Bats 2 (V)

Set in present day Afghanistan, the sequel centres on a group of soldiers who endeavor to capture Fazul, a fanatical terrorist who has escaped into the maze of caves underlying the landscape of the country. As the troops spelunk, they encounter one major obstacle: genetically altered bats programmed to seek out flesh and consume it.

[BD Contest] Meet Our Ninth “Deadite Of The Day” Nathaniel Fitzgerald!!!

It’s time we started winding down our Deadite Of The Day contest. As we stated before (head inside for the full list of rules)! Winners will be announced daily from March 25th – April 5th (weekends excluded), and that means we are no longer open for submissions. Which makes me sort of sad, because this has actually been very rewarding for me. It’s a lot of fun to share these creations with the world and make true horror fans happy.

Today’s winner is Nathaniel Fitzgerald (along with Danielle Skelley for putting up with it)! They created a pretty awesome wedding shower invite! It’s this kind of commitment to the lifestyle that I can really get behind. In Nathaniel’s words, “My name is Nathaniel Fitzgerald, and I’m from Zombie Town, Pittsburgh, PA! I was thinking of posting pictures from my own Evil Dead collection of goodies, instead I thought I’d send the invitations I made for the wedding shower zombie party my wife and I had last October around Halloween!! You may have to blur out the phone number’s and address’s to post this online, but I thought you might like the “Edited” version of the original poster with Wedding Veil and Engagement Ring! Thanks!!!” I did indeed blur out their contact info – so the ugly smudges are mine, not theirs.

Head inside to check it out! And remember, there’s still ONE winner left to announce this week. READ MORE

Awesome Infograph Compares Stats From The New ‘Evil Dead’ To The Old ‘Evil Dead’!

Are you gearing up for your 10 PM showing of Evil Dead tonight? The film technically hits theaters this Friday, April 5th, but I suspect a lot of you will be heading in later this evening (my review here)! To celebrate, John Gholson over at Movies.com has created a cool infograph that compares stats from the original film to the upcoming remake.

In the film, “In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead. An archaeologist’s tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization. Playing the taped incantations, the youths unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.” Jane Levy, Lou Taylor Pucci, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore star.

[BD Contest] Meet Our First “Deadite Of The Day” Sean Gooding!!!

Did you miss our initial post on regarding the Deadite Of The Day contest? If not – don’t worry. We’re accepting submissions up until April 3rd at [email protected] (head inside for the full list of rules)! Winners will be announced daily from March 25th – April 5th (weekends excluded). Submissions will be open the whole time, so if you see something you think you can top… TOP IT!

I figured I’d start this off with a bang and announce a winner with one of the most extensive collections of anything I’ve ever seen! His name is Sean Gooding (@GonzoSean on Twitter) and he also runs the site Deadites Online. In his own words, “Up until a few years ago I owned a very large Evil Dead Collection, these pictures were from the height of my collecting days, I still own the full Scale replica of Ash’s chainsaw from Evil Dead 2 and some boxed figures and Blu Rays.” He also included a sketch of Ash that he did that’s pretty badass too.

Sadly, Sean hails from the UK. So if he wants to be eligible for the signed poster he needs to have someone in the US it can be mailed to. Hopefully he does! Though – again – we still have 9 more winners to announce who are also eligible. Head inside to check out his awesome former collection of stuff! It’s f*cking AMAZING!!! You’ll also find the original rules for the contest below the picture gallery! READ MORE

New ‘Evil Dead’ Poster Has A Different Image But Starts Out Small…

As we’re getting down to the wire there’s another poster for Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, the remake to Sam Raimi’s horror classic that stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas. I loved the film (my review here) so, while this poster is currently too small to read where the quotes are coming from, I know at least one of them is mine.

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead. An archaeologist’s tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization. FilmDistrict and TriStar will unleash Hell on April 5. Head inside for the TINY poster (we’ll update with a bigger one as it becomes available). READ MORE

[Reader Review] Scorpionsy Compares the New ‘Evil Dead’ With the Original

The Fede Alvarez-directed Evil Dead played like gangbusters as SXSW earning a ton of great reviews (and a few mixed ones, to be fair). But that’s not the only place it’s been playing – the film is currently on a multi-city tour that is garnering a lot of good word of mouth. BD Reader Scorpionsy caught up with the film on one of its’ stops and was kind enough to shoot us this review – a mixed take on the film that prefers the 1981 original.

If I may, I think Scorpionsy is doing himself a little bit of disservice by comparing every nook and cranny of it to the original. While Alvarez’s film is very much of the Evil Dead universe, it’s not the exact same. Nor should it be. It’s very much its’ own experience. As far as stuff like the make-up being different, that’s a change I appreciate. Far better for Alvarez to do his own thing than fall on the sword of those pronounced ocular cavities. Read my review here. I stand by every word. Then again, it may come down to the fact that the original Evil Dead, IMO, left plenty of room for improvement. But it’s Socrpionsy’s favorite movie, so naturally the remake starts out at a disadvantage for him.

[Random Cool] A Revealing Look At Practical Effects In The New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie!

So there’s been a lot of back and forth about whether or not the new Evil Dead is 100% CGI free or if they’re just using a tiny bit here and there for things like wire removal and color grading. I was expecting them to use a tiny bit of it to cover up small stuff that considering we’re in the age when CGI is used to remove blemishes and occasionally slim down the star of a romantic comedy… but maybe not?

Now we’ve got a cool look at a gag that doesn’t cover up its practical nature in the Evil Dead trailer. Thanks to reader DJBlack1313 for pointing it out. You’ll notice a cleaned up version of it above (Edit: The image above is from the first red band teaser – the one inside is from the newer full length) and inside you can see a version of it that made it to the trailer where the tube is visible.

[Special Report] The Set Of ‘Evil Dead’ Is Violent, Chaotic And Bloody As Hell… PART ONE!

Last summer I spent two days in Auckland, New Zealand to check out the set of TriStar and FilmDistrict’s upcoming Evil Dead remake. I’m not going to mince words here, I have never walked away from a set this confident and hopeful that a movie will turn out well. With a lot of these visits you get the feeling that people are just fort of putting on their best face to meet you, and you’re not entirely convinced of their commitment to making a great movie.

Not here. Fede Alvarez is not f*cking around. Neither is producer Rob Tapert. Nor are Robert Gillies (the production designer) or Roger Murray (the prosthetics and props maker). The film’s DP, Aaron Morton, isn’t f*cking around either when it comes to getting those crazy roving tree shots we love so much. And the cast? Enduring all of the prosthetics, pain and hundreds of gallons of blood? Not f*cking around.

I’m not talking about a bunch of disinterested dilettantes talking about “how much they love the project.” I’m talking about seeing the bloody proof of it firsthand. I’m not just talking about the scenes we witnessed, but the messy aftermath of everything they’d been shooting up until that point. You just can’t fake a production like this for two days while press is around.

Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Elizabeth Blackmore, Lou Taylor Pucci and Jessica Lucas star in the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film. It hits theaters on April 12th, 2013 but you can read PART ONE of our set visit right now… READ MORE

The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Is At Least An R, “So Bloody It Will Make Your Head Spin”

Director Fede Alvarez recently wrapped up photography on Evil Dead, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures’ remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror classic, that was shot in Auckland, New Zealand. The film was written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (with a polish by Diablo Cody) is produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the popular Ash character in the original trilogy. The film is due in theaters on April 12th, 2013.

I know a bunch of you guys are worried about how legit this movie is – but I think this quote from Raimi himself can help put that to bed. He told Collider, “It’s really bloody. It’s so bloody, it will make your head spin. I’ve seen almost all the dailies and they’re really going for it. It’s gonna be grisly and intense and non-stop.” Does that mean it will have to be R-rated then? “Definitely R. Maybe worse.

I was onset recently and while I can’t say much – I don’t think you should worry either. Head inside for more (including a minor update on the Poltergeist remake)! READ MORE

Bruce Campbell Has Seen The New ‘Evil Dead’ And Says “It’s Fabulous”!

Now Campbell confirms to Digital Spy that he’s seen the movie – and that he knows why you’re probably concerned – but that it’s all groovy baby! “it’s going to take a bit to get the ‘Evil Dead’ fans behind it. We know we’ve pissed a lot of them off. We appreciate that and we appreciate their anger and their zeal, but the only thing we want to impress upon them is that we didn’t screw it up. This is going to be just as memorable as [the original] Evil Dead without being the same movie… You don’t want to remake something shot-for-shot. I can’t believe they remade ‘Psycho’ – what the hell kind of a waste of celluloid is that? It’s a creative medium. The nice thing is the film looks beautiful. The effects are 10 times better than we ever had access to and the actors are all better than we were in 1979. Though granted Sam Raimi is a mad genius, so we got a crazy result like Evil Dead out of this amateur enthusiasm sort of thing.

The film is due in theaters on April 12th, 2013. I was onset recently and while I can’t say much – I don’t think you should worry either. And head inside for more quotes from Campbell! He goes on to talk a little bit about the film’s structure and how it differs from the original. READ MORE

Sam Raimi Confirms Ash Will Not Be In The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake, Says The Movie Is ‘Gut-Wrenching’

Director Fede Alvarez is currently wrapping up photography on Evil Dead, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures’ remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror classic, now filming in Auckland, New Zealand. The film was written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (with a polish by Diablo Cody) is produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the popular Ash character in the original trilogy.

Now Raimi confirms what we’ve more or less been suspecting, that the character of Ash will not be in the remake. He told MTV, “No, that character’s not in this movie“. He also said that the new one is “gut-wrenching, scary and intense“. This all fits nicely with what I’m expecting from the movie so far. From what I’ve heard, this thing is intense and gory and stays true to the spirit of the original without copying its exact story. In other words, I’m expecting it to do what remakes are (at their best) supposed to do.

In the reboot, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.” A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

The film is due in theaters on April 12th, 2013. Head inside to watch Raimi discuss the remake. READ MORE

‘Evil Dead’ Reboot Calls For “Darker” Demon Blood!

evil dead blood Evil Dead Reboot Calls For Darker Demon Blood!

While it’s not much to look at, director Fede Alvarez posted the above behind-the-scenes photo from Evil Dead, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures’ remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror classic now filming in Auckland, New Zealand for release on April 12, 2013. The photo displays “darker” demon blood, insinuating we’ll be seeing some serious red flowing, not to mention a wide array of blood colors.

The original effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the popular Ash character (in the original trilogy) and was Co-Producer of the original, now brings them back to produce an Evil Dead for today’s audience that’s high on the horror, gore, plot twists and more from a screenplay written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues.

In the reboot, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
