Winners will be announced daily from March 25th – April 5th (weekends excluded). And well, April 5th is today. Again, it’s kind of a bummer because this has actually been very rewarding for me. It’s a lot of fun to share these creations with the world and make true horror fans happy.

Today’s winner is Jay Woodley (along with Danielle Skelley for putting up with it)! I got a lot of Evil Dead cosplay pics but I think this was my favorite. In Jay’s (brief) words, “Hey guys! here is the costume i made a few years back. with REAL homelite xl chainsaw. Enjoy!

Be sure to check back Monday to see who we announce as the grand prize winner! Whoever they are will receive POSTER SIGNED BY THE CAST AND CREW of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake – in theaters today!

Winners will be announced daily from March 25th – April 5th (weekends excluded). Submissions will be open the whole time, so if you see something you think you can top… TOP IT!

Today’s winner is Dennis Carter Jr.! He has an amazing, HUGE collection of Evil Dead memorabilia. Much of it official. I’ve included 17 images – but would you believe I had to pare that down? I think I got dozens more! In his own words, “My collection consists of actual movie props, replicas, toys, books, promo items, CD’s, photos, and collectables. Some of the highlights of my collection are:

1: The only surviving movie prop of Ash’s possessed hand from Evil Dead 2. There were two that were made for the stop motion sequences. One was destroyed years ago. This one is the only one that survived. 2: One of the Lost Pages of the necronomicon from Evil Dead 2 showing the Winged Deadite. This one was used during filming and has some of the fake blood used on the actors on it. 3: A production made but unused Winged Deadite head from the Winged Deadite in Evil Dead 2. It was made and painted by one of the people who worked on the film.

I actually have to stop it there and include his full list of “highlights” below the photo gallery iside because it’s so long.
Remember there are still TWO winners left to announce this week – and today is the last day to enter! Head inside to check out Carter’s AMAZING collection! READ MORE

[Video Interview] Fede Alvarez And Jane Levy On The Physical Punishment In ‘Evil Dead’ And What’s Ahead In ‘Evil Dead 2′!!

The new Evil Dead hits theaters this Friday, April 5th, but you already know my thoughts on it. If you’re a horror fan, it’s something you don’t want to miss. It hits a few bumps in the beginning – but once it gets going the film just flies along and it’s a gory, glorious blast (my review here)! To that end, I recently sat down with writer/director Fede Alvarez and his star Jane Levy to talk about the rigors of a shoot soaked in practical effects. We also touch upon the potential plans for the upcoming sequel.

In the film, “In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead. An archaeologist’s tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization. Playing the taped incantations, the youths unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.” Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, and Jessica Lucas also star.

As We Suspected, ‘Evil Dead’ Is A Sequel That Eventually Leads To Major Crossover In ‘Evil Dead 7′!!

Director Fede Alvarez dropped a bomb on WonderCon audiences during an Evil Dead panel this Sunday in the Anaheim convention center n California.

Back when the red band trailer had been released, We had pointed out some interesting imagery that suggested that maybe the new Evil Dead, in theaters April 5, was actually a sequel. Alvarez confirmed this to the WonderCon crowd, while also adding something major.

He told audiences that an Evil Dead 2 (followed by a planned Evil Dead 3), and the recently announced Army of Darkness 2, will eventually crossover for the ultimate cult horror movie Evil Dead 7, reports Movieweb. So, after two sequels to the current remake – the remake universe will collide with the old “Ash” universe in a film that will amount to be the 4th installment in both franchises.

At this time, Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi are working on the screenplay for Army of Darkness 2, which will continue the story of Ash as seen in the original The Evil Dead from 1981. While Fede Alvarez might have been joking, suggests the site, who was on hand for the panel, he seemed serious when he said he plans to join both his new franchise together with Sam Raimi’s old franchise.

Hail the king, baby. READ MORE

Today’s winner is Laz Marquez!. He writes in with pretty great new poster for Fede Alvarez’s upcoming remake! In his words, “I wanted to capture the iconic elements of the film while focusing on the horror one would feel by being overcome by an entity outside of themselves. The image of a fearful eye, crying, with the iris/logo overtaking that was something I wanted to come through. The cabin was always secondary to me, as the design implies. It was always the violation of the deadites onto another person that intrigued me. ” You can check out more of his work here!

It’s a retelling of the original Evil Dead (with a visual nod to the remake) in 60 seconds. Per Bramley, “‘d like to submit our recreation of the original Evil Dead done in 60 seconds for the Deadite of the Day contest. Created by myself (Luke Bramley), Gigi Saul Guerrero, and Raynor Shima (with the help of our fantastic cast and crew), we submitted this to the Virgin Radio Fake Film Festival, and although we didn’t win 1st place, we came in the top 5 and received a lot of positive feedback from Evil Dead fans everywhere.

Submissions will be open the whole time, so if you see something you think you can top… TOP IT!

Today’s winner is Theodore Holmstead-Scott, who is only 15 years old. He runs The House Of Marrow blog and has made a cool short, The Woods Themselves, expressly for this contest. In his own words, “I first saw the Evil Dead films around this time last year and immediately fell in love with them. When I saw the contest post on your site I immediately set to work. I built the prop (an ancient victim of the ‘angry molesting trees’) over the last week and filmed it in the woods on the weekend – it was pretty exhausting, but absolutely worth it. ‘The Evil Dead’ is one of my most favorite films, and also one that inspired me to get into filmmaking.

I really dig how Theodore’s short uses that low-roving camera angle, and that jump over the fallen tree near the end is what sealed the deal for me. That one moment captures the playful vibe of the original trilogy so well. Sadly, Theodore hails from Wellington, New Zealand. So if he wants to be eligible for the signed poster he needs to have someone in the US it can be mailed to. Though – again – we still have 8 more winners to announce who are also eligible. I figured I’d start this off with a bang and announce a winner with one of the most extensive collections of anything I’ve ever seen! His name is Sean Gooding (@GonzoSean on Twitter) and he also runs the site Deadites Online. In his own words, “Up until a few years ago I owned a very large Evil Dead Collection, these pictures were from the height of my collecting days, I still own the full Scale replica of Ash’s chainsaw from Evil Dead 2 and some boxed figures and Blu Rays.” He also included a sketch of Ash that he did that’s pretty badass too.

Sadly, Sean hails from the UK. So if he wants to be eligible for the signed poster he needs to have someone in the US it can be mailed to. Hopefully he does! 5 Favorite Moments From ‘Army Of Darkness’!!!

If you looked at my Evil Dead Month Rankings, you’ll notice that Army Of Darkness came in last. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t love it! I recently watched the film again (which still loses me at that damn windmill scene) and the stuff that works for me works just as well as it ever did. So in the spirit of Evil Dead Month, I figured I’d catalogue what worked for me (like I did in my 5 Favorite Moments From Evil Dead 2 piece).

As I said in the rankings, “While Army Of Darkness regains its footing towards the end with its massive battle, it never fully learns how to make the medieval setting engage Ash in an interesting way beyond its initial “fish out of water” conceit. Again, I’m not slamming the movie. I’m just saying that what starts out as an “A+” effort eventually ends up as more of a “B-”.”

Let’s find out what those A+ scenes are! Head inside for my 5 Favorite Moments From ‘Army Of Darkness’!!! READ MORE

['Evil Dead' Month] Meet The Deadites!

One of The Evil Dead series’ greatest assets is its host of Deadites, possessed humans who want nothing more than to possess more humans through vague, ever changing means. Some are humanoid, some are monstrous, some are trees, and some are goats. But all of them are awesome. And while they don’t make much sense and lack consistency even within individual films, we love them all the same. Especially the goat. Here is our rundown of Deadites from the entire Evil Dead series, excluding all videogames, comic books, and fan fiction. But including Drag Me to Hell because c’mon.

[SXSW '13 Exclusive] Writer Rodo Sayagues On The Potential Sequel To ‘Evil Dead’! Also, Find Out Where You Can See The Movie Early!

FilmDistrict and TriStar’s Evil Dead just premiered last night at SXSW, and to say I enjoyed the film would be an understatement (review here). I just conducted an interview with the film’s co-writer Rodo Sayagues. While I’ll be sharing the entire interview later this week, I figured I’d go ahead and pop up some quick info on the sequel he is currently writing with Fede Alvarez.

In the new rebirth, “In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.” Directed by Fede Alvarez, the R-rated remake stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas.

Breaking: Fede Alvarez Begins Work On ‘Evil Dead’ Sequel!

The past week all we’ve talked about is Sam Raimi writing Evil Dead 4, but now we’re shifting gears back to the rebooted franchise.

While the TriStar and FilmDistrict remake doesn’t hit theaters until April 5, director Fede Alvarez revealed to a sold out SXSW crowd that he’s already begun writing a sequel to his Evil Dead, starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas.

The film just World Premiered at the film festival in Austin, Texas, as we’ve been retweeting all of the reactions as they come in. Negative reactions? Don’t see any, yet.

So, with Fede penning an Evil Dead sequel, and Raimi working on Evil Dead 4 with his brother Ivan, could these worlds end up colliding? That thought just blew my mind. READ MORE

5 Favorite Moments From ‘Evil Dead 2′!!!

Evil Dead 2 is my favorite Evil Dead film (a ranking I’m open to changing after I see the remake on Friday). It’s almost strange that it works so well for me. I love great dialogue, but there’s relatively little of it to be found in the movie (aside from its iconic one-liners). I love rich characters, and the film doesn’t seem particularly interested in defining those specifics. I love a tight narrative, and Evil Dead 2 isn’t so much a story as it is a series of moments that work exceedingly well together.

I really mean that last part as a compliment, both about the moments and about the film working. Evil Dead 2 breaks so many rules, yet it sings remarkably in spite of that. It’s cinematic and jokey in all the right ways, an epic and gory “Three Stooges” homage.

[Random Cool] Check Out A Modern Day Trailer For Sam Raimi’s ‘Evil Dead’ Films!

Keeping up with our Evil Dead Month here on Bloody Disgusting, YouTube user “Badideaonline” has shared a brilliant fan-made trailer for Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead trilogy.

What you’ll see below is a trailer that takes footage from both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, and then re-imagines it as if it were edited by today’s standards. It’s flashy, spoiler-heavy, and slams a bunch of preachy text across the screen. It’s amazing.

The ‘Evil Dead’ Films Ranked From Best To Worst!!!

I wanted to start Evil Dead Month off with a bang and I figured there’d be no better way to do that than to lay my cards out on the table and rank the films in my order of preference. And I’ll say it – I fully expect some of you to hate me after this, because I make one choice that I’m sure 99% of you won’t be down with.

But it all comes from a place of love. You see, I legitimately love this series and this includes the “weaker” installments as well. When I first saw Army Of Darkness in theaters, I had no idea that it was part of a franchise (let alone the one whose Evil Dead 2 print ad scared the hell out of me whenever I opened the paper in grade school). I just went because the TV ads looked cool, and I suppose I should thank the guy at the box office now – because there’s no way my friends and I looked old enough to get in.

Needless to say we loved Army, put two and two together that it was a sequel, and rented Evil Dead 2. That was a revelation. It was like the movies we were trying to make in our backyards, full of energy, weird camera shots and an idiosyncratic tone all its own. The only difference? Evil Dead 2 was amazing and our movies were terrible! Still, I remember the high that I got from watching it. That film connected with me on a level that few films had up until that pint.

So, with that bit of history and context, head inside for my Evil Dead Rankings!!! READ MORE

[Announcement] March Is ‘Evil Dead’ Month On Bloody-Disgusting!!!

We’ve been planning this for a while now and the entire Bloody-Disgusting team is incredibly excited to announce that March is EVIL DEAD MONTH here at the site! We know most of you are incredibly stoked for the upcoming remake from director Fede Alvarez (and producers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell), and so are we – it looks amazing! We plan on having a review when it plays next week at SXSW a full month ahead of its April 5th release date – along with exclusive interviews with the cast and crew – in addition to all of the other insanely cool stuff we have planned.

But Evil Dead Month isn’t just just about the remake. In fact, I’d wager that most of the material you’re going to see here during the next month will focus on the original films (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army Of Darkness). As a team we’ll be talking about our favorite moments from them, why they work, what their key differences are and the overarching mythology of the franchise. Not only that, but you’ll be getting plenty of [Random Cool] installments featuring long forgotten artifacts from the Evil Dead era of the 80′s. Not enough for you? How about revisits to the old video games and soundtracks? Yeah, we’re doing everything.

Also, we’ll be running a “Deadite Of The Day” contest. We’ll make a more formal post in the coming weeks with all of the rules and regulations, but get your fan art, pictures of your Evil Dead trophies or even original YouTube videos ready. Whatever makes you a true deadite, really. We’ll feature a winner every weekday from March 25th – April 7th.

In the meantime, get ready for all of your Evil Dead needs to be met. The first piece drops in just a few minutes!

10 Amazing Horror Comedies!!!

Horror Comedies are by far the most difficult horror sub-genre to execute. They’re also the most likely to fail commercially. While they’re one of my favorite sub genres and I wish there were more of them, when you combine those factors it’s a miracle there aren’t even less.

And many of them are quite great! So much so that I had to strip all numbers and rankings out of this list. While I certainly like some more than others, when you get down to stuff like Gremlins and An American Werewolf In London you’re dealing with grade A classics to which assigning a number would be an insult.

Also, please note that while I love The Cabin In The Woods and Scream, I don’t consider them “comedies.” They’re both intentionally funny, but I feel like their laughs exist to provoke a very specific conversation about horror tropes, which is its own thing.

So, in no particular order, head inside for my Top 10 Horror Comedies! READ MORE

[Editorial] The Wolfman Takes On Remakes!!

By The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards).

You’re sitting there in the movie theater with your Junior Mints, or in the case of psychopaths, sitting there with Dots, waiting for the movie to start. You have a terrifying debate with yourself for ten seconds while you try to determine whether the lights in the theater are actually dimming or maybe you’re having a stroke. Once that bright green screen pops up, proving that your brain does indeed have enough oxygen, you catch a glimpse of some of Hollywood’s newest garbage. Between romantic comedies and animated adventures starring pop singers, it all looks like the same old stuff. Unexpectedly, a trailer pops up that seems to be pretty creepy, have some decent actors in it, and the credits tell you it’s from people who helped make other horror movies that you absolutely love. When the title is revealed, the entire audience groans, followed by nudging the person next to you and saying, “Can you believe they’re even making that movie?” Or maybe you went to this movie alone and angrily took out your phone to post your disdain on Twitter for everyone (read: not really anyone) to see. No folks, the title didn’t reveal that the trailer you just enjoyed was an M. Night Shyamalan joint, but instead, the movie is a remake, adaptation of, or sequel to something else. No matter what the source material is, nothing seems to cause fanboys to angrily roll their eyes more then finding out their favorite movie/book is getting a remake/adaptation/sequel. My advice to all of you is to quit your complaining about something you had absolutely no involvement in making and should focus your energy on revisiting the source material.

[Special Report] The Set Of ‘Evil Dead’ Is Violent, Chaotic And Bloody As Hell… PART TWO!

Last summer I spent two days in Auckland, New Zealand to check out the set of TriStar and FilmDistrict’s upcoming Evil Dead remake. I’m not going to mince words here, I have never walked away from a set this confident and hopeful that a movie will turn out well. With a lot of these visits you get the feeling that people are just fort of putting on their best face to meet you, and you’re not entirely convinced of their commitment to making a great movie.

Not here. Fede Alvarez is not f*cking around. Neither is producer Rob Tapert. Nor are Robert Gillies (the production designer) or Roger Murray (the prosthetics and props maker). The film’s DP, Aaron Morton, isn’t f*cking around either when it comes to getting those crazy roving tree shots we love so much. And the cast? Enduring all of the prosthetics, pain and hundreds of gallons of blood? Not f*cking around.

I’m not talking about a bunch of disinterested dilettantes talking about “how much they love the project.” I’m talking about seeing the bloody proof of it firsthand. I’m not just talking about the scenes we witnessed, but the messy aftermath of everything they’d been shooting up until that point. You just can’t fake a production like this for two days while press is around.

Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Elizabeth Blackmore, Lou Taylor Pucci and Jessica Lucas star in the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film. It hits theaters on April 12th, 2013. Be sure to read PART ONE of our set visit FIRST and then head inside for PART TWOREAD MORE

11 Alternate Horror Posters That Will Blow Your Mind!!

Movie posters seem to be a dying art these days. One of the reasons we get so excited over a good one is because it’s almost as rare as seeing a unicorn. While boutique companies like Mondo regularly craft amazing and passionate one-sheets, it’s a business that the studios themselves rarely engage in anymore. I mean, Drew Struzan is still around, don’t you guys think he should be working more? As far as horror posters go, the 70′s and 80′s were obviously the halcyon days.

And that’s not only in the US! Earlier today Lonmonster stumbled across a ton of 80′s horror movie posters from Thailand (via Monster Brains)! And they’re amazing! They’re like the classic 80′s US posters but go the extra mile that takes them totally over the top! If you’ve ever wanted to see insane one-sheets for Evil Dead, Scanners, Total Recall, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Evil Dead 2, The Amityville Horror, Return Of The Living Dead, Day Of The Dead, They Live and more… you’re in luck!
