‘Hoax Hunters’ Begins The Long Road To The Screen

I haven’t read this book so I feel a little out of my wheelhouse in regard to how excite I should be, but Producer Jeff Krelitz and of Quality Transmedia has optioned the screen rights to Image Comics’ Hoax Hunters, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The book centers around “a group of paranormal investigators who debunk mysteries for a TV show called Hoax Hunters. But in reality, the hunters are working hard to cover up and keep the world’s dark forces secret.” It was created by Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley.

It seems like the idea at this point is to find a screenwriter to whip up a script before heading out to a studio to set up the project. Hoax Hunters is intended to be a feature film. Meanwhile, our Comics section has quite a bit of “Hoax Hunters” coverage here!

Lonmonster chiming in here. I’ve been following the “Hoax Hunters” comic series from day one, and this is absolutely a project you should be stoked for. It’s a wild series that explores bizarre cryptids and conspiracy theories all while pointing out the ridiculous nature of reality television. If done properly, this has potential to be a solid tongue in cheek horror flick. You can read the first issue for free over at ComiXology.

10 Horror Games That Deserve Sequels!

I wish every horror game I enjoyed got a sequel. Even games like BioShock, which don’t really need sequels. If I like it, I usually want more of it, even if it’s only to see where a developer can take their series. Unfortunately, while the slate of releases might suggest otherwise (Black Ops II, Halo 4, Assassin’s Creed III, Resident Evil 6, etc.) it’s difficult for a game to get a sequel, especially in the midst of a new generation of consoles. The problem is studios need to make money, and unless the game has a substantial following or is accessible to a wide audience, potential for a sequel isn’t great.

If you’re reading this, then you’re probably a fan of the horror genre, so you’re undoubtedly aware that when it comes to accessibility, the horror genre (in video games, at least) isn’t exactly known for being welcoming to newcomers. Here are ten games that I think could actually sell well, if they’re given the second chance they deserve.

10 Video Games That Were Unintentionally Terrifying

There are some who say the horror genre is dying, or that it’s lost its mainstream appeal as video games continue to force their way into the pantheon of “accepted” forms of entertainment, right alongside music and films. I say that’s a load of crap. The horror genre isn’t dying, we’re just not recognizing many games that are actually far more terrifying than the scariest Silent Hill or Fatal Frame could ever hope to be. Here are ten games that are supposedly fun, quirky, or in some cases, adorable, when they’re actually horrifying.

The 10 Scariest Video Game Music Tracks

Written by Brittany Vincent

It’s easy to escape disturbing imagery. You just close your eyes. In an instant, the offending blight on your vision disappears. Traces may well remain in the shelter of your eyelids, but for the moment you’re in the clear. A haunting melody, however, lingers with you long after you scramble to turn down the volume. Like a bright, cheery pop song on the radio that worms its way into your psyche, so too do the unsettling notes wafting from your speakers. Dissonant chords that seep into your very being and hallucinatory auditory effects play important roles in horror, as you’re no doubt already aware. After all, aren’t the things you hear much scarier than the things you’re seeing in the dark?

It’s easier to explain away bizarre visuals, but much harder to explain away what you’ve heard. That’s why music is such a powerful tool when it comes to setting an appropriate mood, in horror and otherwise. Even when you think you’re safe from the chills that run down your spine after being forced to listen to some painfully atmospheric soundtrack cuts, a few key notes arise in the back of your mind to plague you once again. But some are definitely a little worse than others. Here are ten genuinely disturbing cuts from various games, horror and otherwise, that you might want to listen to with the lights on, or chase with some Carly Rae Jepsen. READ MORE

10 Mistakes That Nearly Ruined Otherwise Great Horror Games

Have you ever had that moment where you’re blissfully mowing down Necromorphs with your plasma cutter or literally mowing down zombies in Dead Rising, only to come across that part of the game that almost ruins everything? Pretty much every game has it, but that doesn’t lessen the blow when you finally find it. It’s like when someone violently shakes you while you’re sleeping, ruining the amazing dream you were having about that saucy minx who works at the Starbucks near your work. You go there every day–even if you don’t want a coffee–just to see their face. If you’re feeling extra brave you might pretend to forget your usual order, just to see if they remember you. Then when they aren’t there or they don’t remember you, you’re struck by a wave of sadness that only a Mountain Dew Pitch Black and a hug from TJ can soothe. Oh, and you should definitely check out the ten games that came close to ruining everything after the break. READ MORE

‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Trailer Analysis: What The Hell?

Anyone who’s stuck with the series of films that call themselves Resident Evil despite having really no connection with the games at this point outside of some familiar characters and the Umbrella Corporation is fully aware that Retribution is almost definitely going to be more of the same. I have no problem admitting that I actually enjoy watching the movies for their mindless action and spectacle. All I need to do to prepare for a Resident Evil movie night is turn off my brain, get real comfy and press play. My ability to enjoy the series for what it is changed pretty drastically with the last flick, Afterlife, a movie that took the nonsensical story and awful acting to almost impressive levels of stupid. If the movies stay on track, Retribution is very likely to be the worst movie so far. Head past the break for a critical, thought-provoking analysis of the film’s new trailer (who am I kidding? I’m only going to talk about chainsaws and explosions).

Our Premature Evaluation of Silent Hill Book of Memories

For the first time in the series’ history, Silent Hill is diving pyramid head first into the world of multiplayer gaming with the PS Vita exclusive Book of Memories. This is a serious gamble since this multiplayer isn’t just tacked on, it’s actually a main focus of the game. This means if the multiplayer sucks, then the main selling point is gone. It was originally planned to release near Downpour and the HD Collection in March, but Konami pulled it from the schedule at the very last second to the end of May. This could be a good thing because at the very least it’s getting some extra time for added spit and polish. Read on to find out what TJ and I think of this ambitious game’s chances of success.

[Special Feature] 11 Things Horror Movies Have Taught Me!

I recently realized something about myself that actually scares me a little bit. I don’t know if it’s because I watch too many movies — which I’m positive I do — or perhaps I didn’t pay enough attention in school so my mind is so desperate for knowledge that it’s actively seeking out information from unreliable sources, but a startling majority of what I know is stuff I’ve “learned” from movies. To me, an impromptu dance number can spring up at literally any second, you can be knocked unconscious and wake up several hours later without any trauma to your brain, and should you narrowly escape a massive explosion, all you have to do is get up and shrug it off.

So there’s a very good chance that no less than 80% of what I know is information I gleaned from films, but add to this my near obsessive love for horror films, and it’s a safe bet that roughly half of my accumulated life knowledge was taught to me by the likes of Freddy, Jason, Michael, and friends. Also, Freddy, Jason, Michael, and friends is a fantastic name for a horror sitcom. Head past the break so I can share my knowledge with you. Come on, it’ll be a learning experience for us all. Duel to the Death: Resident Evil vs. Dead Space

Two of the biggest players in the action/horror genre are Dead Space and Resident Evil. One’s been around for the better part of two decades and inspired dozens of games, the other’s has, in a quarter of that time, managed to find a near-perfect balance between action and horror, and proved that a horror game doesn’t have to control poorly to be scary.

Duel2 Duel to the Death: Resident Evil vs. Dead Space

At first, this might not look like the fairest of fights. I mean, how do you compare two franchises when one of them has outsold the other by tens of millions of units, spawned dozens of installments, and inspired a series of successful films? Easy. Our Premature Evaluation of Resident Evil 6

It finally happened. Resident Evil 6 was announced last month, sending fans of the series in a frenzy. Some are against it, saying it still isn’t true to the series’ survival horror roots, while others praise the long awaited return of zombies. Capcom has said the upcoming game will have a bigger focus on horror, while also telling us they’re focusing more on action so they can try and get some of Call of Duty’s tens of millions of fans. That last part is particularly terrifying for most fans of the franchise, but whether it means old school Resident Evil has gone the way of the Dodo is something we won’t know until the game releases this November.

[BEST & WORST 11] Mr. Disgustings List of the Best Horror Films of 2011!

Those of you following Bloody Disgusting for the better part of the decade will know that my list is always dominated by independent/festival features, which is pretty telling about the crop of films screened throughout the year. From my perspective, the indie filmmaker is one of passion, intensity, and that of no barriers; (generally) they have no rules and nobody creeping over their shoulder telling them what to do. The result is staggering when compared to the average, bland, faceless and soulless genre flicks released by studios. (Note: some of the below films are listed as released by a major studio, although, they were actually acquired at a film festival by said studio for release in 2012.)

And speaking of major studios, there are a few that actually broke through the barrier and blew my mind; such the case with Twentieth Century Fox who has probably made my top 10 list for the first time in, well, ever.

Still, the most glaring oddity is the addition of both a direct-to-disc release and a television series, which is also probably the first time in years that either has made my list.

I digress… enough with the banter, below you’ll find the crop of the best horror of 2011. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST 11] Mr. Disgustings List of the Worst Horror Films of 2011!

This year totally sucked, but in all honesty it wasn’t that bad. Usually my “worst of” list requires me to thin out my selections and dump a handful under “dishonorable mentions.” Even looking back through my selections I don’t feel a burning sensation inside, at least not until I get to the bottom of the list. The fact is, this year was loaded with mediocre horror, with a few cinematic abortions trickled in here and there. I think the most disappointing aspect of the following list is that I was forced to include two television series, which is thankfully canceled out by FX’s mind-bogglingly incredible “American Horror Story”.

But when it comes to the big screen, I actually pondered the possibility of making it just a special feature on the “single worst film of 2011″. One flick is such a soulless, putrid piece of garbage that it deserves to be kicked while it’s down.

I had to stop myself, because that’s just mean-spirited (and it’s the holidays!), so without further adieu you’ll find my list of the worst horror in 2011. Let 2012 be better, please. READ MORE

Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough.

So tough, in fact, that it’s very rarely done properly anymore. And look, I know that studio mandates can wreck a poster (floating heads etc…) just as much as a bad artist can – but a wrecked poster is a wrecked poster.

Posters, when done right, are an art form. Sure, they’re advertisements, but they’re also such a great artistic challenge. Representing the identity of a movie – and getting people in the door – with a single image? That’s tough.

Making it even tougher these days are mandates from studios to their marketing departments to emphasize their perception of the film’s commercial assets (stars, animals, Katherine Heigl sometimes) rather than the film itself.

Here’s a gaggle of posters that got it right this year. Some of them are for great films and some are the most dangerous breed of all – great posters for terrible films. READ MORE

Dickson121511 [BEST & WORST 11] Evan Dicksons 5 Worst Moments In Horror 2011!

Oh hey, I didn’t see you there!

I came to the conclusion that writing a list of the worst films of the year would not be an appropriate way to quantify the amount of pain some of the weaker entries in the genre have caused me this year.

So if we’re talking damages and therapy bills, I figure life comes down to handful of formative moments. Some of these moments are beautiful and grand, others are painful and wretched. For example, there are numerous films this year that would have made my “Top Worst” list – except that many of them in their entirety aren’t as painful as one single second of ‘Creature’. I also don’t want to kick a bunch of poor indie movies while they’re down – no one’s gonna see them anyway. Better to stick to the wide releases.

Dickson121511 [BEST & WORST 11] Evan Dicksons List Of The 6 Best Horror Films of 2011!

Oh hey, I didn’t see you there!

Guys, I had a hard time with my year-end “best-of” list. It’s not that I didn’t see enough horror movies that I loved enough this year to make the cut (though unfortunately that’s almost true). No, it’s just that there are six movies vying for pole position that all appeal to me in very different ways.

Sure, I know that some films are “better” than others. There’s one film on here that I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it got some Oscar love. The remaining five? Well, I’d be shocked if they did. Would I place The Innkeepers above Martha Marcy Mary Marlene? No. But depending on the type of thrills and scares you’re into it might be a much better fit. Are either one of them as kinetic, chaotic and invigorating as You’re Next!? Nope. But that’s what makes horror great! It’s a surprisingly diverse genre with more to offer than most casual viewers give it credit for.

Are these my absolute six favorite films of the year? Well, almost all of them would be in my overall Top Ten along with The Descendants and Young Adult. But we’re not here to talk about those films, so hit the jump for my favorite horror (ish) films of 2011*. READ MORE

Even if the movie it’s advertising isn’t so great (though many of the trailers on this list are for great films) an effective teaser can often be an inspiring piece of work that you watch again and again.

While I only feel that way about a few trailers every year – and not everything on this list elicits that kind of reaction from me – there’s also something to be said for the rare clip that fully and honestly embraces the movie it’s selling. Especially if that movie’s great (and dangerously if that movie’s bad).

Most of these are trailers for films so bad there’s simply no way to cull two minutes of footage from them and make them look good. Though many of them try, they fail and end up as middling pieces of marketing.

Then there are the ones who seem to know just how bad the film is, as if the guy cutting the trailer realized that people were going to waste actual money to see this thing if he did his job properly and “saved the film”.

This dude – let’s call him “Hero” – looks like he cut some of these teasers, valiantly laying his job on the line to tell us to avoid these movies.

[BEST & WORST '11] David Harley’s List of the Best Horror Films of 2011!

[BEST & WORST 11] David Harleys List of the Best Horror Films of 2011!

Like my worst-of list, my best-of compilation was really easy to put together. There was quite a bit I liked this year and, unfortunately, six of the films below haven’t been released stateside yet – The Divide and Kill List are around the corner, though. Every year, I toy with the idea of not including unreleased films because it leaves little room for discussion once it’s posted, but in the end, I just wouldn’t be happy with the list- for purely selfish reasons, it’s a little easier to do it like this since I wouldn’t have to hold off on (and possibly forget to use since I saw it so long ago) films like The Loved Ones, which I used last year.

Out of the thirteen films on this list (including three honorable mentions), more than half are foreign, six are performed in a foreign language (seven if you count hood slang), one received a perfect score from me, and zero are remakes, sequels, reboots, or prequels. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '11] David Harley’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2011!

[BEST & WORST 11] David Harleys List of the Worst Horror Films of 2011!

As far as the genre goes, there were a lot more films that I found to be mediocre than ones that I outright hated, which made compiling this list extremely easy. If I were to generalize 2011, I’d say the biggest problem was that a lot of the films were too long. Many of them could’ve benefitted from being 20 minutes shorter, or even just being a short rather than feature-length. Then, of course, there are others that just simply shouldn’t have been made – I’m still having nightmares about Peter Sarsgaard’s giant deformed head in Green Lantern. Bereavement and Hellraiser: Revelations were disqualified because I couldn’t sit through more than 20 minutes of either – life is too short, guys.

Out of the ten films on my worst-of list (plus three horrible mentions), five are sequels or prequels (which shouldn’t surprise anyone), three were directed by once prominent names in horror, one is an abomination of a script that was pretty good once upon a time, and all of them are hard to sit through. Not counting the horrible mentions, I would award each film one skull, putting them all on an even playing field. Putting them in sequential order was extremely difficult and even though I’m happy with my final decision, just remember: I hate them all equally (for different reasons)! READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '11] The 5 Best Performances of the Year!

Dickson121511 [BEST & WORST 11] The 5 Best Performances of the Year!

Oh hey, I didn’t see you there!

When it came time for me to write this list I was utterly surprised by the choices I was making. I saw a lot of great films this year, horror and non-horror alike, but there was a certain freedom in limiting myself to films that (more or less) fit in the horror genre. For instance, I loved George Clooney in The Descendants and I thought Charlize Theron was pitch perfect in Young Adult. But those are great performances that are already going to make almost every list out there.

So by shaking off the burdens of consensus (whether or not I largely agree with it), I was able to focus almost solely on roles that surprised me. There’s a couple of performers included that I would have never in a million years considered putting on any list – good or bad – even just a couple of weeks ago. It was such a great pleasure to strip away my own expectations and simply write about what performances made me happy – for various reasons. I guarantee that there’s only one in here that has a chance in hell of overlapping with the Academy.

[BEST & WORST '11] Micah’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2011!

[BEST & WORST 11] Micahs List of the Worst Horror Films of 2011!

Horror movies can be outstanding in the right hands (Kubrick, Scott, Polanski). And can also be a lot of fun if done right (Raimi, Jackson). These picks have none of those qualities.

Instead, the flicks I’ve chosen are a wasteland of disappointment and opportunity lost. It goes to show that there are a lot of ways to screw up a film and that there are always individuals / studios out there willing to do just that. The films range from a cringe-inducing horror comedy based on a solidly hilarious comic, an angst-ridden bastardization of a famous fairy tale, to a mind-boggling suckfest that might be the worst film of the decade so far. These five films should exercise the right to remain silent (and unseen)…forever. READ MORE
