Matt Damon Fills Up ‘Elysium’ IMAX Poster

In addition to last night’s epic trailer debut, here’s the IMAX one-sheet for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming dystopian epic Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.

In theaters August 9, “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max, an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt and her hard-line forces — but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

Escape the crime, pollution, and misery of Earth. Apply now for a better, happier, more luxurious life. Elysium, it’s better up there.

Don’t Forget About ‘Elysium’ This Summer!

I seriously think some of us need to wake the hell up and pay attention here.

Sure, Pacific Rim and the other big summer movies are taking up all of our ADHS attention spans, but we really shouldn’t be ignoring Elysium, Neill Blomkamp’s follow up to his masterful District 9. In theaters August 9, the chatter around the sci-fi thriller is deafening, which means either the movie looks bad, or the studio needs to boost the film’s awareness. I go with the latter as we desperately need new images and a flippin’ new trailer already. At this point, I’m starting to think Sony’s going to bump it. Although, August is still a few months away, I’m sure the goodies will start exploding out of the gate, and maybe this LA Times photo is just the starting point. Let’s hope because this movie looks and sounds awesome.

Invade The Rich With This ‘Elysium’ Trailer!!!

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming dystopian epic Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, finally has a trailer. It’s been around 9 months since I saw the footage at SDCC, but it was so fun and unique the film hasn’t strayed far from my radar since then. This trailer does a great job of selling the gleaming sci-fi rich vs. the teeming poor masses thing, but it doesn’t really indicate how splattery this movie is (or at least the bits I’ve seen). It is Blomkamp, after all.

[2013 HORROR MOVIE PREVIEW] SONY/SCREEN GEMS/FILM DISTRICT

While Sony and Screen Gems typically pump out the horror, most of the genre films they release fail to deliver. This is because the heft of their releases are franchises that they hope to (and do) cash in on. Not to mention that many of the Screen Gems titles are made for kids, and not hardcore horror fans.

Last year saw another Resident Evil and Underworld, both “fine” by sequel standards, alongside Ghost Rider and Total Recall. There’s four incredibly bland franchise films.

2013 looks promising, though, as the first quarter sees not just Carrie, but also the hotly anticipated Evil Dead reboot; it’s an understatement to say that horror comes out strong next year. In fact, the success of Evil Dead could potentially propel the genre into a new age of dark horror. READ MORE

Another Look At Matt Damon With His Alien Vaporizor In ‘Elysium’

Shrouded in mystery from the get-go, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp pulled together a remarkable cast – including Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Matt Damon, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Alice Braga and Diego Luna – for the top secret sci-fi epic Elysium, which Sony launches into theaters August 9, 2013.

The second still, shared by Screen Crush, is another look at Damon with his alien-vaporizing firepower called the Chemrail.

The movie’s title refers to a space station that, with Earth a ruined , poverty-stricken shell in the year 2154, transports the wealthy serenely in orbit.

[Box Office] Sony Pushes Both ‘Elysium’ and ‘RoboCop’ WAY Back

Sony/TriStar has made a few major dafe shifts moving District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium from March 1, 2013 to August 9, 2013. This can be seen as a vote of confidence in the film, maybe the execs think it can hold its own in the summertime.

In even worse news, Elysium is snatching up RoboCop‘s old slot, which MGM has pushed all the way back to February 7, 2014. This can be seen as the studio almost kind of dumping the film, which is weird since they’re still shooting. Maybe I’m wrong, but this isn’t a great sign for RoboCop.

In Elysium, “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. With RoboCop, director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. Peter Weller played the character in the original and the 1990 sequel.

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] A Taste Of Sony’s ‘Elysium’ Display Takes Flight

While you should expect more imagery this afternoon, here’s a taste of what Sony Pictures has on display for Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Elysium is Blomkamp’s long-awaited story set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film.

In addition, early rumors circulated that the plot will actually follow a battle between an alien and human race for the right to colonize another planet. There are some very relevant political themes hidden within there…

New Quality Looks At ‘Resident Evil: Retribution,’ ‘Pacific Rim,’ ‘Elysium,’ “The Walking Dead,” & ‘Branded’

As mentioned yesterday, the new San Diego Comic-Con issue of EW has hit stands and it’s got a couple of cool looks at some of your most anticipated films from the event. First up is a newly added clean look at Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi suited up for action in Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, opening July 12, 2013.

Next up is the still from Resident Evil: Retribution that puts Alice’s (Milla Jovovich) in the face of a zombie. The battle against Umbrella continues September 14 from Sony Screen Gems.

Also included in the batch of stills are new looks at the third season of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” (returning this October) cast, Sony Pictures and Neill Blomkam’s sci-fi epic Elysium (March 1, 2013) and Roadside Attraction’s Russian thriller Branded (September).

Damon Dons Exoskeleton In ‘Elysium’ Set Pics

Before District 9 came out, Neill Blomkamp was mainly recognized as “that guy who almost made Halo.” Here we are two years later, with one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade under his belt and Elysium undergoing production right now.

With the cast Blomkamp assembled and the amount of goodwill he’s built up, I imagine a lot of crew members and “passersby” will conveniently have cameras on them, especially since the plot is still vague and hush-hush. Case in point: these photos of a bald and bloodied Matt Damon wearing an exoskeletal apparatus of some sort.

Not much is known about the film, other than it being set in the far future on another planet where it’s rumored that humans and aliens are battling for the right to colonize, so it’s hard to guess what’s going on in these pics. The gear looks like it might be a brace or life support system (they are colonizing another planet…), or maybe it’s the remnants of a bigger suit that was damaged in battle. Whatever it is, we’ll find out on March 01, 2013.

Comic-Con ’11: ‘Elysium’ Viral Building a Better Future

The one great thing about the growing popularity of the San Diego Comic-Con is that studios are pushing even harder on viral marketing campaigns. Comingsoon snapped a photo of a recruitment poster that ended up being courtesy of Sony Pictures for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s mysterious Elysium, which stars Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Matt Damon, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Alice Braga and Diego Luna.

The viral poster leads you to Armadyne’s website that carries the below video seeking “zero g welders, mega-structure engineers [and] quantum networkers.” They also speak of “zero g coupling and multi-generational planning” for a project they hope to complete by 2097. The company is building a better world, with you. If anything, this promo viral reminds me of the T:3D ride at Universal Studios where Cyberdyne talks about their revolutionary future.

Now filming, Elysium will hit theaters on March 1, 2013.

News Bites: Diablo Cody Pens ‘Evil Dead,’ ‘Underworld’s ‘Awakening,’ ‘Undocumented’ Acquired & ‘Elysium’ Becomes ‘Baja Dunes’

I spent the afternoon getting treatment for my horrible, horrible TMJ (sympathy, please) so in an attempt to catch up on the news briefs, here’s a special edition of News Bites:

As previously mentioned, Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) is currently rewriting Federico Alvarez’s recent draft of The Evil Dead, which Alvarez will direct some time in 2012.

IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights to director Chris Peckover’s feature debut Undocumented, a truly dark thriller that’s heavy on the politcs and light on the horror, reports Variety. It’s a prety great film that premiered at Fantastic Fest last year. Peckover wrote the script with Joe Peterson. Scott Mechlowicz, Alona Tal, Yancey Arias, Greg Serano and Kevin Weisman star. It “centers on a group of documentary filmmakers chronicling the trials and inequities faced by Mexican illegal immigrants. When they join a group of families illegally crossing the border to record the experience firsthand, their truck is pulled over and detained — and what happens next plunges their group into unimaginable horror.

MTV has renewed “Teen Wolf” for a second season of 12 episodes to air in 2012, reports Variety. “Teen Wolf” premiered June 5 and through its seven episodes has been MTV’s highest-rated new series of the past two years in the 12-34 demo, averaging 1.7 million overall viewers. The series has been TV’s No. 4 show among auds 12-34.

A recent issue of Production Weekly claims that Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is now titled Baja Dunes, although, as Latino Review smartly assesses, could be a title cover up for production purposes. The story revolves around aliens doing battle with humans on Earth. The film’s cast already includes Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Wagner Moura and Diego Luna. It’ll arirve in theaters March 1, 2013 from Sony.

Speaking of title changes, Sony Screen Gems has decided on Underworld Awakening for Selene’s fourth battle with the Lycans. Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, and starring Kate Beckinsale, India Eisley and Michael Ealy, Screen Gems will continue the tradition of a New Year’s release on January 20, 2012.

Lastly, Warners The Seventh Son, starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander, will arrive in theaters February 15, 2013. An exorcism tale on Valentine’s Day? Aces! Sergei Bodrov directed the big screen adaptation of “The Last Apprentice.”
