As We Suspected, ‘Evil Dead’ Is A Sequel That Eventually Leads To Major Crossover In ‘Evil Dead 7′!!

Director Fede Alvarez dropped a bomb on WonderCon audiences during an Evil Dead panel this Sunday in the Anaheim convention center n California.

Back when the red band trailer had been released, We had pointed out some interesting imagery that suggested that maybe the new Evil Dead, in theaters April 5, was actually a sequel. Alvarez confirmed this to the WonderCon crowd, while also adding something major.

He told audiences that an Evil Dead 2 (followed by a planned Evil Dead 3), and the recently announced Army of Darkness 2, will eventually crossover for the ultimate cult horror movie Evil Dead 7, reports Movieweb. So, after two sequels to the current remake – the remake universe will collide with the old “Ash” universe in a film that will amount to be the 4th installment in both franchises.

At this time, Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi are working on the screenplay for Army of Darkness 2, which will continue the story of Ash as seen in the original The Evil Dead from 1981. While Fede Alvarez might have been joking, suggests the site, who was on hand for the panel, he seemed serious when he said he plans to join both his new franchise together with Sam Raimi’s old franchise.

Hail the king, baby. READ MORE

Bruce Campbell On ‘Evil Dead 4′ aka ‘Army Of Darkness 2′

So recently we’ve all kind of heard that Evil Dead 4 might be, according to Bruce Campbell at least, essentially Army Of Darkness 2. While I’d prefer things go back to the woods – I can’t say I fault them for this either. Going bigger and weirder might be the most fun for Raimi and Campbell at this point.

Empire Online recently caught up with the chin himself who explained that the new remake gave them the juice to start up again, “The reception to this movie [Fede Alvarez' remake] has been pretty good so far, so it encouraged Sam and I to go, ‘well crap, maybe we should dust the old chainsaw off. If this movie helps us make another Army Of Darkness – Army Of Darkness 2 – then so be it.

But Army Of Darkness has two different endings! Which one would it continue from? Head inside… READ MORE

Breaking: Fede Alvarez Begins Work On ‘Evil Dead’ Sequel!

The past week all we’ve talked about is Sam Raimi writing Evil Dead 4, but now we’re shifting gears back to the rebooted franchise.

While the TriStar and FilmDistrict remake doesn’t hit theaters until April 5, director Fede Alvarez revealed to a sold out SXSW crowd that he’s already begun writing a sequel to his Evil Dead, starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas.

The film just World Premiered at the film festival in Austin, Texas, as we’ve been retweeting all of the reactions as they come in. Negative reactions? Don’t see any, yet.

So, with Fede penning an Evil Dead sequel, and Raimi working on Evil Dead 4 with his brother Ivan, could these worlds end up colliding? That thought just blew my mind. READ MORE

Fan Made ‘Evil Dead’ Poster Makes ‘Evil Dead IV’ Declaration

I’m not sure who created the art, but Bruce Campbell tweeted a hilarious new one-sheet for Evil Dead, which boasts “If you don’t go see the Evil Dead remake in theaters no one will ever make Evil Dead IV.

There’s probably a bit of truth to the fan made poster, and checking out the Fede Alvarez-directed reboot in theaters April 5 can go a long way in telling Sam Raimi you want more from the Book of the Dead. We vote with the all mighty dollar.

Evan Dickson is lucky enough to catch the remake starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, and Jessica Lucas at SXSW tonight. We’ll report back with a massive thumbs up or down, although I suspect the former. READ MORE

Sam Raimi Says Something Super Funny About ‘The Evil Dead’

With Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful in theaters March 8, and the remake of his The Evil Dead in theaters April 5, the now A-list director has been in the press spotlight quite a bit. Within the range of questions, a can of worms was opened when he sort of implied that he and his older brother would begin working on a script for Evil Dead 4 this summer. He went on to further clarify that he really had nothing else to work on at the moment, and being that the fans wanted it, why the heck now? It sounded encouraging.

Further adding to the conversation, Vulture asked him about about remake for his 1981 The Evil Dead, questioning if it was flattering to realize that this small film made in 1981 still commands such a loyal following.

His response is absolutely hilarious.

I don’t look at it that way,” said Raimi. “Rather, I look at it as, ‘What a sorry state the world is in that it has come to this!’ [Laughs.] The lowest-budget, B-movie, drive-in picture is elevated to this status? That’s really how I look at it!

It’s no wonder that Raimi has been so incredibly hesitant to revisit the pages of the Necronomicon, Ash and all of his deadite glory. There couldn’t be anything more embarrassing than for Raimi to deliver an Evil Dead 4 and to to have it flop – and if he believes there’s no audience for it, why would he want to even scratch the surface? Hopefully the online press and potential success of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead really stoke the fire within…

Sam Raimi Clarifies His ‘Evil Dead 4′ Comments; Has His Passion Returned?

Just the other day it was discovered that Sam Raimi made a huge statement regarding the much-desired Evil Dead 4 in the press notes for Oz the Great and Powerful. “I would love to make Evil Dead 4,” Raimi stated further adding, “My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.

The kids at Bleeding Cool caught up with Raimi at the Oz junket to get a direct response straight from the horse’s mouth. The news isn’t great, but it isn’t all that bad either. Sam Raimi Tickles Our ‘Evil Dead 4′ Funny Bone Again

Yes, there’s a remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 The Evil Dead arriving in theaters April 5, but that hasn’t stopped the evil genius from teasing fans yet again with the potential of an Evil Dead 4.

I would love to make Evil Dead 4,” Raimi stated in the press notes for his Oz the Great and Powerful (in theaters March 8), as reported by Bleeding Cool. “My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.

I bet Raimi has been itching to drop that juicy nugget into the hands of us hardcore Deadite and Ash fans. And with the Fede Alvarez-directed remake in theaters next month, I can only wonder if there’s some sort of tie-in. If you recall, I pointed out some suspicious imagery in the first trailer, released last July, that implies that Evil Dead may actually be a sequel.

Thoughts? What should happen when the Book of the Dead is opened once more? Speak below!

[OMFG] The Fake ‘Evil Dead 4′ Was Gonna Cost $71 Million! Wanna See What It Was Going To Be About?

In the words of Mr. Disgusting, “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH“! Yesterday we gave you an update on how Sam Raimi clamped down on Award Pictures‘ totally unauthorized Evil Dead 4: Consequences. If not, go ahead and read about it and come back. We’ll be here.

Today Moviehole got their hands on the synopsis, which reads, “EVIL DEAD IV: CONSEQUENCES: Horror, 136 mins. Prod co: Award Pictures. Prod/scr: Graham MacCrae, Glenn MacCrae. Budget: $71m. Pre-production. Delivery date: 2004. Ash may need a hand fighting deadites, demons, the FBI and reality TV.

Obviously they missed that delivery date of 2004 but were still working on it today which makes them some pretty tenacious dudes. And $71 million for a sequel that would have had an Ash without Bruce Campbell? Bold! The same article also makes note of the fact that Awards Pictures also had a sequel to Big Trouble In Little China planned called More Trouble In Little China. The budget on that one? $75 Million. These guys are the kings of inflated budgets for movies they don’t own.

As far as real movies go – director Fede Alvarez recently wrapped up photography on Evil Dead, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures’ remake Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror classic, that was shot in Auckland, New Zealand. The film was written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (with a polish by Diablo Cody) is produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the popular Ash character in the original trilogy. The film is due in theaters on April 12th, 2013.

Sam Raimi Clamps Down On Unauthorized ‘Evil Dead 4: Consequences’

Award Pictures had been working on a film called Evil Dead 4: Consequences. In addition to having a horrible title with that whole “consequences” tag, they didn’t have the rights to film a sequel to begin with. Naturally original producers Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert filed a suit against Award Pictures and its president Glenn Macrae. Now the THR is reporting that Macrae fas failed to show up in court.

Per THR, “In May, Renaissance Pictures, formed in 1979 by Raimi, producer Robert Tapert and actor-producer Bruce Campbell for the purpose of making the first film, sued Award Pictures, which was in the midst of making ‘Evil Dead 4: Consequences’. The movie was alleged to be interfering with Raimi’s plan to make his own sequel for Sony Pictures and FilmDistrict. After the lawsuit was filed, Award Pictures and its president Glenn MacCrae failed to respond in court.

Judging by the language in the article, it seems that Raimi is still considering an official Evil Dead 4. Macrae has said he will challenge the suit. It’s an interesting case and you can read more about it here.

[OMFG, WTF, SAY WHAT?] ‘EVIL DEAD 4′ In The Works — Sam Raimi Suing To Stop It?!?!

I literally just had my mind blown, courtesy of this article at THR, and it more than warrants my ridiculously obnoxious headline. According to the website, a fight has broken out over who has rights to do a new sequel of the 1981 horror classic, The Evil Dead.

Apparently, Award Pictures says it plans to make a fourth film in the series. Yes, the long-promised Evil Dead 4. Renaissance Pictures, formed in 1979 by producer/director Sam Raimi, producer Robert Tapert, and actor/producer Bruce Campbell for the purpose of making the first film, is suing Award Pictures for the sequel rights, which is interesting considering they’ve abandoned any talk of Evil Dead 4 and started production on the remake, Evil Dead, April 11 with FilmDistrict and Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.

Anyways, the interesting bit that comes out of the article is that this potential coming film is allegedly interfering with Raimi’s own plan to make his own sequel for Sony Pictures and FilmDistrict. But Award Pictures isn’t laying down. The company is using Raimi’s own comment in a 2000 book that he would never do a sequel as proof that the Evil Dead trademark was abandoned. The company now says it is the primary trademark holder of the film title.

Skipping ahead a bit, Renaissance says Award Pictures’ planned film entitled Evil Dead 4: Consequences, is intended to cause confusion to consumers, and also says that the key plot elements and character names “would inevitably infringe Renaissance’s copyright rights in The Evil Dead.” Alleging trademark infringement, false advertising, injury to business reputation, Renaissance is asking for an injunction against further infringement and further monetary damages.

You can read the lengthy article by clicking here, but let’s all have a little chat about this right here, right now. While it’s sweet to hear that Award Pictures would be moving on the inevitable Evil Dead 4, there’d be zero input by Raimi and Co. Therefore, it would probably be some bullsh*t direct-to-VOD sequel that 100% wouldn’t star Bruce Campbell. Do we even want that? I’d rather sit and hope that Raimi comes around and one day delivers on his promise than have some company half-ass a bullsh*t sequel in the vein of Asylum garbage. Good luck Raimi!

What say you?

‘The Evil Dead’ Remake Gets a Release Date!

The Evil Dead Remake Gets a Release Date!

Last night got some extra story details on the Ghost House/Mandate Pictures and Sony/FilmDistrict Evil Dead remake which starts filming in New Zealand in March. Now the studio has announced the film’s official release date…

… April 12, 2013.

That’s actually not so bad when you consider the fact that they have yet to shoot the thing. There will be plenty of time for post-production and it’s not like they’d release it during awards season anyway. Just be glad it’s not getting dumped in January.

Fede Alvarez directs from his own screenplay co-written with Rodo Sayagues. Revisions were done by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody. The Next Step for the ‘Evil Dead’ Remake

The Next Step for the Evil Dead Remake

Bloody Disgusting has learned that Ghost House/Mandate Pictures and Sony/FilmDistrict will be taking to New Zealand next March to begin lensing Evil Dead, their redo of Sam Raimi’s cult classic 1981 The Evil Dead. Fede Alvarez directs from his own screenplay co-written with Rodo Sayagues. Revisions were done by Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody.

The story centers on five friends holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead with a demonic force unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. As we exclusively reported, there is a drug subplot.

Casting is currently underway for the friends, David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia. David is a mechanic and is engaged to Natalie. Mia is the friend who is heading to the cabin to detox; Olivia is her best friend/nurse. Eric, presumably, is the kid who unleashes the demons. READ MORE

Diablo Cody Pushes Off Early ‘Evil Dead’ Blame

evildeadinfal050511 Diablo Cody Pushes Off Early Evil Dead Blame

After openly admitting her fear to touch the original source material, Diablo Cody is already pushing blame off onto writer/director Federico Alvarez for the forthcoming The Evil Dead reboot. She explains to MTV what the filmmakers wanted, and specifically what she was hired to do. I guess if you hate it, she doesn’t want any share of the blame?

It was really important again to the filmmakers that it remain totally grounded in reality and timeless. They weren’t trying to make some hip trendy horror movie full of pop culture references. I really hope people don’t think that that’s what I was hired to do,” Cody said. “I came in and worked on characters and relationships, things like that.

Cody also explains that the film will have plenty of references to the original movie. She kept the 1981 flick in mind when writing her changes to the script, and said it’s important to everyone involved to keep the spirit of the first movie alive in this one. This includes keeping the original team together.

I will say that Sam Raimi, of course, and Bruce Campbell are both involved as producers and that I wouldn’t have worked on it otherwise. Had to have the original geniuses,” she said.

As we broke the new exclusively, the reboot will follow five twenty-something friends that become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival. The story will carry a unique new drug theme that causes confusion among the teens. READ MORE

Diablo Cody Feared Penning ‘The Evil Dead’ Reboot

Diablo Cody Feared Penning The Evil Dead Reboot

An Oscar-winning writer tackling horror? That’s rare. Usually it’s the stars who free-fall into our genre after making a name for themselves (Halle Berry in Gothika and Hilary Swank in The Reaping, to name a few). But let’s not kid ourselves, WE know that stars should always be doing horror, no matter how big they get, which is probably why Diablo Cody stuck to her guns and took a stab at Ghost House Pictures’ retooling of The Evil Dead. Taking on a modern spin on Sam Raimi’s beloved 1981 film is dangerous, even Cody knew she was entering a cabin where she may never return from. I can’t help but to give her some props, especially because she didn’t have to do it (she can do anything she wants as an Oscar winner). Here’s what she told Collider:

I was nervous to take the job because I thought, Ugh, I’m gonna get shit for this. People are not gonna like this, because all people know of me is like Juno and they think I’m gonna pollute ‘Evil Dead’ with like wacky dialogue and cute stuff and folk music, and it’s like ‘No, look I understand what this is. I’m interested in storytelling here and making it scary and good and true to the original,’ ” she said.

Cody adds, “Because the director’s draft was really scary, I tried to stay away from some of the big horror set pieces. I didn’t wanna mess with his vision, because he’s the one who ultimately has to shoot it. That being said, there is a moment near the — I mean it’s unbelievably violent (laughs). Occasionally I threw in a wound here or there. I didn’t write anything extravagant.READ MORE

Bruce Campbell Cameo Confirmed for ‘Evil Dead’ Reboot

As we broke the news exclusively last week, The Evil Dead franchise star Bruce Campbell was rumored for a cameo in the Federico Alvarez-directed reboot that’s to go into production some time next year.

Spanish website El Pais caught up with Alvarez who all but confirmed the cameo, while also giving fans some hefty reassurance.

We realize the mistakes not to make,” says Alvarez. “As fans of the original, we know we are going to offend those who are also fans just by taking this job. We’re going to honor the original film along with the existing fans and hope to bring in a new audience as well.

Because we are fans of the original, we realize that nobody wants to see a celebrity in a remake like this,” he continues. “The only recognizable face will be that of Bruce Campbell, and he will be in a cameo toward the end of the film. We are going to change the characters and some story details, while keeping the basic outline of friends who are beleaguered by demons in a cabin alone.

Alvarez continues, “Sam Raimi says there’s a fine line between horror and comedy. The original Evil Dead was intended as a straight horror movie with scenes of extreme gore directly designed to shock the viewer. I rented the movie with a friend from a video store at just thirteen years old, and that was a big mistake! The film scared the life out of us.

Diablo Cody is currently rewriting Alvarez’s treatment.

Update: More on That ‘Evil Dead’ Remake…

Update: We can confirm Diablo Cody is secretly involved with the screenplay. Story soon.

Just yesterday we broke the news exclusively that short film director Fede Alvarez (Federico Alvarez) would be getting behind the camera for a reboot of Sam Raimi’s cult classic The Evil Dead. We went scoop hunting on the heels of Dread Central’s tip-off that Raimi was flying to Detroit to cast up the long-awaited fourth Evil Dead.

Now that the dust has settled, here’s what remains: We exclusively learned that the script for the remake is still being retooled and is undergoing rewrites. They’re not even close to casting yet. As of this writing Bruce Campbell will NOT star, but he could cameo (maybe the down-and-out “Ash” will pass the torch on to a younger S-Mart employee?)

The summary? I’ll believe there’s a new Evil Dead in theaters when I’m watching it with my own two eyes. And always remember: Shop smart, shop S-Mart.

BREAKING: Director for ‘The Evil Dead’ Reboot!

With the news breaking late last night we had to wait until this morning to work our magic.

Bloody Disgusting is being told exclusively that Sam Raimi is gearing up to produce a quasi-remake of The Evil Dead, his breakthrough horror film from 1981 that starred Bruce Campbell as “Ash”, a modern day warrior who fends of resurrected deadites.

In an exclusive scoop, we’re told that Fede Alvarez (Federico Alvarez) is directing for Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and Mandate. The remake was announced way back in 2004. No word on casting or if Bruce Campbell will return.

As Dread Central reported yesterday, it sounds as if caasting is already taking place in Detroit, Michigan for a “low budget” shoot before Raimi steps behind the camera for Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Alvarez got his foot in the door with his epic 2009 sci-fi short Panic Attack! Watch it below.

Updated: Is Sam Raimi Secretly Remaking ‘Evil Dead’?

Update #4: Director revealed.

Update #3: Bruce Campbell replied to a fan via his unverified Twitter account: “@TheMike31 Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.” The Twitter was plugged on his official website giving some validity to the account/tweet! So, it sounds as if the remake is in motion? Hmmmm….

Update #2: Sources close to Raimi denying reports to Bloody.

Update #1: Upon my own personal research, I’ve learned that Raimi is casting ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ in Detroit, which takes some steam out of this story.

Back when 30 Days of Night was coming out, Sam Raimi told Bloody Disgusting that so long as he has big projects like Spider-Man on the horizon, there was little hope for a fourth The Evil Dead. His mentality was that he could make a fourth film whenever he wanted, so why jeopardize his booming career?

Mix in the development of a remake of The Evil Dead, which never found the right pitch. Raimi announced it on the heels of a successful opening for The Grudge, while simultaneously nixing any possibility of a Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash at New Line.

Then you have the fact that Raimi tossed horror fans a bone with his highly entertaining Drag Me to Hell.

How does it all add up? With the remake scene drying up, has Raimi bailed on the idea of remaking The Evil Dead? Or could Drag Me to Hell have reinvigorated the horror legend into getting behind the camera for the long-gestured/promised Evil Dead 4?

Dread Central has it on “good authority” from what they claim is a very reliable source that long-time Sam Raimi editor Bob Murawski (Army of Darkness, Spider-Man, Drag Me to Hell) has packed up and headed out to Detroit to begin work on the long talked about fourth entry into the Evil Dead franchise. They say it will be “a small indie thing like the first two.” If they’re wrong, it’s going to be one giant egg in the face…

If true, the questions are gushing: Could it be the remake? Who’s directing? If it’s NOT Evil Dead 4, what is it? What’s Bruce Campbell up to? Does this have anything to do with Campbell launching a Twitter account (@GroovyBruce) this past weekend? Were they planning to announce at Comic-Con?

Breathe, Brad, Breathe.
