[DVD Review] 'This Is The End' Pushes Beyond An Apocalyptic Comedy

It’s a well known fact that I adore Seth Rogen. It is also well known that I think he and Evan Goldberg are geniuses. It should not then come as a shock that I think This Is the End is amazing.

More or less everything about this horror comedy starring Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson, is funny. There is wonderful chemistry with the group which makes this entire situation – it’s the end of the world and these guys are stuck in Franco’s house with only a ration of food, etc – plausible. Then there are elements of the film that kick it up to a different level, like making Michael Cera a drugged up, womanizing version of himself and making Jonah Hill a terribly positive, sensitive soul. That latter bit is what makes the biggest horror homage of this movie even more grand than it is. In tribute to first Rosemary’s Baby, then The Exorcist, This Is the End goes above and beyond what Superbad and Pineapple Express laid out as comedy and pushes it beyond the apocalyptic realm it tries to remain in and makes it a legitimate installment to the horror genre. Plus, Emma Watson shows up crazed, as seen in the trailer, and who doesn’t want to see Hermione cussing? Really. READ MORE

Potential 'This Is the End' Sequel Would Start During the FIlm's Premiere!

Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, the duo behind Superbad and Pineapple Express, were in London this week to promote their new comedy, This Is the End (read my review), which is released in the UK by Sony this weekend.

With the $31m-budgeted spoof about six friends facing the apocalypse having grossed $57.8m after two weeks in the US, ScreenDaily asked Goldberg about the prospect of a sequel.

If you ask me, I’d say there’s a good chance of sequel,” said Goldberg, who co-directed the comedy with Rogan. “If you ask Seth, he’d say no. So, we’ll see.

Real-life friends James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson star as the six friends fending off the apocalypse, while there are cameos from the likes of Rihanna, Emma Watson, the Backstreet Boys, Channing Tatum and Paul Rudd. READ MORE

Seth Rogen And Evan Goldberg Wanted Morgan Freeman For God In 'This Is The End'

Sony’s This Is the End, the new apocalypse comedy directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is f*cking hilarious and utterly surprising. I’m going to to my best to relay this without spoiling anything for you regarding the film – but nevertheless you might want to WAIT to read this until you’ve seen the movie.

Vulture has a neat little story about what almost happened at the end of the film. Apparently they wanted Morgan Freeman to play God, or at least use his gravitas to psych out the characters. Goldberg says “The whole joke was, he shows up, and he’s like, ‘I’m God.’ And they’re like, ‘You’re God?’ And Jay [Baruchel] goes, ‘Wait, so when we were in Million Dollar Baby together, were you God then? I don’t get it.’ And then God shows up and he’s like, ‘We’re just fucking with you. This is Morgan Freeman. We just play this joke on people when they come to heaven now. Do you guys want to get high and play some video games?‘” But Freeman wasn’t game, “he rejected us for some crazy reason,” says Goldberg.

What does actually happen at the end? If you don’t know, head to theaters immediately to check out this instant classic. READ MORE

[BD Review "Editor's Choice"] 'This Is the End' Is An Insanely Funny Horror Gem!

Sony Pictures doesn’t want you to know this is a horror comedy. Why? Because horror and comedy don’t mix, and they don’t sell. But I assure you, dear readers, that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s This Is the End, in theaters June 12, is easily the best combo genre film since James Gunn’s SLiTHER. While it’s funny as all hell, End is absolutely loaded with horror gags, blissful violence, and super scary demons. I’m high on this horror masterpiece, so much so that it’s the first this year to receive the “Editor’s Choice” seal of approval here on Bloody Disgusting (the first two to receive were Stitches and Maniac, respectively).

Starring Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Aziz Ansari, Emma Watson, Jason Segel, David Krumholtz, Michael Cera and Rihanna all as themselves, I guarantee you’re going to love this super meta, badass comedy.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg directed the living shit out of their screenplay. It’s rare to see a genre crossover like this, but Rogen and Goldberg stunned me with their understanding of the horror genre, the beats, and how to scare the audience,” I state in my review. “While This Is the End may be a comedy – one of the funniest this decade – it’s still an insanely competent horror movie that’s going to blow your collective minds.

[BD Review] 'This Is the End' the Best Horror Comedy Since 'Slither'!

The best kind of comedies are based on self-deprecation. There’s nothing funnier than someone being able to poke fun at themselves, which is why so many standup comedians are great at what they do. In film, many writers and directors think the best way into an audience’s heart is through slapstick and prop gags – a cheap way to obtain laughs without doing any actual work (ie; a character tripping over a chair and falling face first into a cake). Because that route is (unfortunately) box office dynamite, it’s incredibly rare when we are gifted with an authentic comedy that’s built around great plotting, characters and payoffs.

This Is the End, which is a horror comedy (don’t let the advertising fool you), is without a shadow of doubt the funniest movie to hit theaters since Superbad or The Hangover.

In one of the most ingenious, brilliant and clever plots, This Is the End features the comedy best friends club of Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Aziz Ansari, and Emma Watson all playing themselves. This takes self-deprecation to an entirely new level as each and every of the aforementioned cast jab each other in a roast-styled comedy that’s jam-packed with gut-busting laughs.

Baruchel, a recluse who likes to play video games, eat burgers and smoke weed, is visiting Rogen from Montreal. He hates the Hollywood lifestyle, yet is convinced by Rogen to go to Franco’s housewarming party. They arrive to a starfucker extravaganza that includes bizarre moments like Robinson singing about panties alongside Rihanna, and Michael Cerra doing lines of coke and getting double-teamed in a bathroom while drinking juice packs. The internal conflict is that Baruchel hates the scene and feels like Rogen is a traitor who’s become one of “them.” Bickering ensues. During a trip to the store for smokes, a major earthquake erupts and residents are all blasted to the sky in a blue beam of light. It’s the apocalypse and the rapture is upon them.

Back at Franco’s, shit gets crazy as half the party is decimated in a sink hole, while the survivors are holed up with a psychopath (played by McBride) completely messing up the chemistry. Extreme comedy ensues.

But this is a horror website, so let’s cut the shit. This Is the End is the best horror comedy since James Gunn’s SLiTHER. The studio can hide it as much as they want, but you’ll get heavy doses of gore and extreme violence, not to mention exorcisms, demons and the mother fuckin’ Devil himself.

While most of the movie takes place inside the interior of Franco’s ridiculous new pad, the visual scope of the film is stunning as we see the Hollywood hills completely engulfed in flames, helicopters crashing, and a large-scale battle with a massive beast. The visual effects, which include the demons and Satan, look absolutely incredible.

Outside of a few messy transitions and some pacing lulls, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg directed the living shit out of their screenplay. It’s rare to see a genre crossover like this, but Rogen and Goldberg stunned me with their understanding of the horror genre, the beats, and how to scare the audience. While This Is the End may be a comedy – one of the funniest this decade – it’s still an insanely competent horror movie that’s going to blow your collective minds.

Confirmed: Guillermo del Toro Directing 'Beauty and the Beast'

Another odd project I don’t know if we should be reporting on is the super vague adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, which Variety reports will now be directed by Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro has yet to venture out of the “dark side” (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Blade 2, Mimic, The Devil’s Backbone), which makes me believe this will also be a chilling take on the classic story.

Warner Bros. has tapped Bridget Jones’s Diary scribe Andrew Davies to write Beauty and the Beast, which also has Harry Potter star Emma Watson in final negotiations to topline the period pic. I can only assume she’ll be playing the beast?

It should also be noted that Del Toro is working on Pacific Rim, and attached his name to more than a handful of projects. Don’t be surprised if this curse is never lifted. Del Toro will write a treatment that Davies will then work off of. READ MORE

Dimension Plans Thanksgiving Horror 'Kristy' With 'Harry Potter' Starlette

Bloody Disgusting got exclusive word that the Weinstein Company may actually get the long-gestured Kristy off the ground.

We’ve been tipped off that Gary Fleder (Kiss the Girls, Don’t Say a Word ) is now in the director’s chair with a shoot date slated for this coming April. Penned by Tony Jaswinski, the slasher is being pegged as The Strangers on a college campus. It follows a college coed who stays in her dorm during Thanksgiving and is terrorized by four masked assailants on the empty campus — the killers are up against far more than they bargained for.

The Weinstein Company hopes to land Harry Potter star Emma Watson in the lead role of “Justine”, although talks have yet to get underway.

Project #357826472 On Del Toro's Slate: 'Beauty and the Beast'

Genre veteran Guillermo del Toro has been using a fairy tale approach to his films – both aesthetically and story-wise – for years, so the latest project he’s attached himself to isn’t really a shock; he’s already made Alice in Wonderland via Pan’s Labyrinth, recreated Peter Pan vicariously through Juan Antonio Bayona in The Orphanage and is producing Gris Grimley’s stop-motion Pinocchio. According to producer Denise Di Novi, it looks like the man-with-a-bazillion-projects is now developing an adaptation of Beauty And The Beast, with Harry Potter‘s Emma Watson set to star, reports Comingsoon. Maybe he can get Ron Perlman to play The Beast one more time?

Beastly, a modern-day take on the tale, hit theatres earlier this year and managed to make back its production budget but wasn’t exactly an explosive hit. Still, with a powerhouse like del Toro behind it who has an affinity for this sort of material, it’s almost guaranteed to be a neat project. That is, if he ever gets around to it.
