[Remember This?] What Movies Are You Afraid Suck Now?

There are some films that exist as sacred experiences in our memory, and it’s likely that our memory is the only place where they can exist in such a fashion. I’m talking about those horror films from my childhood that still trigger my pleasure neurons when I think about them, but if I take the time to realistically gauge what my reaction to them today would be like – I’m filled with a specific and undeniable brand of seething uneasiness.

For instance, I adored Fright Night 2 as a kid. I remember it as a raucous romp wherein Charlie Brewster had a sexier girlfriend who could even make studying at the library look hot. I also seem to remember that, this time, Peter Vincent is the one who has to do the convincing – which is an interesting reversal. I also remember being mildly disappointed that Evil Ed didn’t return (as promised) but I felt like the bowling scene somehow made up for it.

I imagine if I revisited the film today I’d feel differently. First of all, it’s out of print – not a great sign of its enduring cultural longevity (there are some films where it’s like a crime that they’re out of print, this doesn’t feel like one of them – tell me if it is). Secondly, all of the things that made the movie a plus when I was in the 5th or 6th grade would likely bog it down with silliness now. I almost feel like a new viewing would turn me into Charlie Brewster at the beginning of the sequel, a once-believer who is now throwing away all of his crucifixes. READ MORE

Exclusive First Casting News For ‘Fright Night’; Story Details!!

Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has green lit production for Fright Night 2 and has cast Jaime Murray (pictured above; “Warehouse 13,” “Dexter”) in the lead role!

Murray, who played the exotic and seductive Lila Tournay in the second season of “Dexter,” can also be seen in Botched, The Deaths of Ian Stone and Devil’s Playground. She will play an Romanian vampire in the Eduardo Rodriguez-directed sequel.

In addition, it sounds as if “Evil” Ed and Peter Vincent will be returning for the direct-to-disc sequel. Here’s the official plot provided to Bloody: “When high school student Charlie attends a study abroad program with his horror obsessed friend “Evil” Ed and ex-girlfriend AMY in Romania, he soon discovers their young attractive professor Gerri (Jaime Murray) is a real life vampire. Too bad no one believes him. In fact, Evil Ed finds it amusing and it only feeds his vampire obsession. When Gerri turns Ed, Charlie seeks out Peter Vincent, the infamous vampire hunter (well, he plays one on TV) who is in Romania filming his show “Fright Night,” to teach him how to take down Gerri before she gets to Amy, who’s blood will cure Gerri of spending eternity as a vampire.

Tom Holland directed the 1985 Fright Night that spawned a sequel in 1988 that reunited its main cast members Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale.

Filming begins in Bucharest, Romania next week. READ MORE

Fright Night 3D (remake) - 4

Did You Guys Wants A Direct-To-Home Video ‘Fright Night’ Sequel?

The one thing that I actually love about a remake is that it, assuming a sequel gets made, they’ll be forced to do something original. Unfortunately, when a reboot does poorly, typically the sequel is a direct-to-home video dumper (see, well, pretty much everything except Wrong Turn 2).

ShockTillYouDrop is reporting that Eduardo Rodriguez (Curandero, Fear Itself, Stash House) has been tapped to helm Fright Night 2, a direct-to-video sequel to DreamWorks’ 2011 remake that bombed at the box officie ($18 total domestic, $40 million worldwide). It must have made an impact on home video for them to move forward on a sequel…

The site adds that we shouldn’t expect Colin Farrell or Anton Yelchin to return.

The direct-to-DVD sequel will be a stand-alone story and begin shooting in Romania soon.

Fright Night told of a young man who learns a vampire has moved in next door. The door spun off of that idea and set the events in Las Vegas where Charlie Brewster enlists Peter Vincent, a Vegas illusionist, to take on the vampire who has targeted his family.

Tom Holland directed the 1985 Fright Night that spawned a sequel in 1988 that reuniting its main cast members Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale.

Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! There are 61 Films listed below the jump. Each film you’ve seen earns you 1 Point. Count out how many you’ve seen and let us know which category you fall into. Dreamworks Details ‘Fright Night’ Home Video Release

DreamWorks Pictures’ Fright Night, starring Colin Farrell, arrives on December 13, 2011 just in time to take a bite out of the holidays on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital and On-Demand. Inspired by the 1985 gothic horror cult classic and directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl, Mr. Woodcock), all hell breaks loose when High School Senior Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) discovers his charming new neighbor Jerry (Farrell) is a Vampire preying on his neighborhood.

Packed with un-rated bonus features, the Blu-ray release includes a fang-in-cheek mockumentary “Peter Vincent: Swim Inside My Mind,” a hilarious satirical look at David Tennant’s egocentric “rock star” anti-hero character, Peter Vincent; “The Official How to Make a Funny Vampire Movie Guide;” “Squid Man: Extended and Uncut;” “Frightful Facts & Terrifying Trivia;” “Deleted Scenes;” and a “Gag Reel.” Also included is the uncensored “No One Believes Me” music video directed by Fright Night‘s director Craig Gillespie and performed by hip hop recording artist Kid Cudi.

[Review] A Second Opinion on ‘Fright Night 3D’

Last night we shared with you Chris Eggertsen’s brutal review of Dreamworks’ Fright Night 3D, their remake of Tom Holland’s classic 1985 take on vampires that’s now in theaters everywhere.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, a general consensus among Bloody Disgusting is that Marti Noxon’s screenplay was the crux, with the insane overuse of CGI being a close second (we’re being told that KNB had done tremendous practical blood on the set, so why Dreamworks covered it with video game crap is beyond us).

Anyways, BC chimed in with his review, while you guys can now write your own and tell all of BD what You thought? Are we idiots? You tell us…

[Review] ‘Fright Night 3D’ Lacks the Soul and Charm of Its Predecessor

Coming out this Friday, August 19th, Dreamworks’ Fright Night 3D is a Craig Gillespie-directed remake of the hit 1985 vampire flick about a high school boy who discovers that a vampire has moved in next door. The updated cast includes Anton Yelchin as Charley Brewster, Colin Farrell as Jerry Dandrige, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as “Evil” Ed Thompson, and David Tennant as Peter Vincent (in this version written as a cheesy Vegas magician).

Unfortunately, if you were hoping for a halfway decent reboot, you might want to tamp down on those expectations. Succinctly put: Now we’ve got the inevitable remake, a visually slick product that boasts a bigger-name cast but lacks the soul and charm of its predecessor. I’m not one of these people who believes all remakes are automatically bad – hell, a precious few are actually better than the films that inspired them – but ‘Fright Night’ 2011 is the sort of lackluster effort that helped create that perception in the first place.

A visually slick product that boasts a bigger-name cast but lacks the soul and charm of its predecessor…What also feels stilted are the special effects, which rely so heavily on CGI that the grand finale looks like something copped from a video game. This will likely be the final straw for hardcore fans of the original…” Click the title for the review in its entirety.

Red Band ‘Fright Night’ Clip Turns Up The Heat

A new clip for Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake hit the web today, featuring Colin Farrell’s Jerry lighting a literal fire under Charlie’s ass. The film definitely strikes its own identity with some clever bits like this and never comes off as an 80′s film with modern conventions (something that too many remakes do). Fright Night hits theatres this Friday.

Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all going on: he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the most coveted girl in his high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend. But trouble arrives when Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right–but everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After observing some very strange activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on the neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.

Charlie Doesn’t Understand Women in Latest ‘Fright Night 3D’ Clips, See Chris Sarandon’s Cameo!

Update #1: We’ve added three more clips. The first has Jerry asking to be let in because Charlie is “harassing” him. Charlie begs his mom to ignore him. The second you’ll see Charlie asking Peter Vincent (David Tenant) to join his “Scooby” gang, while the last has Vincent declaring, “let’s go kill something.

Update #2: Below you’ll find a hi-res look at Chris Sarandon – who starred as the vampire Jerry in the 1985 original – in his cameo role. He plays another driver on the road during the chase sequence you can see in the trailer. Spoiler warning: He hits their car, gets out and asks why they were stopped — then he sees Jerry. “It’s stupid,” says BC, who saw the movie the other night.

In theaters this Friday we’ve posted yet another clip from Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night 3D featuring Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) having a conversation with his mother (Toni Collette) about their new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farrell). Charlie warns his mom NOT to acknowledge or let Jerry in the house, as it may be dangerous. Little does Charlie know, this bit of information got his mom excited. I can picture her internal conversation now… “Jerry’s a bad boy? Does he ride a motorcycle too? He DOES?! Come right in, up the stairs, to my room…I need a second to freshen up.

[Set Visit] The Longest, Most Insane Report From the Set of ‘Fright Night 3D’

Way, way back in September 2010, one unbelievably lucky B-D reporter (holla!) was drugged, tossed on a plane against his will and flown out to the set of Dreamworks’ Fright Night (releasing August 19th), a 3D remake of the beloved 1985 Tom Holland horror/comedy that has gone on to become one of the most well-regarded vampire films of the last 30 years. Filming at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in the deliriously exciting city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, I managed to get a look behind the scenes at one of the most anticipated genre releases of 2011 and chat with several members of the cast and crew, including but not limited to stars Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell, director Craig Gillespie, screenwriter Marti Noxon and special effects makeup guru Howard Berger.
