Fright Night 2

When high school student Charlie attends a study abroad program with his horror obsessed friend “Evil” Ed and ex-girlfriend AMY in Romania, he soon discovers their young attractive professor Gerri (Jaime Murray) is a real life vampire. Too bad no one believes him. In fact, Evil Ed finds it amusing and it only feeds his vampire obsession. When Gerri turns Ed, Charlie seeks out Peter Vincent, the infamous vampire hunter (well, he plays one on TV) who is in Romania filming his show “Fright Night,” to teach him how to take down Gerri before she gets to Amy, who’s blood will cure Gerri of spending eternity as a vampire.

Fright Night told of a young man who learns a vampire has moved in next door. [Remember This?] What Was The First Horror Sequel To Disappoint You?

Oddly enough my first experiences with sequels were all pretty positive. The first ones that really come to mind are Aliens (which I didn’t even know was a sequel when I saw it) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, both James Cameron slam dunks. Even if T2 doesn’t hold up as well as Aliens, it was still tailor made for whatever version of me it was that saw it 5 times in the summer of 1991. These movies, along with Gremlins 2, may be why I don’t necessarily feel the same instant negativity towards sequelization that most people do.

But when I think about it, there are still a few bruises. Elm Street was one of my favorite franchises as a kid but since I was too young to see these things in the theater I had to just sort of catch up with them on VHS on those weekends when things like money and lack of parental supervision really came together. I was lucky enough to skip Freddy’s Revenge (even though I still don’t think it’s all that bad) and head straight to the near factually awesome Dream Warriors. The it was onto The Dream Master, which was riding a real cultural wave – for those of you who don’t remember Freddy Krueger had a truly mainstream moment in 1988 – that I was easily swept up in. It’s almost like I forgave the film for being a step down because I felt like I was part of some larger conversation. READ MORE

[2013 HORROR MOVIE PREVIEW] SONY/SCREEN GEMS/FILM DISTRICT

While Sony and Screen Gems typically pump out the horror, most of the genre films they release fail to deliver. This is because the heft of their releases are franchises that they hope to (and do) cash in on. Not to mention that many of the Screen Gems titles are made for kids, and not hardcore horror fans.

Last year saw another Resident Evil and Underworld, both “fine” by sequel standards, alongside Ghost Rider and Total Recall. There’s four incredibly bland franchise films.

2013 looks promising, though, as the first quarter sees not just Carrie, but also the hotly anticipated Evil Dead reboot; it’s an understatement to say that horror comes out strong next year. In fact, the success of Evil Dead could potentially propel the genre into a new age of dark horror. READ MORE

Fright Night 3D (remake) - 4

Did You Guys Wants A Direct-To-Home Video ‘Fright Night’ Sequel?

The one thing that I actually love about a remake is that it, assuming a sequel gets made, they’ll be forced to do something original. Unfortunately, when a reboot does poorly, typically the sequel is a direct-to-home video dumper (see, well, pretty much everything except Wrong Turn 2).

ShockTillYouDrop is reporting that Eduardo Rodriguez (Curandero, Fear Itself, Stash House) has been tapped to helm Fright Night 2, a direct-to-video sequel to DreamWorks’ 2011 remake that bombed at the box officie ($18 total domestic, $40 million worldwide). It must have made an impact on home video for them to move forward on a sequel…

The site adds that we shouldn’t expect Colin Farrell or Anton Yelchin to return.

The direct-to-DVD sequel will be a stand-alone story and begin shooting in Romania soon.
