fede Alvarez’s hotly anticipated Evil Dead remake earlier this month. While it was blurry and shaky due to its bootleg nature it revealed one thing – that the film will be supremely gory!!! And now, we have a clear look at the film. Bonus? Still super gory! And it uses the low-roving shots that we all know and love. Despite the more polished look, it feels very much like an Evil Dead movie to me. Specifically the first one, where it was five people and it wasn’t just about Ash!

In the remake starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, Jessica Lucas and Bruce Campbell, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin.
