After years of gestation, artist-turned-director Tim Burton is finally behind the camera for his adaptation of the British soap opera Dark Shadows, which heads a mighty cast. During an interview with TheWrap he explained that they’ve already begun filming some intensive footage while also really delving into the film’s “tone.”
“It’s been hard to kind of come here because I’m just starting, and it’s a weird tone and it’s a lot of actors and, you know, we’re not starting with the simple stuff; we’re sort of getting right in there. You like to kind of sneak up on it a little bit, but this one we just kind of slammed right into it, he explains also talking a bit about the soap opera qualities. “Yes, I don’t know. I’m early into it because it’s a funny tone, and that’s part of what the vibe of the show is, and there’s something about it that we want to get. But when you look at it, it’s pretty bad. I’m hoping that it will be — it’s early days, let’s put it — I’m very intrigued by the tone. It’s a real ethereal tone we’re trying to go for and I don’t know yet.”
He also confirms that Warners pic starring Johnny Depp, Jackie Earle Haley, Bella Heathcote, Cloe Moretz, Eva Green and Michelle Pfeiffer is NOT being shot in 3-D for its May 11, 2012 release.
Over the past year we’ve been talking nonstop about Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, an adaptation of the highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. Even through all of the delays, rumors and casting announcements, story details have been completely vacant.
This morning it was announced that filming begins this week on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ adaptation, which finally reveals the pic’s plot details. The film’s all-star ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.
Tim Burton has set Gulliver McGrath (The Loved Ones) to play the role of David Collins in Dark Shadows. It was a coveted role on the pint-sized set, with Burton still setting his sights on Michael Sheen to play his father, Roger Collins, reports Deadline.
Johnny Deep heads a cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Bella Heathcoate, Jackie Earle Haley and Eva Green, with Helena Bonham Carter also expected to join. Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script that follows the life of vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Depp, and his run-ins with various monsters, ghosts, and supernatural creatures.
It’s rare when Tim Burton works outside of his comfort zone, which is why it comes as no surprise that Michelle Pfeiffer is in negotiations to reteam with Tim Burton for Dark Shadows, Warner Bros’ big-screen take on the 1960s gothic vampire TV soap opera starring Johnny Depp. Helena Bonham Carter is also in talks (there’s a shocker).
The movie has an April start and has been casting up, with Jackie Earle Haley, Eva Green and Bella Heatcote already on board.
Depp will portray Barnabas Collins, a self-loathing vampire living in a Maine manor who is searching for his lost love.
Pfeiffer would play Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the reclusive matriarch of the Collins family which runs the Maine town. The character has not left the mansion since the disappearance of her husband a decade earlier. The last time she worked with Burton was in 1992′s Batman Returns where she memorably played Catwoman.
Warner Bros. isn’t playing around. They’re moving rapidly on getting Tim Burton’s bigscreen adaptation of the 1960s supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows cast up and behind cameras.
Yesterday it became known that Jackie Earle Haley and Bella Heathcoate are in talks for lead roles in the film alongside previously committed Johnny Depp.
Deadline adds that Eva Green (Casino Royale) has officially landed the female lead “Angelique”. In the series, she was a powerful witch who was alternately tormented and bewitched by her love-hate relationship with Barnabas Collins (Depp). The original followed the life of vampire Collins, and his run-ins with various monsters, ghosts, and supernatural creatures.
