Hitting theaters sometime in 2013 will be Thirteen, a new horror film from Universal, Strike Entertainment and Energy Entertainment.
Ostensibly it’s supposed to be in the Flatliners mold, but I’m not sure how a found-footage possession film can really compare. We’ll see soon enough though!
Per Variety, “Universal has pre-emptively bought ‘Thirteen,’ a spec by Benjamin Magid, and set it up with Uni-based Strike Entetrainment and Brooklyn Weaver at Energy Entertainment.
‘Thirteen’ centers on possession and is understood to utilize a mixture of found-footage point of views. The story is reminiscent of 1990′s ‘Flatliners’, which starred Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland as medical school students experimenting with the line between life and death.
Magid penned ‘Pan’, a supernatural take on J.M. Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’, which is scheduled to go into production later this year with Chris Tuffin, Renee Tab and Weaver producing and Ben Hibon directing.”
It doesn’t sound immediately off the wall interesting, but I suppose there’s always room to be pleasantly surprised. READ MORE
Open Road Films and Liddell Entertainment have released yet another ho-hum look at Silent House (review), their horror thriller starring talented newcomer Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) and co-directed by filmmaking duo Chris Kentis and Laura Lau (Open Water). The image displays yet another look at Olsen (I know it’s hard to show anything else, considering most of the movie consists of Olsen walking around a house), only it looks like a low resolution screengrab. Come on guys! Thankfully, the trailer is beyond badass. I seriously cannot wait until March 9. How many of you guys plan on checking it out? Have you seen the original?
“ ‘Silent House’ is a uniquely unsettling horror thriller starring Elizabeth Olsen as Sarah, a young woman who finds herself sealed inside her family’s secluded lake house. With no contact to the outside world, and no way out, panic turns to terror as events become increasingly ominous in and around the house.”
The screenplay was written by Laura Lau and based on the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda, written by Oscar Estevez. READ MORE
Leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne) has joined forces with Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien vs Predator, Event Horizons, Resident Evil) and Jeremy Bolt to develop a new one-hour psychological thriller series for television, “The Reel”. The series spec was brought to eOne by talented first-time writer Adam D’Alba.
In this “found footage” series,” a young documentarian searches for evidence of the supernatural. His first case concerns the mysterious last days of two teenagers and a serial killer, known as the Mirror Mask Killer, who uses various forms of psychological torment to exact bloody vengeance on its victims.“It combines supernatural shocks in a case-per-week format that leads viewers through a season-long mystery. We’ve been told exclusively that Gulliver’s Travels, Monsters vs Aliens and Shark Tale director Rob Letterman is getting behind the camera for Universal Pictures’ new supernatural horror, Paranormalists.
SYFY is producing the project that’s “loosely based on” their hit show “Ghost Hunters.” It’s a found footage project that’s actually pretty generic sounding. It’s said to follow a group of stoner kids that claim to rid haunted houses of ghosts and poltergeists, only they’re just ripping off a slew of gullible individuals. In an obvious turn of events, they end up in a house that’s actually haunted.
It sounds pretty bland and generic to me, what do you think? READ MORE

New Films International has now released six character posters for their AFM title The Levenger Tapes, which comes from director Mark Edwin Robinson, and stars Johanna Braddy, Lili Mirojnick, Morgan Krantz and Chris Mulkey. The art has all been pretty good, now I’m curious to see a trailer.
“Detectives in a remote town pore through every frame of a troubling tape to find the whereabouts of 3 missing college students. The chilling footage becomes more and more disturbing when the students come upon the bloody dress of an 8-year-old girl in the secluded wilderness, and take it upon themselves to find her. Linking the case of the missing girl and the missing students together, the detectives race to piece enough information together to find them alive.” READ MORE
It was recently announced that Deon Taylor, the man behind Chain Letter, will direct and produce horror pic Akuma for his newly minted Hidden Empire Film Group label.
Screen Media Films has secured worldwide distribution rights and is planning a U.S. theatrical release next fall. We landed some early sales art at the ongoing AFM that’s a scream. Above you’ll find a promo trailer that features NO actual footage from movie.
“The movie follows a young Japanese woman looking to put her life back together after a recent tragedy. As she pushes hard to overcome her problems she realizes that she’s fighting something very dark.”
Taylor previously said Akuma (Japanese for demon) is a mix between Paranormal Activity and The Exorcist. (How original.) He will use a handheld style of shooting.
Taylor wrote the screenplay with Blayne Weaver and Joe Bockol.
The film will be shot in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Japan and San Francisco. Shooting’s scheduled to begin November 10, although no cast has been announced. READ MORE

Buried director Rodgrigo Cortes takes on writing duties for the previous announced Emergo, a haunted house flick directed by Carles Torrens. Gearing up for AFM we got our hands on new plot details that are probably overhyping the film.
“Shot entirely in English, ‘Emergo’ is the descendant of ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Rec,’ but breaks away from tradition by revolutionizing filmmaking altogether,” says the synopsis making bold promises. “All types of cameras are used – video, HD, 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm – as we follow scientists’ footsteps through a haunted house, casting a frightening spell over the audience. Brace yourself for this terrifying experience!”
Kai Lennox, Michael O’Keefee, Gia Mantegna, Rick Gonzalez, Fionna Glascott, Francesc Garrido all star in the flick that promises to be something “fresh” and “original” — isn’t that what we all want? READ MORE

Late casting news out of AFM this morning has Stephen Moyer (“True Blood”, The Caller, The Barrens) and Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill, The Crazies) joining the cast of Evidence as detectives.
In Evidence, “When the police arrive at an abandoned desert gas station after a brutal massacre, they find no evidence at the crime scene except for some of the victim’s personal electronics, which include a video camera, a Flip-cam, and two cellphones. With nothing else to go on, a troubled detective must analyze and piece together the footage from the personal electronics in order to figure out what the hell happened and who the killer is.”
The film is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi (The Fourth Kind) and also stars Torrey DeVitto (The Rite, Killer Movie, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer), Caitlin Stasey, John Cothren, Svetlana Metinka (Trackman), Albert Kuo and Dale Dickey (Super 8) READ MORE

In the midst of a record breaking opening, this past weekend Paramount executives claimed there were no talks about a fourth Paranormal Activity. We all knew they were full of sh*t. You don’t need a abnormally-sized calculator to tell you that the franchise is beyond profitable.
In the most obvious story of the year (maybe even decade), TheWrap is reporting that we can expect Paranormal Activity 4 in theaters by next October. (Duh?)
“I can’t imagine that we wouldn’t make a number four, and I imagine (Paramount Film Group president) Adam Goodman this morning is thinking about the challenge,” Don Harris, Paramount’s head of domestic distribution explained. “I’m sure he’s thinking, ‘Now what do I do?’”
Uhm, duh?
Paranormal is arguably the most profitable film property of all time. The first installment, made for a mere $15,000 (a totally fictitious number), grossed $193.35 million worldwide. The second, made for $3 million, grossed $177.51 million worldwide. And the third, which opened Friday, opened to $54 million — the highest-grossing opening weekend for a horror film ever and the biggest October opening ever. Its budget: $5 million. So far, the three films have cost a total of $8,015,000 and have grossed a worldwide total of more than $450 million.
A fourth sequel? Say it with me: “DUH!” READ MORE

The directorial debut of Spanish helmer Fernando Barreda Luna, “ ‘Atrocious’ excerpts found footage from a film reel recovered by Spanish police, documenting a family of five discovering the truth behind a dangerous urban legend. The 37 hours of found footage follow Cristian and July Quintanilla passing time at their summer home by investigating a terrifying and mysterious urban legend. As their investigation intensifies, strange occurrences in and around the house escalate rapidly, culminating finally in unspeakable atrocities.” READ MORE
Those of you who take long road trips or hit major highways on a daily basis may be quite familiar with the Government’s “AMBER Alters” (America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response). It’s a way of alerting the American people to a time sensitive “situation” in hopes that one of million spot a “wanted” vehicle.
Independent filmmaker Kerry Bellessa has taken this real world device and blended it into a found footage chiller known as Amber Alert, which is to be sold at AFM from Underground Films and Bluefield Entertainment.
The plot is pretty obvious, but holds many possibilities: things go terribly wrong when a group of kids go in pursuit of a wanted vehicle.
We got our hands on the promo trailer that’s nothing short of incredible. The potential is endless… READ MORE

Hot on the heels of a successful screening at Fantastic Fest last month the Paranormal Activity 3 marketing machine is hitting overdrive in anticipation of the film’s upcoming release.
This newest TV Spot packs a lot of new footage into its 30 seconds. Mr. Disgusting has gone on record saying that the trailers for the 3rd one alone seem more eventful than the entirety of the 2nd movie, and on first glance I tend to agree. Even if none of this gets us closer to understanding Nev’s tramp stamp in Catfish, it does help us gain a greater insight into the effed up technicolor childhood that leads to Katie Featherston’s poltergeist troubles later in life.
Franchise creator and producer Oren Peli returns with Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman directing from a screenplay by Disturbia scribe Christopher B. Landon. Paranormal Activity 3 lands in theaters October 21st.
Hit the jump to check out the new spot!

Update: I’m being told that while the character’s names are those similar to the Benson murders (which was optioned by the original ‘Amityville’ filmmakers back in 1986), there is NO relation to the actual people nor events. In addition, I’ve learned this will be an Asylum production.
There are so many Amityville Horror connected movies in the works it’s actually kind of annoying. Dimension Films is developing an official sequel, The Amityville Tapes, with directors Casey La Scala and Daniel Farrands. Film Regions International is working on “My Amityville Horror,” Eric Walter’s documentary about the infamous “Amityville Murders” that will “set the record straight” with the help of Daniel Lutz, the eldest son of George and Kathleen Lutz. And then there’s Amityville: The Legacy 3D, based on the book “Amityville: The Evil Escapes” (also the title of the 1989 made-for-TV movie) by John G. Jones.
Bloody Disgusting got exclusive word on a FOURTH that’s currently casting for a shoot in Los Angeles beginning next week. Geoff Meed, who is listed as an actor and stuntman on IMDB, will be directing the “found footage” film that tells the tale of a “new family” that moved into the infamous Amityville house.
The title: Amityville Haunting.
Now, we’re being told that the film is based on the true crime story of the Benson family of Naples, where Steven Benson was accused of the pipe-bomb murders of his mother and brother. According to Wiki, Benson is a convicted double murderer of his mother, tobacco heiress Margaret Benson; and his brother, tennis player Scott Benson.
On July 9, 1985 Benson placed a car bomb on the family car, in which Margaret, Scott, and Steven’s sister, Carol Lynn Benson Kendall, (a former Miss Florida runner-up) were waiting for Steven to join them in the vehicle when the Suburban exploded. Kendall survived but was badly burned; Margaret and Scott died instantly from the bomb impact.
