‘Chronicle 2′ Writer Says Movie Is Definitely Happening, Is “60-75 Percent Sure” It Will Be Good

A few months ago we filed this report on the state of the upcoming sequel to Chronicle, in which John Landis (father of writer Max Landis) stated that Fox wasn’t entirely happy with the new script, “He wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, ‘We want ‘Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.

Max Landis took some time over the weekend at Middle East Comic-Con to speak with IGN about the film. Among other things, he clarified that his father was perhaps talking out of turn. “[He's] not involved in Chronicle 2. He doesn’t know the process. It was not his place to say that.” Landis added that the new film would be dark, and perhaps that’s the stumbling block. “The report came out that they [the studio] didn’t like my script. They liked my script. It’s just a really dark script. The question is more of ‘How do we all compromise to get something we want?’ And that’s an incredibly slow process.

This still sort of sounds like they didn’t like it if you define “liking it” as “wanting to make it.” However, Landis concluded the interview by saying the movie is definitely happening and, “60-75% sure that it will be a pretty damn good movie.” I actually really enjoyed the first film, placing it on several “Best Of 2012″ lists for the site. Let’s hope that the odds for the sequel increase steadily as the process chugs along.

The-Following

[TV] “The Following” Must Have Some Following Since It Just Got Renewed

I still haven’t gotten past the pilot of “The Following”, but apparently a lot of you have! Per Variety, “Warner Bros. TV’s “The Following” bowed strongly in January in the Monday 9 p.m. timeslot, and sees benefits from Live+7 ratings (particularly DVR use), which places the frosh drama in the No. 2 broadcast drama spot this season in 18-49. Fox ordered 15 episodes for its second season, the same order as its first run.

The FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? Welcome to “The Following”, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and director Marcos Siega (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dexter”).

“The Following” airs Monday nights on Fox at 9/8c.

[TV] Next On “The Following”, Catch Up On The Whole Show In Five Minutes!

This is made for people like me who missed the last four episodes of “The Following” and want to catch up. Actually, come to think of it, I missed the last four episodes because I strongly disliked the pilot. But who knows? Maybe the show got better and this is all I need to catch up and enjoy episode 6 on, “The Fall”, on Monday?

[TV] Kurtzman & Orci’s “Sleepy Hollow” Goes Into Development

We first reported on “Sleepy Hollow” back in July, and now it looks like the project from Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci is going in to development for the Fox network. No word on if Underworld director Len Wiseman is still directing the pilot.

The project, from 20th Century Fox TV and Kurtzman and Orci’s studio-based K/O Paper Products, is descried as “A modern–day supernatural thriller based on the legend of “Sleepy Hollow.” It follows Ichabod Crane as he partners with Sleepy Hollow’s local female sheriff to solve the mysteries of a town ravaged by the battle between good and evil.

Kurtzman and Orci will write the script with Phillip Iscove, on whose idea the project is based.

[Remember This?] “Werewolf” The TV Series!!!

“The Walking Dead”, “Dexter”, “American Horror Story”, “True Blood”. Horror is almost more popular on TV these days than it is in cinemas. There’s something about the small screen that seems to “legitimize” the genre for casual viewers. Maybe it’s an ingrained expectation that television’s historically strict standards and practices will save them from the nasty bits (which is of course no longer true in the days of HBO and AMC), or perhaps it’s just the simple equation that smaller screen = less scary.

My mom had to be a subscriber to at least one of these theories because she let me watch “Werewolf” at an exceedingly young age. I can even remember her enabling my efforts to get from where I was to where I needed to be to watch it. I had to see it. The funny thing is, I’m pretty sure I was sort of bored by it – I only really remember getting excited when the wolf was onscreen, which wasn’t very often. But I was so addled by my love of An American Werewolf In London that, if it had werewolves in it, I was glued to the screen.

The show ran for 28 episodes on Fox from 1987-1988. I was too young to retain any real specifics, but the internet tells me that it was similar to “The Fugitive” in structure – so it has that going for it! If nothing else, the werewolf design is actually decent.

Now we’ve got the full trailer. It looks fairly interesting, but I kind of doubt it will push my buttons in the way that my favorite shows do. Tonally I’m getting a heavy procedural vibe even if the show ends up bucking that structure. What do you think?

12 Alternate ‘Prometheus’ Posters! The Genesis Of A Marketing Campaign

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, his quasi Alien prequel, hit Blu-ray and DVD recently both in the UK and in the States. And what you’re seen is most certainly not the first conceptual iteration of the film.

Just as it morphed from a pure Alien prequel into something different (more on that here and here), the marketing campaign itself morphed as the studio went through its internal processes on how to best sell the film.

PrometheusMovie got their hands on some unused posters for the film. While I can’t be 100% sure that all of these are real (and the international and domestic dates are in flux), a lot of them sure seem like it. Some play up the xenomorph cave-drawing, some play up acidic alien blood eating through metal and others are variations of the existing campaign. While I’m assuming that the general direction of the film had long since been decided by the point Fox got around to testing these ideas, it’s interesting to see them move in a similar direction. Further and further from an Alien prequel.

Fox Not Happy With Max Landis’ Script For ‘Chronicle 2′

Chronicle was one of this year’s surprise hits, and deservedly so. It’s a really fun movie that announced several major new talents like director Josh Trank who will be helming the upcoming Fantastic Four (with the talented Jeremy Slater steering the script). Other talented people who got a career boost out of the film include Dane Dehaan, Michael B. Jordan and Australian actor Alex Russell (the latter of whom is rumored to be returning for Chronicle 2).

Then there’s the credited writer, Max Landis. I’m not sure exactly how much of the film’s success he’s responsible for – Trank seemed to be the powerhouse there – but he’s certainly been enjoying a high profile since its release. Fox kept him onboard to draft Chronicle 2 and they don’t seem too happy with the results. The Playlist was speaking to John Landis (An American Werewolf In London, Blues Brothers) about his own film troubles when he decided to discuss his son’s recent problems. ““He wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, ‘We want ‘Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.

I read a post on Collider that expressed some disappointment in Fox for being “unwilling to take risks with the sequel.” I also hate when studios refuse to take risks but, in this case, I’m guessing that they just didn’t like it. If you’ve seen Landis speak at conventions he doesn’t seem big on listening, which can complicate things when working with a studio.

Kojima Productions’ New Fox Engine Could Power Other Konami Titles, Including The ‘Silent Hill’ Series

The engine that will be powering Kojima Productions’ future projects, including the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, is the brand spanking new Fox Engine. At the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary panel at PAX, Kojima discussed the new engine and its potential, which he said won’t be limited only to his studio’s games. The Fox Engine could be used to power other Konami titles, Kojima even went on to mention the Silent Hill series as a possibility. This isn’t a confirmation on anything, though I wouldn’t be surprised if development of another game in the longstanding survival horror series is already underway, but it does inspire some exciting possibilities for the next installment in the franchise. In case you need something to help get you excited about what this could mean for Silent Hill, head past the break for eleven minutes of gorgeous Fox Engine-powered Ground Zeroes gameplay.

I’m not sure if I have any more room left in my day, let alone another hour to dedicate to another TV show. This is where you guys come into play. As someone who hasn’t ever seen an episode of “The Vampire Diaries”, I’m not terribly inclined to watch Fox’s “The Following” (aka the new Kevin Williamson show). But I like Kevin Bacon and I like Natalie Zea (“Justified”, The Other Guys). So I’m asking one of you guys to check this thing out when it premieres midseason and tell me if it’s worth a d*mn. It’s also got Shawn Ashmore for all you Frozen and Mother’s Day fans out there.

Welcome to “The Following”, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the ‘Scream’ franchise). When notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy, “Rome”) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy (Emmy-nominated actor Kevin Bacon, ‘X-Men: First Class’) to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature.

Ridley Scott Prometheus

UPDATED: ‘Prometheus’ Ticket Does Not Prove It’s Rated “R”, But It’ll Probably Be “R” Anyway

Confirmed. Prometheus has been officially rated “R” for “sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.

A lot of people are talking about how an AMC presale ticket stub (via Collider) for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus confirms that it has an “R” rating. While I actually do think the film will be “R”, I’m basing that more on recent statements by Tom Rothman and Ridley Scott than I am this image. Rothman recently stated that the film “would not be compromised” and Scott declared that it would be his director’s cut hitting cinemas. So whether or not it’s “PG13″ or “R” – it’s his vision.

That being said, the MPAA has yet to announce the rating for Prometheus. These things aren’t secrets, it’s just not announced. So I don’t know why we think they’d announce it only to the person entering the rating info into AMC’s computer system – they’re probably just assuming (along with their colleagues buttering the popcorn) that it’s “R” just like the rest of us are. So I don’t think this ticket proves much of anything, but I’m pretty sure this is what they’ll look like anyway. It should also be noted that AMC listed the rating of American Reunion as “PG13″ and that didn’t turn out to be the case.

In theaters June 8, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Guy Pearce, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Benedict Wong, Emun Elliott, Ben Foster, Patrick Wilson all star.

7-Eleven Has a Deleted Scene From ‘Super 8′

Here’s a story straight out of left field.

7-Eleven – who was exclusively selling Rocketpoppeteers Popsicles – has bonus footage (aka a deleted scene) from JJ Abrams’ Super 8 not seen by audiences in theaters.

The clip shows friends Joe (Joel Courtney), Charles (Riley Griffiths), and Cary (Ryan Lee) at their after school pitstop – 7-Eleven – discussing plans to shoot scenes for their super 8 movie.

Now in theaters, “In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

‘Kong: King Of Skull Island’ Becomes Animated Feature At Fox

Back in 2009, Kong: King Of Skull Island was optioned by Spirit Entertainment with the intent of producing a motion-capture (possibly 3-D) film. Based on a novel that came out around the same time as Peter Jackson’s remake, the story focused on the backstory of Skull Island and how the giant gorilla became king there, introducing other giant gorillas and dinosaurs only hinted at in the previous films.

Deadline reports that Fox has recently picked up the project and plans to turn it into an animated feature that is a modern-day take on the King Kong story told from the ape’s perspective. Christian Magalhaes and Bob Snow, whose ‘Murder of a Cat’ script made the Black List, have been hired to pen the tale. This sounds a little too ambitious to be DTV, but I can’t really say whether or not general audiences are salivating for more giant ape adventures, especially when the last two attempts to bring the story to the big screen failed to set the world on fire – I love Jackson’s version, though.

Interview: ‘Super 8′ Director J.J. Abrams!

One of the most anticipated films of the summer is writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (review), about a small Ohio town in 1979 that suffers a rash of bizarre occurrences following an explosive train crash nearby.

In anticipation of the release of the movie – which was produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and in many ways harkens back to the likes of early Amblin-backed films like E.T. and The Goonies – B-D’s Chris Eggertsen recently had the opportunity to attend a press roundtable with Abrams to get his take on the film, which comes out in theaters everywhere this Friday. Newest ‘Super 8′ Poster Art is the Best Yet

JJ Abrams’ Super 8 is only days away from starting its theatrical run, and the reviews have been nothing short of phenomenal so far. There’s really nothing like seeing that Amblin logo float across the screen and then have the film make good on it. It has a great Goonies-like group of rambunctious adolscents thrust into this situation they can’t control as it completely reshapes their personalities and becomes the defining moment in their formative years. Like I said, it does the Amblin name proud.

A new poster hit the web today, courtesy of Cine1, featuring a montage with most of the central characters and several pivotal moments. Check out the poster art after the break, which is a breath of fresh air in an age full of crappy photoshopped ads.

The other clip features Joe’s dad, Jackson (Kyle Chandler), as he attempts to find out where his kid vanished off too. Their super 8 dailies may hold the clue.
