I’ve Already Decided I Don’t Want To Play ‘Basement Crawl’

Hello, my name is Adam, and I have a fear of clowns.

Polish developer Bloober Team has unveiled their next game, a mysterious PS4 exclusive launch title called Basement Crawl. We don’t know really anything about it outside of the above picture of an intensely freaky clown and the strong possibility that this creepy little bastard may or may not be chasing my screaming ass through a basement. I’m going to go ahead and hand over all future coverage of this game to TJ from now on — I need to go turn on every light and start thinking happy thoughts.

[Interview] Kevin Riepl On Scoring ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’ And Living Up To The Legacy Of The Films

I recently had the opportunity to chat with composer Kevin Riepl, the man behind the soundtrack of the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines. Riepl’s work can also be heard in games like Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, as well as several horror films, including Silent Night and Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. Colonial Marines is a different beast in that its considered a sequel to Aliens, which obviously has a massive, devoted fan base, so there’s a definite bar to live up to. Kevin and I discuss those expectations and more after the break.

Some Extremely Dedicated Fans Have Translated The Japan Exclusive ‘Silent Hill Play Novel’

Japan gets a lot of great exclusives, like the Silent Hill Sounds Box and Fatal Frame IV — both of which I’m still pretty bitter about — but at least now we can sort of cross one off the list. The Silent Hill Play Novel was an altered version of the original Silent Hill that released for the Game Boy Advance exclusively in Japan back in 2001. It was a visual novel of sorts that retold the story of the first game through text-based gameplay with some player interaction that came from basic decisions and various puzzles. Strangely enough, it lacked one of the most iconic things about the survival horror franchise, a soundtrack.

If you missed it, now is your chance to experience the long forgotten game, which has been translated and made fully playable by Amy Balot of Silent Hill fansite Alchemilla Hospital and translator Toby Normoyle. It took seven years, but it’s finally here. This just goes to show the dedication some fans have for the franchises they love, and that can sometimes lead to incredibly cool projects like these. You can check out the Silent Hill Play Novel as an HTML Flash game that can be played online or as a download at their website.

[Interview] Director Todd Lincoln Talks About His Grounded Approach To ‘The Apparition’ And ‘The Fly’ Remake That Was Too Weird For Fox

Warner Bros. will release writer/director Todd Lincoln‘s The Apparition next week and I recently hopped on the phone with him to discuss the film. We wound up talking for quite a while and I found him to be a truly engaging and enthusiastic conversationalist, not only in regard to his own film, but in terms of his love for cinema in general. We discussed The Apparition at length as well as what happened to Hack/Slash and his re-imagining of The Fly.

In the film, “When frightening events start to occur in their home, young couple Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural (Tom Felton), but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force…

[Interview] Anessa Ramsey On Subverting Genre In ‘Rites Of Spring’

Writer/director Padraig Reynolds’ mixed genre kidnapping slasher/creature feature Rites of Spring plays kind of like a modern day From Dusk Till Dawn in that it totally switches gears midway through (not a spoiler, the film tips its hat to this early on). Of course, there aren’t any vampires and the film is much more serious than that early Tarantiono/Rodriguez collaboration. An early kidnapping segment really struck me with its unflinching brutality, as did some of the film’s more “sacrificial” moments. Star Anessa Ramsey (The Signal, YellowBrickRoad) is tied up and forced to hear (and later see the outcome of) that unnerving moment, which you’d think would be as bad as it gets for her character… until it gets much worse.

I recently hopped on the phone with Ramsey to talk about defining her character amongst the chaos of the film as well as what it was like to be forced to hang in a sacrificial barn for what seems like an awfully long period of time. Also? She gets to run through a corn field while being chased by a monster – always an iconic horror moment.

In the film, “A group of kidnappers abduct the daughter of a wealthy socialite and hide out in an abandoned school on the edge of town. But feelings of guilt soon overtake the kidnappers, dividing the group and putting their entire plan in jeopardy. The evening further spirals out of control when their poorly chosen hideout becomes a hunting ground for a mysterious creature that requires springtime ritualistic sacrifices.” The creature, “Wormface”, was designed by Aaron Sims (A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child, Wrong Turn, The Mist, I Am Legend, Clash of the Titans, The Thing).

IFC Midnight releases Rites Of Spring July 27 on VOD and in limited theaters. Head inside for the interview! READ MORE

Walker Pictures and Nishimura Eizo’s Dead Sushi, the latest horror/comedy from acclaimed Japanese director Noboru Iguchi, will World Premiere at Montreal’s prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival on July 22nd, followed shortly thereafter by its Asian Premiere at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan). Iguchi, best-known for his high-octane 2008 action/comedy The Machine Girl, has become an international sensation with jaw-dropping, boundary-pushing films such as RoboGeisha, Karate-Robo Zaborgar, and Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead.

We’ve scored and exclusive new clip from the film called “Flying Squid”, and it’s got a pretty high body count for only being a minute or so long. If you have yet to see a decapitation today, we’ve got you covered.

Dead Sushi, which stars 21-year-old martial arts prodigy Rina Takeda, “tells the tale of Keiko, the daughter of a legendary sushi chef, who runs away from home when his kung fu-like regimen becomes too severe. Finding work at a rural hot springs inn, she is ridiculed by the eccentric staff and guests, including the employees of a pharmaceutical firm there on a work vacation. But little do they know that a disgruntled former researcher has also come to the inn with a plan for revenge, using a serum he developed that can awaken the murderous instincts of ordinary sushi, turning it into bloodthirsty monsters! Keiko must use both her sushi training and her martial arts skills to save the others and defeat the flying killers.

[Interview] Transcript From Our Twitter Interview With ‘Buried’ And ‘Red Lights’ Director Rodrigo Cortes

In theaters July 13 from Millenium Entertainment is Red Lights, the new thriller from Buried director Rodrigo Cortes. Last week we conducted a Twitter interview with him (via @rodrigocor7es and @BDisgusting) to get his take on psychics, Robert De Niro and how Red Lights compares to Buried.

Having premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, “Veteran paranormal researchers Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) debunk fraudulent claims of ghost whispering, faith healing and other psychic phenomena by detecting what Matheson calls “red lights,” the subtle tricks behind every staged supernatural occurrence. But when the legendary blind psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro)comes out of retirement after 30 years, his once-fearless adversary Matheson warns Buckley to back off, fearing reprisal from the powerful Silver. Determined to discredit Silver, Buckley and his star student (Elizabeth Olsen) use every tool at their disposal to uncover the truth behind the charismatic, spoon-bending, mind reader. But Buckley is forced to reexamine his own core beliefs as his quest builds to a mind-blowing conclusion in this taut psychological thriller.

Exclusive Images From Eric England’s ‘Contracted’ And The First Word On His Next Film, ‘The Underneath’

Bloody Disgusting has landed the exclusive first images from Contracted, the new film from writer/director Eric England (Madison County, Roadside). The film just wrapped principal photography earlier this week and stars Njarra Townsend, Caroline Williams, Katie Stegeman, Charley Koontz, E-Kan Soong, Matt Mercer, Simon Barrett, Alice Macdonald, Jennifer Gonzalez, Ruben Pla and Lionel D. Carson.

In the film, also penned by England, “A young girl has a one-night stand with a random stranger and contracts, what she thinks is, a sexually-transmitted disease – but is actually something much worse.” Here’s our initial report on the project.

I recently spent some time on the set of the film, and while I can’t give away too much just yet – I can say that this movie most certainly does not shy away from its subject matter. I wouldn’t wish the sickness visited on Townsend’s character on anyone but, from what I saw at least, it felt like she was rising to the challenges of the role. My visit left me feeling queasy in all of the intended ways.

We also have the exclusive word on England’s next directing gig, The Underneath. In the film written by T.J. Cimfel (Crawl To Me), “After her husband goes missing in a tragic mining accident, a distraught woman joins the rescue crew only to discover a demonic presence hellbent on reaching the surface.

Writer/Director Brandon Cronenberg Discusses His Feature Film Debut, ‘Antiviral’

At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, audiences will be getting a dose of double Cronenberg. Not only is David Cronenberg’s surreal-looking Cosmopolis having its World Premiere but his son, Brandon will also be there showcasing his feature film debut, Antiviral. This sci-fi/horror tale is about a rogue medic played by Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class and The Last Exorcism) who sells sample viruses’ drawn from sick celebrities and sells it to their rabid fanbase. Brandon Cronenberg dabbles in the Body Horror subgenre; his dad’s bread and butter. Antiviral will be competing in the Un Certain Regard category which awards new talent.

I had the opportunity to chat with Brandon right before he made his way to France. I was also treated to several clips from the film. To say the least, I was extremely impressed by what I had witnessed. The footage had a wonderfully haunting quality that kept me glued to the screen. I’m particularly excited by what appears to be a starmaking turn from the utterly captivating Caleb Landry Jones. READ MORE

Exclusive New Clip From ’5 Souls’ Has Some Bad News For You!

Premiering at Cannes this year will be Outsider Pictures’ new thriller 5 Souls. The Brett Donowho (At Silver Falls) directed film stars Ian Bohen (Pearl Harbor), Steve Bacic, Kristina Anapau (Black Swan), Steven Schub (The Thirteenth Floor), Samaire Armstrong (“The OC”) and Allison McAtee (“NCIS”). I haven’t seen the film yet, but I always tend to think hospitals make great settings for horror movies.

In the film, “After falling into a coma after a routine doctors visit, Noah awakens to find a man sitting at the end of is bed. The good news is that he has come to kill him, and then there is the bad news…” This clip comes straight from that premise, it’s here that we first see Noah awake in the hospital to less than a warm welcome.

Be sure to check in tomorrow for my interview with Donowho, who has four directorial features going to Cannes this year!

Director Zal Batmanglij On Cults, Belief And The ‘Sound Of My Voice’

While my official review doesn’t hit until Friday, it’s safe to say that I pretty much love Sound Of My Voice. It’s a small, but very effective, thriller with some genuinely creepy moments. It also gives you a lot to think about and asks some interesting questions about the nature of belief itself – not necessarily religious belief (though it can be interpreted that way), but the mechanics behind what we accept as fact and reject as fiction.

Last week I sat down with Zal Batmanglij, the film’s director and co-writer, to talk about cults, the nature of belief and debunking, long (intense) scenes and crafting the film in general.

In the R-rated thriller from director Zal Batmanglij, “Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius), a couple and documentary filmmaking team, infiltrate a mysterious group led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie (Brit Marling). Intent on exposing her as a charlatan and freeing the followers from her grip, Peter and Lorna start to question their objective and each other as they unravel the secrets of Maggie’s underworld.

Sound Of My Voice opens in tomorrow, April 27th. I strongly urge you to seek it out. Head inside for the interview. READ MORE

Directors Adrián García Bogliano and Ramiro García Bogliano Talk ‘Penumbra’

5Penumbra042012 1024x435 Directors Adrián García Bogliano and Ramiro García Bogliano Talk Penumbra

On April 20th, IFC Midnight released Penumbra, nationwide on IFC Midnight Cable VOD and Digital Outlets (SundanceNOW, iTunes, Amazon Streaming, XBOX Zune, Playstation Unlimited). It’s also currently playing at the IFC Center in New York.

To that end, I recently conducted an email interview with Adrián García Bogliano and Ramiro García Bogliano regarding their South American horror outing and their approach to its unsettling imagery and suspense (among other things).

Combining stylistic elements of classic Polanski with a contemporary vision that rivals anyone working in horror today, the Bogliano brothers’ ‘Penumbra’ is a superbly realized South American horror slow-burner. Marga is a highly motivated, arrogant and successful business woman on assignment in Buenos Aires – a city she hate and whose people she loathes. While in the Argentina capital on a day the whole population is waiting to view a rare solar eclipse, she must also find a new tenant for her family’s decrepit apartment. Rapidly losing her patience waiting for one applicant, she runs into the mysterious Jorge lurking outside the front door of the place who informs her that he has a client willing to pay four times what she is asking in rent. There’s one catch – the paperwork must be signed immediately. As greedy Marga waits to complete the transaction, several of Jorge’s associates suspiciously appear at the apartment ready to strip the wallpaper. And what’s behind the decor signals a startling fate worse than death – or should that be life!

Get A Peek At ‘The Divide’ Blu-ray With This Exclusive Clip!

TheDivideHeader41512 Get A Peek At The Divide Blu ray With This Exclusive Clip!

Tomorrow, April 17th, Anchor Bay will release The Divide as a Blu-ray/DVD combo. The film is bleak as all get out, and I imagine many of you will be disturbed and engrossed by the depths many of its characters go to in order to eke out some kind of survival. Director Xavier Gens (Frontiers) does not shy away from dark places.

To that end, the clip we have actually takes place in the beginning of the film so it’s comparatively light-hearted (or as light-hearted as things get when you’re trapped in a basement after a nuclear blast). It also gives you a feel for what the interplay is like on the film’s commentary track as Xavier Gens, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia and Michael Ecklund riff off each other while discussing the film.

In this graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller starring Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Rosanna Arquette, Courtney B. Vance and Lauren German, “nine strangers—all tenants of a New York high rise apartment—escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, the group begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, and they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness, each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. While everyone in the bunker allows themselves to be overcome by desperation and lose their humanity, one survivor holds onto a thin chance for escape even with no promise of salvation on the outside.
