As we’re getting down to the wire there’s another poster for Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, the remake to Sam Raimi’s horror classic that stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas. I loved the film (my review here) so, while this poster is currently too small to read where the quotes are coming from, I know at least one of them is mine.

Even before Sam Raimi and company fully defined the character in Evil Dead II, Ash was always a strange hero. For much of the more seriously minded The Evil Dead, we see Ash cowering in the background while the more manly Scotty takes care of business. It’s only when Scotty finds defeat (and rape?) at the hands of some Evil Dead trees that Ash finally steps up to the plate.

That’s pretty much how he’s been ever since. We know Ash as a mouthy idiot who can dish out violence but is just as likely to talk tough and run away from it (when he’s not getting knocked around and abused like a rag doll, that is). We love Ash, but he’s not the only character of this type. There are many other Ash-a-Likes out there, some knowing ripoffs, others mere coincidences.

[Reader Review] Scorpionsy Compares the New ‘Evil Dead’ With the Original

The Fede Alvarez-directed Evil Dead played like gangbusters as SXSW earning a ton of great reviews (and a few mixed ones, to be fair). But that’s not the only place it’s been playing – the film is currently on a multi-city tour that is garnering a lot of good word of mouth. BD Reader Scorpionsy caught up with the film on one of its’ stops and was kind enough to shoot us this review – a mixed take on the film that prefers the 1981 original.

If I may, I think Scorpionsy is doing himself a little bit of disservice by comparing every nook and cranny of it to the original. While Alvarez’s film is very much of the Evil Dead universe, it’s not the exact same. Nor should it be. It’s very much its’ own experience. As far as stuff like the make-up being different, that’s a change I appreciate. Far better for Alvarez to do his own thing than fall on the sword of those pronounced ocular cavities. Read my review here. I stand by every word. Then again, it may come down to the fact that the original Evil Dead, IMO, left plenty of room for improvement. But it’s Socrpionsy’s favorite movie, so naturally the remake starts out at a disadvantage for him.

Sony Pictures International has released 6 images from the set of Evil Dead, the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic opening in cinemas April 5.

Starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, Jessica Lucas, Bruce Campbell, “five twenty-something friends who become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead. I always thought the above image from the Fede Alvarez-directed Evil Dead was the most striking released, and have been consistently shocked that it’s barely been used. Thumbs up to the Russian distributor for taking the image of a terrified Jane Levy and featuring it as their official theatrical one-sheet (too bad they digitally removed the blood)!

Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, Jessica Lucas, and Bruce Campbell also star in the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film.

There’s only a few more weeks to go until you can see Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, the remake to Sam Raimi’s 1981 horror classic that spawned a pair of sequels. The new film stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas… but there’s one addition everyone’s been wondering about, so in honor of Evil Dead Month here we go….

I’m giving you fair warning – this is most definitely a MAJOR SPOILER. In fact I’m going to make it sort of difficult to get to the actual content of this piece because I know how much it sucks to accidentally be spoiled on something. Still, you may want to revisit this story after you’ve seen the film. Bookmark it now.

10 Top “Cabin In The Woods” Movies!!!

Evil Dead Month marches on here at Bloody-Disgusting! One of the most important aspects of the Evil Dead films (sans Army Of Darkness of course), is the cabin they take place in. Having seen the new remake, I can verify that the aesthetic and layout are more or less the same as they were in the first two films of the original trilogy. Of course, while they may be the pinnacle of the “Cabin In The Woods” subgenre – there’s a sh*t ton more where that came from!

These kind of films are among my favorite in horror, I love a good rural setting. So I’m almost jealous that The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards) got the idea for this list – which he wrote – first!

We hinted at this earlier, but now we’d like to officially announce our DEADITE OF THE DAY contest.

Continuing our Evil Dead month here on Bloody Disgusting, artist Trevor Anderson posted a Tumblr update about a painting that was commisioned by TriStar and FilmDistrict for Evil Dead‘s SXSW premiere (read our review).

“I was contacted to do a painting for the remake of The Evil Dead, directed by Fede Alvarez, to help promote the film at it’s SXSW premiere the other night!,” said the artist. “I would have given anything to be there to hand out posters and see the film early, but sadly, that kind of thing is out of my price range. The remake of The Evil Dead is probably in my top three of most anticipated horror films, and it might have shot to the #1 position after all the positive press about the film that’s been reaching my ears. I was very excited to get to do a piece for the film, and i hope my painting lives up the insanity that i’m sure the film will contain.”

FilmDistrict and TriStar’s Evil Dead premiered earlier this week at SXSW, and I thought it was a pretty damn groovy thing to experience with a crowd. Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) is one of the film’s MVP’s as Eric, a sensitive and thoughtful school teacher. He’s the most relatable character in the movie, has all the best lines and takes quite a beating.

Evil Dead baby!

Forget Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell parading down the red carpet at the Paramount Theater in lovely downtown Austin promoting their little magician flick. For the 1,200 or so blood-thirsty ravenous horror fans circling the entire city block, it was all about the Evil Dead last night.

When word first leaked out that the remake of the The Evil Dead was indeed going to happen, the internet exploded. Disgust, disdain, and dastardly dismemberment were the order of the day. The main question on everyone’s split bifurcated tongues was simply, “Why?” Why the fuck would you mess with a classic horror film that has meant so much to so many and truly helped usher in a new era of ultra-intense gore and insanely creative shoestring budget filmmaking? For many, like me, it was akin to cinematic treason.

Now let’s be honest here. Most of you never saw the original The Evil Dead on a big screen during its initial theatrical run way back in 1981. Some of you, like me, may have been lucky enough to catch the brilliant 1987 remake Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn on the big screen during a very, very limited run (Alameda Theater in Houston, Texas with about seven other brave fanatics in the audience!). [SXSW '13 Review] ‘Evil Dead’ Is Amazingly Gory And Fun!

FilmDistrict and TriStar’s Evil Dead just premiered at SXSW and I had a total blast with it. It’s pretty much exactly the movie you think it is, but it goes further (and gets wetter) than you’re probably expecting.

“It’s even gorier than you’re expecting. I seriously don’t have a clue as to how they wrangled an “R” rating here. Blood, pus, bone fragments, limbs and brains are flung around with playful abundance and the result is both punishing and exhilarating… This film doesn’t condemn its audience, it exalts it – and as a result it’s able to achieve a sustained symphony of carnage that energizes rather than exhausts.”

Directed by Fede Alvarez, the R-rated remake stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas.

Breaking: Fede Alvarez Begins Work On ‘Evil Dead’ Sequel!

The past week all we’ve talked about is Sam Raimi writing Evil Dead 4, but now we’re shifting gears back to the rebooted franchise.

While the TriStar and FilmDistrict remake doesn’t hit theaters until April 5, director Fede Alvarez revealed to a sold out SXSW crowd that he’s already begun writing a sequel to his Evil Dead, starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas.

The film just World Premiered at the film festival in Austin, Texas, as we’ve been retweeting all of the reactions as they come in. Negative reactions? Don’t see any, yet.

So, with Fede penning an Evil Dead sequel, and Raimi working on Evil Dead 4 with his brother Ivan, could these worlds end up colliding? That thought just blew my mind. READ MORE

I’m not sure who created the art, but Bruce Campbell tweeted a hilarious new one-sheet for Evil Dead, which boasts “If you don’t go see the Evil Dead remake in theaters no one will ever make Evil Dead IV.”

There’s probably a bit of truth to the fan made poster, and checking out the Fede Alvarez-directed reboot in theaters April 5 can go a long way in telling Sam Raimi you want more from the Book of the Dead. We vote with the all mighty dollar.

Evan Dickson is lucky enough to catch the remake starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, and Jessica Lucas at SXSW tonight. We’ll report back with a massive thumbs up or down, although I suspect the former. READ MORE

TriStar and FilmDistrict are going 2000′s on us with their official website for Evil Dead, the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic that will premiere tomorrow night at the SXSW Film Festival before opening in theaters April 5.

Bloody reader ‘Keith Yambert’ tipped us off to the newly updated site that’s jam-packed with goodies ranging from Twitter skins, ringtones, previously released pics and redband trailers, all within a vitual tour of the cabin! Yambert tells us that you can enter the cabin with your Facebook account and it actually puts things like pics and Facebook posts right in the environment of the cabin AND in the Noteran Demonto! It’s absolutely AMAZING and disturbing.

The latest Book of the Dead will unleash upon stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore, Jessica Lucas, and quite possibly Bruce Campbell. 5 Favorite Moments From ‘Evil Dead 2′!!!

Evil Dead 2 is my favorite Evil Dead film (a ranking I’m open to changing after I see the remake on Friday). It’s almost strange that it works so well for me. I love great dialogue, but there’s relatively little of it to be found in the movie (aside from its iconic one-liners). I love rich characters, and the film doesn’t seem particularly interested in defining those specifics. I love a tight narrative, and Evil Dead 2 isn’t so much a story as it is a series of moments that work exceedingly well together.

I really mean that last part as a compliment, both about the moments and about the film working. Evil Dead 2 breaks so many rules, yet it sings remarkably in spite of that. It’s cinematic and jokey in all the right ways, an epic and gory “Three Stooges” homage.

Sam Raimi Says Something Super Funny About ‘The Evil Dead’

With Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful in theaters March 8, and the remake of his The Evil Dead in theaters April 5, the now A-list director has been in the press spotlight quite a bit. Within the range of questions, a can of worms was opened when he sort of implied that he and his older brother would begin working on a script for Evil Dead 4 this summer. He went on to further clarify that he really had nothing else to work on at the moment, and being that the fans wanted it, why the heck now? It sounded encouraging.

Further adding to the conversation, Vulture asked him about about remake for his 1981 The Evil Dead, questioning if it was flattering to realize that this small film made in 1981 still commands such a loyal following.

His response is absolutely hilarious.

“I don’t look at it that way,” said Raimi. “Rather, I look at it as, ‘What a sorry state the world is in that it has come to this!’ [Laughs.] The lowest-budget, B-movie, drive-in picture is elevated to this status? That’s really how I look at it!”

It’s no wonder that Raimi has been so incredibly hesitant to revisit the pages of the Necronomicon, Ash and all of his deadite glory. There couldn’t be anything more embarrassing than for Raimi to deliver an Evil Dead 4 and to to have it flop – and if he believes there’s no audience for it, why would he want to even scratch the surface? Hopefully the online press and potential success of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead really stoke the fire within…
