Take The Expanded Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! How Do You Rank Now?

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! So in addition to your ranking, let us know which films should make the cut! Should newer fan favorites like Frozen or The Devil’s Rejects be included? Should we go back and pick up a few more old-school slashers? You’re shaping the Final 20! Discuss and vote and I’ll tally it up!

There are now 81 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into!

1-10 Points: Soccer Mom

11-20 Points: Mildly Adventurous

21-30 Points: Casual Fan

31-40 Points: Enthusiast

41-50 Points: Hardcore

51-60 Points: Unstable

61-70 Points: Need Meds

Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! There are 61 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into. You can give us your specific count in the comments or yell at us for the films we’ve left out!! The categories are:

1-10 Points: Soccer Mom

11-20 Points: Mildly Adventurous

21-30 Points: Casual Fan

31-40 Points: Hardcore

41-50 Points: Unstable

[SDCC '12] NECA Exclusives: Sky Ash & Cloaked City Hunter Predator!

Picture 16 [SDCC 12] NECA Exclusives: Sky Ash & Cloaked City Hunter Predator!

NECA announced a limited edition “Ash” action figure for this July’s San Diego Comic Con: “Hard to believe, but it’s been 25 years since director Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2 was released. One of the best cult horror films of all time, it introduced us to the Deadites, the Necronomicon, and most of all, to Bruce Campbell’s character, Ash, the wise-crackin’ S-Mart employee who saws off his own hand and replaces it with a chainsaw. He’s one of our all-time favorite cinematic heroes. How could he not be? Who wouldn’t love that face?

Hero from the Sky Ash captures the young Mr. Campbell as he was at the end of the film. Bloodied, haggard, confused, having killed his girlfriend and a Deadite version of himself, terrified and mysteriously transported through time, Ash emerged in what would become the setting for Army of Darkness and was faced with a whole new round of Deadites to re-kill.

We’ve done Ash before in a series of Evil Dead 2 7″ action figures, but Hero from the Sky Ash — aside from being SDCC exclusive — perfectly captures one of the most important moments in Evil Dead 2. A sepia-toned paint job brings out not just nostalgia for the 25th Anniversary of Evil Dead 2 but also the desert Ash found himself (and his car, oddly enough) transported to. Just look at the surprise on that face.

But Ash here is more than just a great chin! Check out our Hero from the Sky’s full articulation below!” There’s also info on another SDCC exclusive, the “Cloaked City Hunter Predator“. READ MORE

Who Here Has Actually Seen ‘The Evil Dead’? It’s A Horror Movie! And It’s Not All About Ash!

EvilLand22712 Who Here Has Actually Seen The Evil Dead? Its A Horror Movie! And Its Not All About Ash!

A couple weeks ago, the stars of the upcoming The Evil Dead remake commented on the tone of the film they’re about to shoot. It seemed to catch a lot of people off guard. Not our piece necessarily, but the fact that the talent involved (along with Bruce Campbell) were talking about a “seriously scary” movie seemed to flummox people.

Another aspect of the upcoming remake that has some people seriously freaking out? No Ash. No Ashley J. Williams. No Bruce Campbell. No Chin. Now, I love Bruce Campbell. I’ve seen Evil Dead 2 literally dozens of times. Which is why I think it’s a good thing he’s not in this movie.

You may think you want Ash in the remake too. But you don’t. Not really. Why? Because it’s a remake of The Evil Dead. Not Evil Dead 2. And there’s a huge difference.

Ash is not the embodiment of the original film. And humor’s not really a huge component either.

[Toys] Meet A Burly Ash In Previously Unannounced ‘Evil Dead 2′ Figure!

[Toys] Meet A Burly Ash In Previously Unannounced Evil Dead 2 Figure!

We missed something this “Ash” Wednesday when NECA took to Twitter to reveal an unannounced, previously top-secret action figure from the forthcoming Evil Dead 2 line.

Apparently, the toy company has been hard at work on a “Sepia tone” Ash chainsaw figurine. He rocks his trusty “boomstick”, chainsaw and streak of white hair (oh, the horror!). He comes standing on a pretty sweet base, too.

NECA didn’t reveal the release date for the figure, so it’s unclear if it will be a series 1 or 2 varient. Either way it’s a must-have. We teased series 2 out of Toy Fair earlier this month, with full details on the soon-to-be-released series 1 here. READ MORE

[Toy Fair '12] Ash Gets His Chainsaw In ‘Evil Dead 2′ Prototype

[Toy Fair 12] Ash Gets His Chainsaw In Evil Dead 2 Prototype

While you’ve already seen Deadite Ash and Shotgun Ash from NECA’s Evil Dead 2 line about 100 times over now (it should be in stores any day now), the toy company has revealed a new look at Henrietta and a prototype of Evil Dead 2 Chainsaw Ash.

Henrietta comes with interchangeable demon head (perfect to lop off), while Chainsaw Ash comes with a laughing deer head accessory. You can read about the first two Ash figures in our previous story from December. There are so many other characters that can easily make the cut; I’d love to see Henrietta in the cellar as a box set. READ MORE

Toys: NECA Announces First Batch of ‘Evil Dead 2′ Toys

I stopped buying toys a long time ago, there just isn’t enough space in my house for all of them. Unfortunately, NECA is going to cause me a lot of problems with their forthcoming Evil Dead 2 line that’s already been teased at the previous two Comic-Cons in CA and NY.

This weekend NECA revealed that the first line will hit stores this February and will consist of “Evil Dead 2 Ash” (with two possessed hands, a shotgun and an axe) and “Evil Dead 2 Deadite Ash” (with a recorder, the Book of the Dead and Lind’a Deadite head). Henrietta and Chainsaw Ash are TBA.

Check out clean imagery inside. I wish they came with shelf space. READ MORE

[News Bites] Never Before Seen ‘Evil Dead 2′ Images, Poster Madness, ‘Godzilla’ Criterion, & ‘Squad’ Redo

Yet another heavy week of news is coming to a close. Is it me or does it seem like there’s more and more stories with each and every passing year? It’s almost TOO much, although I don’t believe in too much horror…

First up in this edition of news bites are a series of new one sheets that are all on display inside. You’ll find sales art for Todd Robinson’s supernatural submarine chiller Phantom that’s now in pre-production. Then you’ll find a UK poster for the now-released Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, with Anchor Bay’s official theatrical art for Texas Killing Fields, in theaters October 14. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Chloe Moretz, the story focuses on the true story of a pair of police officers who undertook to solve two decades of disappearances and homicides — totalling as many as 60 victims — in the industrial wastelands surrounding Gulf Coast refineries.

In DVD news, Twitch has a report on a potential Criterion release of the 1954 classic Gojira/Godzilla. The site’s friend, August Ragone, renowned Kaiju authority and author, has posted up some majorly gargantuan news that can be read by clicking the aforementioned link. What can you expect? How about a DVD/Blu-ray release larger than the legendary creature itself!

In a news brief, a Colombian horror movie is set for Hollywood remake. El Paramo, known in the States as The Squad, is being touted for a Hollywood remake even though it is still two months away from release. According to Radio Santa Fe, production company Rhayuela Cine received a number of offers from Los Angeles and New York based film companies for the U.S. rights to El Paramo. The eventual winner of the bidding war was Scott LaStaiti, executive producer of Love in the Time of Cholera and horror film Turistas. Details on the Columbian film can be found by clicking the title above.

Saving the best for last, special effects artist Shannon Shea has posted an update to his blog that is not to be missed. Shea goes back to 1986 when he was in production with Sam Raimi on Evil Dead 2. The blog details his experience working on the film, while offering up behind-the-scenes description of his creation “Evil” Ed Getley as played by Richard Domeier. Toys: NECA Adds Deer Head to ‘Evil Dead 2′ Accessories

At this past week’s San Diego Comic-Con, NECA unveiled their Evil Dead 2 horror line featuring three versions of Ash (played by Bruce Campbell is the 1987 film directed by Sam Raimi), alongside a deadite version of Henrietta.

In the previously released images you’ll see all sorts of sweet accessories, but apparently NECA wasn’t finished. This morning the toy company changed their Twitter avatar to the possessed deer that’s featured in the maddening sequence where Ash laughs alongside a heap of furniture.

As revealed, the three Ash figures will be as follows: “Hero Ash,” “Deadite Ash” and “Farewell to Arms Ash”, along with “Henrietta” and her elongated demon head.

Comic-Con ’11: Yes, Even Clearer Pics for NECA’s ‘Evil Dead 2′ Line

My apologies if I’m over excited, but I’ve personally been aching to get my hands on some clear photos from NECA’s Evil Dead 2 figure line.

While setting up this past Wednesday, NECA teased some unassembled looks at good ol’ Ash (played by Bruce Campbell is the 1987 film directed by Sam Raimi), while some show floor photos gave us the reveal of the Henrietta cellar deadite (“I buried her in the celler, God help me I buried her in the earthly floor of the fruit cellar…” – I love this quote).

Thanks to the boys over at Figures.com we now have beautiful dead-on snaps of the three Ash figures (“Hero Ash,” “Deadite Ash” and “Farewell to Arms Ash”), along with “Henrietta” and her elongated demon head. I’ll chainsaw the crap all over these.

Again, my apologies for TRIPLE posting these guys, but they’re just so f*cking awesome!!!

Comic-Con ’11: Up Close Look at NECA’s ‘Evil Dead 2′ Line, New Reveal!

May God forgive me for what I have unleashed onto this Earth…. Henrietta is dead. I could not bring myself to dismember her corpse; I dragged her down the steps, I buried her, I buried her in the celler, God help me I buried her in the earthly floor of the fruit cellar…

Update: An update to our previous story as we now have up close and personal images with NECA’s new “Ash” figures, along with the reveal of a Deadite action figure!

The timing couldn’t be any better for NECA to reveal their first wave of action figures based on Sam Raimi’s 1987 classic Evil Dead 2. As we first predicted back in May, the potential is off the charts with options for a handful of variants. The dudes at NECA know what they’re doing, which is proven in the following sneak peak images from the floor of the yet-to-open San Diego Comic-Con. What can you expect besides Bruce Campbell as good ‘ol “Ash”? How about the classic axe, shotgun, tape recorder, chainsaw, along with varient Ash faces (including a possessed Ash). It also looks as if they’ve got even more surprises up their sleeve (take a look for yourself!)

Toys: First Look at Work-in-Progress Ash from ‘Evil Dead 2′ Line!

It was revealed back in March that NECA had licensed the rights to produce action figures based on Sam Raimi’s iconic 1987 Evil Dead 2.

While there are about 40 different figure options, NECA has opted to debut the series with “Ashley J. Williams,” which comes rocking both a freshly wounded stump (“Then it came after me, it got into my hand and it went bad, so I lopped it off at the wrist“) and his trusty boomstick.

The full line will be revealed at the July San Diego Comic-Con, but right now you’ll find a prototype work-in-progress inside, courtesy of Figures.com.

2010-poster

Evil Dead 2

A sequel/remake of the film The Evil Dead. A young man named Ash takes his girlfriend Linda to a secluded cabin, and plays back a professor’s tape recorded recitation of passages from the Book of the Dead. The spell calls up an evil force from the woods which turns Linda into a monstrous Deadite, and threatens to do the same to Ash. When the professor’s daughter and her entourage show up at the cabin, the night turns into a non-stop, grotesquely comic battle with chainsaw and shotgun on one side, demon horde and flying eyeball on the other.
