[Book Review] Highly Acclaimed ‘The Demonologist’ Possessed By Silly Demon Stuff

Since its publication earlier this month, Andrew Pyper’s The Demonologist has garnered mad praise from both fiction bloggers and fellow genre authors. His trim little novel––about a college professor convinced that a demon has abducted his daughter––has been repeatedly heralded as one of the more frightening reads to come down the pike. And while it has its moments, be warned, the potency of the scares may depend on the reader’s willingness to go along with a few moments of Satanic silliness.

Canadian author Pyper has been a bestselling novelist for years (Lost Girls, The Killing Circle, The Wildfire Season), but he has yet to become a household name here in the States. Perhaps the building buzz behind The Demonologist will be enough to shove him face-first into the horror limelight.

The Demonologist was released by Simon and Schuster on March 5. Read on for the full review. READ MORE

The currently untitled show, “centers on Kyle Barnes, who has been plagued by possession since he was a child. Now an adult, he embarks on a spiritual journey to find answers but what he uncovers could mean the end of life on Earth as we know it.

Kirkman said in a statement, ““Sharon Tal Yguado and the entire team at Fox International Channels have been instrumental in making The Walking Dead the worldwide success that it has become. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to continue working with this forward-thinking and extremely talented group.

I’m not sure about you, but aren’t exorcism movies enough of a slow burn? I sure hope they don’t dial back the pace even more to make it fit for TV.

[OMFG] Jamaican High School Closed After “Demonic Possession”

Some hilarious news was just sent to us by “Peter Pumpkin Eater” who caught wind of an article in the Jamaican Star that alleges that classes ended prematurely at a Corporate Area high school last Thursday following reports that there were demons at the institution, one of which possessed a female student.

“The demon revealed himself and discouraged other students from praying for the possessed girl warning them that if they disobeyed he would leave the girl’s body and enter theirs instead,” the magazine reported.

“It was also understood that fear hung over the institution forcing the school’s administration to seek the assistance of a special prayer team that specialises in demon possession. The prayer team is from a nearby church. When the team arrived, they were reportedly greeted by a group of Baptist pastors who were eager to lend their assistance to rid the school of the demons. Subsequently, the school’s administration summoned students to a general prayer assembly feeling confident that the scare had ended but they were in for a surprise.

The pastors said dem feel the evil spirit all over the school so they called the school population to an assembly. In the middle of assembly, suddenly out of the ceiling, a bird’s head, cut off from the bird, drop down inna the middle of the assembly. It was chaos after that,‘ a source who witnessed the incident said.

The school’s vice-principal was reluctant to elaborate on what transpired at the school on the day of the incident and downplayed it as something minor. ‘That’s something at the school. I’m not going to disclose what took place. Whatever took place was not something drastic. Whoever told you should have given all the details,‘ she said.”

Why wasn’t my school this interesting?!

[BD Review] Jess Franco’s ‘Exorcism’ Brings the Black Mass to Blu-ray

Review by Patrick Cooper

Jess Franco is an iconoclast of European trash who has made about a zillion films so far in his lifetime. Nearly all of them have heavy doses of eroticism and light-horror thrown in, with mixed results. He’s garnered a cult following over the years and while he may not be the most capable director in the world, there’s no denying his enthusiasm for filmmaking and naked women.

Made during Franco’s creative eruption of the 1970s (he made over 50 films in that decade alone), Exorcism is a tale of pseudo-Satanism filled with loads of sex, sleaze, and stabbings. Set in the underground world of Parisian sadomasochist performance art, the film stars Franco’s exhibitionist muse and late wife, Lina Romay. The very first shot of the film is Romay tied to a cross, being whipped and having blood smeared on her by a blonde. It’s pretty much the antithesis of an opening establishment shot from a helicopter. A crowd of elderly creeps watches this whole bloody spectacle, apparently getting their rocks off.

Turns out it’s just some S&M performance art and Anne (Romay) does this all the time. She’s an assistant or an intern or something at “Garter and Dagger” magazine and her and the editor Raymond (Pierre Taylou) stage these phony torture sex shows for material. Sometimes the audience participates and that’s when things get real gross.

Franco plays Mathis, a former priest who now writes short stories for “Garter and Dagger.” He was kicked out of the church for being too extreme in his devotion to the nastier parts of the Old Testament. One day at the office he covertly overhears Raymond and Anne talking about a black mass they’re going to be having. It’s just one of their slimy humpfests where people pretend to be sacrificed, but in Mathis’ twisted mind he believes they’re planning a legit occult ceremony for the dark lord himself. Mathis dons his priest’s robes again and starts stalking and killing everyone involved in the black mass. Every swinger, slut, and mustached Satanist falls under Mathis’ holy blade.

Franco plays a great creep. He spends most of the film peeping out his window into Anne’s loveden across the street, but when he gets down to abducting and “exorcising” people (stabbing them) he’s a menacing little sicko. There’s only one scene of impressively realistic looking gore. The rest of the killings are more about naked women screaming than any kind of real horror. None of the nudity is erotic and I found myself fast-forwarding some of the time devoted to writhing naked bodies. These scenes are more boring than anything else.

If you want to skip the sleaze and get down to the film’s more horror-influenced elements, Kino Lorber’s Redemption Films has included the alternate cut of the film, called Demoniac. This cut is nearly 30 minutes shorter than Exorcism and features none of the lengthy sex scenes. Franco also reshot some of the expository scenes for this cut, this time with everyone wearing clothes. Both cuts of the film sadly contain Franco’s novice camerawork and total lack of depth in both character and story.

The final minute of the film is completely baffling and hilarious. The tone (whatever minute trace of tone there was) completely changes to a buddy-cop film. The two detectives working the Mathis murders have a laugh and one of them delivers a line of dialogue resembling “You’re alright with me, rookie.” It’s amazing and so out of place and it might be the only entertaining moment of the film.

If you’re a fan of ‘70s sleaze for the helluva it then you’re going to love Exorcism. If you savor character, story, and skilled camerawork, stay far, far, away from this one.

A/V
Exorcism probably looked grungy from the start and on Redemption Film’s Blu-ray release there are loads of scratches, specks, and frequent fluctuations in brightness. The 1080p transfer doesn’t clear up any of these hiccups. Franco didn’t concern himself with petty annoyances like focusing the camera, so nothing looks sharp. Nothing seems to have been digitally corrected, which some people might dig. The only audio track is a 2.0 mix with English dubbing. The volume fluctuates throughout the film but at least the eerie soundtrack sounds nice.

Special Features
Trailers for Franco’s Exorcism, The Nude Vampire, The Rape of the Vampire, Female Vampire, and Requiem for a Vampire.

Demoniac – a 69 minute, less explicit cut of the film.

[Blu-ray Review] The Lifeless ‘Devil Inside’

Bland, but not awful.

That’s really the best way to explain almost everything about William Bell’s The Devil Inside, an exorcism film that’s a little too safe and way too familiar. At no point does Matthew Peterman and Bell’s script break the mold and do anything fresh, new or outside of the box; that is, until the very last second, when they decide to do absolutely nothing at all and abruptly end the movie, leaving everyone with blue balls and making it one of the worst studio horror films ever in one fell swoop! New Exorcism Movie Hopefully Cut From A Different ‘Cloth’

TheClothLand12512 New Exorcism Movie Hopefully Cut From A Different Cloth

There’s a new exorcism movie afoot. And after The Devil Inside I’d say The Cloth has nowhere to go but up! It’s certainly got a better cast!

Eric Roberts, Danny Trejo, Rachele Brooke Smith, Kyler Willett and Steven Brand star in the film. No one in Devil Inside can even begin to chew scenery like Roberts and Trejo. Justin Price wrote and directed the film which recently wrapped production.

The film, “is a thriller centered on a secret organization formed by the Catholic Church to counteract the rising cases of demonic possessions across the country. With the arrival of the Devil’s General Kasdeya on earth, the members of the Cloth have only seven days to stop the crossover of the ultimate evil into our realm. To stop Beelzebub’s arrival, their mission depends on Jason (Kyler Willett), a young godless man, to lead the next generation of Cloth members before the Devil and his armies walk the earth.

[BD Review] ‘The Devil Inside’ Vs. Bloody Staff, Film Could Top $30 Million

33devilinsidehiresgalery010212 [BD Review] The Devil Inside Vs. Bloody Staff, Film Could Top $30 Million

I wasn’t anticipating the BD staff being so overtly excited for The Devil Inside, and with that I present to you three more reviews (one being a video review) for the found footage exorcism film that’s breaking the bank. Two take Evan Dickson’s corner, while one thought it was fantastic. Where do you stand? write your own review here.

In addition, according to THR, the flick is scaring up massive business at the domestic box office, where it’s now on course to open as high as $30 million. This is a huge change from the original numbers. Heading into the weekend, Paramount indicated that Devil Inside would open in the $8 million to $10 million range, but that number has been revised upward in light of the film’s midnight performance Thursday night, followed by strong matinee business. Devil Inside earned $2 million in its midnight runs.

Get over it people, found footage horror is here to stay (and I’m OK with that). Now read on for a trilogy of new reviews! READ MORE

2devilinsidehiresgalery010212 [BD Review] The Devil Inside Carries Scares, Yet Frustrating Conclusion

Paramount Insurge’s found footage exorcism flick The Devil Inside is now in theaters everywhere. Evan Dickson attended the premiere in Hollywood to bring you one of the first official reviews of the completed feature, explaining that it’s kind of OK until the third act; the ending, well, it’s gonna piss a lot of people off.

While there’s enough scares, general creepiness and gore to give it a soft recommend to those hard up for a horror fix, the fact that it doesn’t fully function as a movie can’t be overlooked. Also, it has no third act. So if you’re into things like satisfying resolutions you might want to give this one a pass.

Reverend Bob Larson Has Performed Over 15,000 Exorcisms And Thinks You Should See The Devil Inside!

Paramount’s The Devil Inside is just about to hit theaters and while I haven’t seen it yet – I’ve talked to a very experienced person who has.

Reverend Bob Larson has been pretty busy the past 30 years. He claims to have performed over 15,000 exorcisms during that time. More than one a day on average. I had the chance to speak with him earlier this week about his “real-life” experiences and how the movies stack up against them. Particularly The Devil Inside.

While I’m not entirely sure I believe in demonic possession myself, Larson certainly claims to and was willing to speak at length about it.

Quarterman122611 [Interview] The Devil Inside Star Simon Quarterman Talks Exorcism Schools, Rewarding The Audience And Intelligent Horror Films!

Paramount’s The Devil Inside has hit a certain saturation point (at least in Los Angeles) with its eerie billboards and provocative trailers. But the scope of the film apparently stretches out beyond the snippets we’ve been given. I recently hopped on the phone with Simon Quarterman, who plays Ben in the film, to get an idea of how this film sizes up against other recent exorcism movies (and found footage films in general). A Kinda Meh The Devil Inside Holiday Greeting

Paramount Insurge has given MTV a kinda stupid holiday greeting card for Brent Bell’s The Devil Inside, their exorcism flick opening in theaters January 6, 2012.
