Director Nicholas McCarthy Ties Up Loose Ends On ‘The Pact’

If you haven’t watched The Pact, you may want to skip this until you do. SPOILERS FOLLOW.

Otherwise: I disagreed with some of the more critical reviews out on The Pact. I found it, above all imperfections, to be an effective, well executed chiller. After its recent DVD release, however, several people I’d chatted with were expressing a similar point of view, and confusion. “It was creepy as F—, but what the hell was with the ending?” Usually I’m pretty good at figuring out these subtleties, but after some hard thought, I had to agree – while a couple of the shock sequences certainly took my breath away, the film left me with some questions that I couldn’t answer.

What was “the pact”?
What was with the blue eye/green eye – was there a meaning behind that?
Was Judas still alive?

I got in touch with the film’s director, Nicholas McCarthy, and asked him directly. It opened up a great conversation about the head-in-the-curtain hotel scene, some films that inspired these moments, and above all, some very honest and direct answers to the questions left behind. READ MORE

Without a doubt, one of the most famous film demons is Pazuzu, otherwise known to the masses as Captain Howdy, the little punk that possessed Linda Blair in The Exorcist. That nasty bugger has caused nightmares ever since appearing on the screen in 1973 and has wormed his way into mass culture, from Futurama to Final Fantasy.

Now, someone has taken Pazuzu and recreated the classic Queen album cover for Queen II, which was immortalized in the music video for “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Check it out below! READ MORE

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! So in addition to your ranking, let us know which films should make the cut! Should newer fan favorites like Frozen or The Devil’s Rejects be included? Should we go back and pick up a few more old-school slashers? You’re shaping the Final 20! Discuss and vote and I’ll tally it up!

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! Good job guys! There were some great ones I’m not sure I could legally post on the front page!

1. We pick a still from a movie. It’s included after the jump. You head to the comments section and submit your best one-liners, zingers, pathos riddled couplets etc…

2. You can enter as many times as you like and submit as many captions as you want, but each caption must be in a separate comment. Otherwise it will be too hard to tell where one caption ends and the other begins. Your entries can be posted anytime during the first five days after the still is announced (you don’t want to submit your winning zinger after we’ve picked the winner). Also any racist, sexist, homophobic or generally hateful jokes will be disqualified. You don’t have to be insanely PC – just use your best judgement.

Speaking of William Friedkin, if you’re a fan of his film The Exorcist and want to see how the stage play stacks up in terms of the book’s adaptation – you might want to head down to The Geffen Playhouse between July 3rd and August 12th. Interestingly enough it stars Brooke Shields (The Blue Lagoon, Midnight Meat Train) as Chris MacNeil and newcomer Emily Yetter as

There’s a new exorcism movie afoot. And after The Devil Inside I’d say The Cloth has nowhere to go but up! It’s certainly got a better cast!

Eric Roberts, Danny Trejo, Rachele Brooke Smith, Kyler Willett and Steven Brand star in the film. No one in Devil Inside can even begin to chew scenery like Roberts and Trejo. Justin Price wrote and directed the film which recently wrapped production.

The film, “is a thriller centered on a secret organization formed by the Catholic Church to counteract the rising cases of demonic possessions across the country. With the arrival of the Devil’s General Kasdeya on earth, the members of the Cloth have only seven days to stop the crossover of the ultimate evil into our realm. To stop Beelzebub’s arrival, their mission depends on Jason (Kyler Willett), a young godless man, to lead the next generation of Cloth members before the Devil and his armies walk the earth.”

Alternate Ending on ‘The Rite’ Home Video Release

Warner Home Video has announced DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo releases of The Rite (review) which stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciarán Hinds, and Rutger Hauer.

Each will be available to own from May 17th. DVD Active reports that the only extra material on the DVD release will be additional scenes. The Blu-ray/DVD Combo release will include those scenes, plus a chilling alternate ending, a featurette (“The Rite: Soldier of God”), and a digital copy of the film.

“The Rite follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While he’s in Rome, Michael meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith, uncovering the devil’s reach even to one of the holiest places on Earth.”

I want to see another cool exorcism flick, I really do. I just really doubt anything will ever come close to The Exorcist. Maybe it was because Reagan was a young girl or because the effects were outstanding, but I would never put my money on a new studio film. With that said, I still sit in anticipation of every single exorcism-inspired film in hopes that it’ll give me a fraction of fright that William Friedkin’s 1973 classic did. On January 28th Warner Bros. will release The Rite, Mikael Hafstrom’s “true story” spin on the subgenre that stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, and Ciaran Hinds. The film follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. Lionsgate Home Entertainment announced a January 4 DVD/ Blu-ray and On Demand release for the Eli Roth-produced chiller The Last Exorcism. Sure, the extra features sounded interesting enough, but what came next is what I found truly interesting. Roth responded to the press release via Twitter where he explained that Lionsgate was having some issues with the home vide process — and that they are including TWO protection prayers on the release.
