Frankenstein’s Army

Using shocking vintage newsreel footage as his jumping-off point, Raaphorst has hit on a unique and bold premise. Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary’s Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of supersoldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

This look at the poster is a little rough, we’ll be sure to update when we’ve got a high-rez version.

Stumbling upon a village decimated by an unseen terror, they discover that a mad scientist (Hellboy’s Karel Roden) conducts experiments to fuse flesh and steel, creating an unstoppable army of undead soldiers. Leaderless and faced with dissention amongst their dwindling ranks, they must find the courage to face down an altogether new menace – or die trying.READ MORE

[Special Report] Set Visit Preview For ‘Frankenstein’s Army’!

By Elmar Berger

January 26th will see the world premiere screening of Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s highly anticipated monster extravaganza Frankenstein’s Army at the 42nd edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

The film wrapped shooting more than ten months ago in Karlovy Vary, a small town near the Czech capital of Prague. While still shooting, BD was granted access to the impressive sets of the US / Dutch co-production, located in an old, now-closed mining colony. The film’s producers couldn’t have picked a better location for the World War II setting of Raaphorst’s story. The old, run-down buildings and slowly-rotting industrial facilities of the complex were surrounded by huge barbed wire fences, all of which breathed an eerie, ultra-realistic atmosphere.

Dark Sky Films have released the first two official stills from Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s eagerly-anticipated World War II horror/fantasy, Frankenstein’s Army.

‘Frankenstein’s Army’ Premiere Info And A Look At One Of The Film’s Contraptions

FrankenHeader42012 Frankensteins Army Premiere Info And A Look At One Of The Films Contraptions

A few quick nots regarding Dark Sky’s Frankenstein’s Army. We’re getting word from Horror.Nl that the film, which sounds really cool, will be premiering in ???* before moving on to its UK theatrical release. Also a plus? Apparently there’s no CGI in the film (we’ll see if that means no CG or just very little CG). Hopefully all of this will lead to a stateside release.

*UPDATE – Turns out there is no firm premiere city as of yet.

Set toward the end of World War II, Frankenstein’s Army stars Karel Roden, Alexander Mercury (The Golden Compass), Joshua Sasse (The Big I Am), Luke Newberry (The Heart of Me), Andrei Zayats (X-Men: First Class), Mark Stevenson (The Last Horror Movie), Hon Ping Tang (The Fifth Element), Cristina Catalina (Eastern Promises), Robert Gwylim (Escape from Sobibor), and Jan De Lukovicz.

‘Frankenstein’s Army’ Hasn’t Eaten These Brains (Or Hobbits) Yet

I know Dark Sky’s Frankenstein’s Army is a film that a lot of you are anticipating, and if you’re hard up enough to want to see brainy prop corpse from the film then you’re in luck! And if you’ve got a thing for Hobbit feet – stick around! We don’t really cover the latter film on this site but consider it a bonus in the video below.

Twitch reports in with a video featuring Rogier Samuels, who is the senior prosthetics technician on Army as well as the upcoming The Hobbit. Samuels was interviewed on Dutch television and, “as he wasn’t allowed to show any props from ‘The Hobbit’ he showed a few from “Frankenstein’s Army” instead. The interview primarily covered Rogier moving to New Zealand for six months with his whole family, but there were plenty of things mentioned about the two projects he’s currently working on.

The interview is the first five minutes of the clip below. There is some behind-the-scenes footage from ‘The Hobbit’ where Rogier tells about the dwarf make-up: each of the thirteen dwarfs has their own masks and feet, parts of which have to be remade anew every day… and then he uses a corpse from ‘Frankenstein’s Army’ to demonstrate which new materials are used today. He also said that such a detailed prop could take as much as a month to build.

[Set Report] Preview From Prague Locations Of ‘Frankenstein’s Army’!

[Set Report] Preview From Prague Locations Of Frankensteins Army!

Frankenstein’s Army is ready to strike!

BD stringer Elmar Berger writes in from set where principal photography for Richard Raaphorst’s Frankenstein’s Army starring Karel Roden (Hellboy), Hon Ping Tang (The Fifth Element)and Alexander Mercury (The Golden Compass) among others, wrapped this past Friday near Prague, Czech Republic. Bloody Disgusting was given the opportunity to spend a day on set, and boy, the film’s producers couldn’t have picked a better location for the World War 2 Nazi-monster flick! An old run-down mining complex hosted various sets where a major part of the action took place. This mining complex, that nowadays serves as a museum to the public, is located between a still working prison and a shooting range of the Czech police from where constant gunfire was heard all day long. Add to this numerous actors dressed up as German and Russian soldiers armed to their teeth, and the illusion of being a time traveler that accidentally stumbled into a world war 2 battle is complete!

To top this experience BD was granted a peek into the films FX shop filled with a massive number of bizzarre monsters and creatures. The nice folks of Unreal FX even showed us some fx test footage they filmed earlier where, well, actually I can’t tell you that right now, but as a small hint, that particular scene involved a half Nazi, half mosquito monster!

The major part of the film’s creatures have been designed by director Raaphorst and since he’s a fan of old-school horror most of em have been brought to live be practical fx!

It’s pretty sure that Frankenstein’s Army is going to be a bloodsoaked ride or, as actor Robert Gwilym who plays a captain of the Russian army says “I’ve never been in a more violent movie!

A much more detailed set report is going to be published here pretty soon, so keep watching this space! READ MORE

FrankLand30912 Frankensteins Army Has Been Recruited!

I know there’s a lot of Frankenstein projects to keep straight in your mind these days. But, if it helps, Frankenstein’s Army is actually filming.

Closing out its first week of principal photography in the ancient village of Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, MPI Media Group and XYZ Films proudly announce the central cast of the film, an international gathering with European talent hailing from The UK, Russia, and Czech Republic.

The stunning, ancient location, situated near historic Prague, was also recently used in the 2006 box office hit Casino Royale.

Frankenstein’s Army takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. Raaphorst’s Worst Case Scenario stands as one of the great horror films that never was. The Nazi-zombie project whipped up a massive international following thanks to two early promo reels. But due to financing and production difficulties, the project was abandoned in 2009. Now, director Raaphorst will bring his visionary design skills to this new horror movie, to be distributed by MPI/Dark Sky Films in North America. READ MORE

Yet Another Promo For Yet-To-Be-Filmed ‘Frankenstein’s Army’

Now, website Twitch has posted yet another promo trailer stating that filming has been bumped back to September.

All of the released footage from Raaphorst’s projects have been nothing short of incredible, but I’m strapping myself in for more disappointment – that is until I actually read that “action!” was called.
