[BD Review] ‘The Asylum Tapes’ is an Exercise in Patience

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

Having to sit through DTV found footage movies is starting to get painful. What stings even more is when one of America’s greatest filmmakers stamps his approval on one of these pieces of crap. Written, directed, and starring Sean Stone, son of revered director Oliver Stone, The Asylum Tapes (aka Greystone Park) is an exercise in patience. In a world blemished with countless Paranormal Activity and [Rec] biters, Sean Stone’s film offers up nothing remotely fresh for the audience to sink its teeth into. Instead, it’s another throwaway for the bargain bin.

The film begins with a dinner party in which Oliver Stone, his son, and others are smoking from a hookah and telling ghost stories. Mr. Stone seems really chill. He recounts a time in which he was in the woods and a female apparition scared the hell out of him. Alex, a friend of Stone’s, is really into ghost and urban legends and he suggests they all go to Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital to sneak around and try to catch some juicy supernatural goods on camera. Greystone is an actual former psych hospital located in Hanover Township, New Jersey, which I’m vaguely familiar with from growing up in nearby Sussex County. The funniest part is when Oliver Stone apologizes for not being able to go along, like he would ever really consider it.

Staging it at this infamous hospital sounds interesting, but I couldn’t find any info on whether it was actually filmed there – guerilla style or otherwise. So Alex, Sean, and a woman named Antonella venture into Greystone under cloak of night and start snooping around. Sean is apprehensive and ready to bounce after a few minutes of exploration. Alex, on the other hand, is perversely determined to find this ghost, who sports a gas mask and lugs chains around. The trio then endures a series of cliché found-footage scenarios while becoming gradually possessed by the asylum’s former patients – sometimes with unintentionally comical results.

A number of TV ghost-hunting show tropes also run rampant across the screen. There are quick cuts to doll heads, dark corners, flickering lights – it’s like the title sequence of Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The cinematography is miserable and filled with eye-watering shaky cam, inexplicable cuts, and embarrassingly awkward fade-in, fade-out transitions. The film is painfully unoriginal in content and editing. It’s just a bad film. There are no characters to relate to, no engaging relationship between said characters, nothing. It honestly pains me to say considering Sean Stone’s pedigree, but The Asylum Tapes feels like the work of some teenagers who borrowed their dad’s camera.

Oliver Stone did a few horror films in his early years as a filmmaker: 1974’s Seizure and 1981’s The Hand. I haven’t seen either, but maybe they’re just as bad as Sean Stone’s The Asylum Tapes and he just needs time to blossom into a groundbreaking filmmaker. I sincerely hope that’s the case and this film was just a learning experience and minor stain on his future career.

A/V

The Asylum Tapes is presented in 1.77:1 widescreen with 5.1 audio. There’s lots of night-vision, which never looks particularly good. Overall it’s an average looking and sounding film.

Special Features

Alternate ending with additional robed ghouls.

Coachella 2013 Lineup Unveiled

The full Coachella 2013 lineup has been unveiled and…well, it’s pretty boring. There are some pretty cool entries, such as the first ever live performance of How To Destroy Angels, or Ghost and I’d definitely be up for Bat For Lashes and Wu-Tang Clan, but not terribly much else pops out. Then again, I will fully admit that Coachella is not the type of festival that is aimed at my type of audience, so I’m sure there are countless thousands of people that are collectively crapping their pants at this festival. Below is the official poster with the full lineup.

The festival will take place April 12th-14th and again on April 19th-21st. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Jan. 29th here. READ MORE

Heavy metal band Ghost has released their cover of ABBA‘s “I’m A Marionette”, which you can listen to below. The cover is a somewhat stripped down, darker version of the original, which was far more bombastic and theatrical. While originally slated to appear on the band’s sophomore album Infestissumam, it does not appear on the current track listing.

Ghost Streaming New Song By Revealing Each Instrument Separately Before Combining Them All Tomorrow

Swedish NWOBHM-inspired band Ghost are releasing a new song in a rather interesting way: They’re streaming each instrument track individually on this website. If you hover your mouse cursor over a candle’s flame, you can hear the individual track, such as guitar, drums, or keys. However, if you leave your cursor off the flame, all the tracks are played together. New candles will be added throughout the day with the last part, the vocals, being added tomorrow, completing the song.

[BD Review] ‘Slaughter Tales’ Is Deliberately Awful And Not In A Good Way

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

Slaughter Tales is a self-aware love letter to the bygone SOV era that’s been making sort of a comeback this year thanks to distributors like Intervision. It doesn’t aspire to be anything more than a low-grade gorefest and on that front it’s a success. That doesn’t mean it’s all that great a film though. Maybe that’s the point? I dunno. All I know is that I found myself reaching for the fast forward button more than once. Despite admiring the enthusiasm of the teenage filmmaker, there’s not much else to get out of watching Slaughter Tales.

The anthology film was written and directed by 15-year-old Johnny Dickie (who also stars) and made on a budget of $65. The film starts with Johnny snatching a VHS tape from a thrift store. Before he throws it in the VCR, he psyches himself up in the mirror by saying stuff like “Oh man, this is going to suck!” I hear ya, man. Then an apparition (played by Johnny) appears and warns him not to watch the tape. Bad shit will happen if he does. Johnny shrugs it off like the stalwart cinephile he is and presses play.

What follows is five shorts, all starring Johnny and featuring homemade special effects made from dollar bin goodies and lotsa fake blood. None of them really stick out in my mind. One of them has some fun stop-motion that made me smile, but they’re all just really shitty. In between shorts the film cuts back to Johnny, kicking back on his futon, commenting on how much this movie sucks. What I got from this frame story is that Johnny wanted to make a shitty movie, but make it look as 80′s SOV as possible.

Mission accomplished, Johnny. Slaughter Tales looks like it really was salvaged from a thrift bargain bin where it’d been collecting dust for a decade. Besides its look, it’s paced and edited like crap, much like the “best” SOV films with those too-long pauses in between cuts. These are some the aspects of “so bad it’s good” films that people get a kick out of, but they’re done in such an intentionally tongue-in-cheek manner in Slaughter Tales that it’s difficult to get any organic enjoyment out of the film.

I appreciate Johnny’s rabid enthusiasm and, let’s face it, how many of us can say we had a film released on home video when we were 15. The problem is that in deliberately making a shitty 80′s SOV throwback, he forgot to make an entertaining, watchable movie. After watching Johnny puke for the fifth time, I wanted to throw in the towel. Or maybe that was the point? I give up.

A/V

Slaughter Tales looks like the 80′s SOV films it’s paying homage to. It flips between aspect ratios at times, which is kinda distracting.

Special Features

MAKING OF AN AMERICAN NIGHTMARE (2:38): This brief behind the scenes feature takes a look at the making of one short, starring Johnny’s mom. You gotta love that his mom supports her son’s bloody interests and was willing to get killed in his movie.

THE EFFECTS OF SLAUGHTER TALES (11:00): This looks at Johnny’s homemade effects. There are lots of dollar store items used to full effect. I can’t help but admire this kid’s ingenuity.

COMMENTARY: Dan and Tim from VHShitfest join Johnny Dickie for the feature-length commentary. They talk about how much Johnny curses, how his original idea led to a full-length film, and his myriad of influences.

[Interview] Kelly Sue DeConnick Resurrects ‘Ghost’ At Dark Horse

During the 90s, Dark Horse took a shot at creating their own branded superhero universe and created characters like X, Barb Wire, and Motorhead. One of the most successful characters to spin out of the company’s superhero line was Ghost, a female reporter, Elisa Cameron, that digs a little too deep into a story about the corruption in the city of Arcadia and is murdered in order to keep her quiet. She returns as a phantom spirit sent back to avenge her own death, while keeping her loved ones out of harm’s way.

Dark Horse has given writer Kelly Sue DeConnick (“Captain Marvel”, “Avengers”) and artist Phil Noto (“X-Men”) the job of resurrecting “Ghost” and rebooting one of their most successful properties in the new “In The Smoke & Din” mini-series. DeConnick is a weaving a tale full of mystery, intrigue and thrilling action that has keep reader’s on the edge of their seats. Phil Noto’s artwork perfectly complements the story with a elegant style that highlights the dark supernatural elements of the book with spooky precision.

We tracked down writer Kelly Sue Deconnick to discuss her resurrection of Dark Horse’s heroine. Deconnick sat down to talk about her work with the Oregon Paranormal investigators group in preparation for writing this series, her decision to move Ghost out of Arcadia, and what other Dark Horse Heroes she would bring back from the dead. Review: ‘Ghost’ #1

The numbering of Ghost #1, by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Phil Noto, is more than a little misleading. The issue picks up where “Ghost” #0 left off, so if you haven’t read that issue, you might find yourself at a bit of a loss jumping head first into this not-quite #1. The pickle that the title’s three main characters find themselves in is established in #0, when disgraced journalist Vaughn Barnes and his less than savvy partner Tommy Byers awaken the eponymous apparition. This issue of “Ghost” isn’t terrifically action packed but it does let us into the mind of the as yet unidentified Ghost and introduces a villain of Biblical proportions. READ MORE

It’s Vocal Heaven In These New Devin Townsend Live Clips

Easily one of the hardest working and most eclectic musicians today, Devin Townsend is a whirlwind of musical thoughts and energy. Each release of his is something out of this world, an auditory journey that never reveals the ending until the last notes fade away. Basically, I’m a huge fan.

In anticipation of the release of By A Thread: Live In London, two more video clips have popped up. The first is “Awake” from the Addicted album. Guest singer Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering) was at the show and the combination of her and Devin’s vocals are unbelievable. The second video is the title track from the Ghost album. Both are below for your viewing pleasure.

By A Thread: Live In London came out today and is available for order here. Devin Townsend will also be co-headlining the “Epic Kings & Idols” Tour with Katatonia. Support comes from Paradise Lost. Check out the tour dates below. READ MORE

Opeth, Mastodon, Ghost Tour Confirmed: Here Are The Tour Dates

heritagehuntermatteaser Opeth, Mastodon, Ghost Tour Confirmed: Here Are The Tour Dates
Although a Mastodon/Opeth/Ghost tour was confirmed by Mastodon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, there weren’t any tour dates or official statements to back up the claim. Well, that has all changed now as the full touring schedule has been released! Dubbed the Heritage Hunter Tour, the trek will see the three bands touring from April 4th until May 12th. I’m personally more excited for this tour than any other one in recent memory. Looks like I’m heading to Grand Rapids!
Opeth vocalist/guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt: “We’re touring North America together with Mastodon soon. Nice! One of the very few metal bands of today that I genuinely like. Good people too!  Ghost are coming with us as well, and they are one of the hottest new bands to come out of Sweden in recent years, and I dig them too. I sound like an old fart, don’t I? Well, I am.
“Yet, am I right in thinking that this tour, this line up, is pretty decent? Would you all agree? Not complete s—, is it? Hope to see y’all out there! What are we playing? Not sure yet, but considering the company, maybe we’ll have to pull out the big guns from time to time. In order to keep up, I mean.”
Check below for the full touring schedule.

Mastodon, Opeth, Ghost Teaming Up For N. American Tour

In a recent interview with Studio Brussel, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders of Mastodon confirmed a N. American tour with Swedish prog metal band Opeth and Swedish NWOBHM band Ghost. When asked about the future plans for the band, Sanders replied, “We go to Australia take part in the Soundwave Festival, which is going to be lovely… Take a short break. Do a North American tour with Opeth and Ghost.” As of now, no tour dates have been confirmed. Below are some videos you can check out to see how perfectly everything goes together.

Okay, my mind is blown. This might be one of the best lineups I’ve seen in a LONG time. Each of these bands has incredible music and the thought of getting to check out Ghost on the big stage is unreal. This is one of those shows that I’ll come to early, make sure I get a great view, and then I won’t move for the rest of the show. Beer server! Bring me more ale!

Official: Universal Acquires’ ‘Phasma Ex Machina’ Remake Rights

Although we already reported some of this months ago, we were asked to remove the story as the deal was far from complete. Deadline is reporting that Universal has now officially acquired remake rights to the awesome Phasma ex Machina, the small independent feature directing debut by Matt Osterman that was the toast of the genre film festival circuit.

The studio acquired the project as a pitch for a horror movie called Our House, and the studio has attached Gary Shore to direct the remake and Nathan Parker to write it.

Phasma ex Machina, which was retitled Ghost From the Machine when it was acquired by Screen Media and released on DVD and VOD, “ponders the grey area between life and death and how science can bridge the two. The protagonist is a young man who is raising his little brother after their parents die in a car crash. His desire to bring them back prompts him to invent a machine designed to be a conduit to the grey beyond, and his success proves dangerous to himself and everyone around him.

WWE Hires ‘Fido’ Director for Supernatural ‘Barricade’

Eric McCormack (“Trust Me,” Alien Trespass ) is starring in Barricade, the latest film from WWE Studios (you know, the guys behind See No Evil, and a little thing called “wrestling”). The deal marks the first time the company is making a picture that doesn’t star one of its WWE superstars.

What’s exciting about this project is that it’ll put Fido director Andrew Currie back behind the camera in Vancouver later this month. I was a huge fan of that movie; I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t.

Written by Michaelbrent Collings, “the supernatural thriller centers on a psychiatrist, seeking to find normalcy after the sudden passing of his wife, who takes his two kids to a remote cabin for healing and bonding. Their joy soon turns to despair when the family is terrorized by unknown forces and the father will stop at nothing to save them from peril.

Conner Dwelly (Conner Dwelly) and Ryan Grantham (Goblin, Altitude, Zombie Punch) are in negotiations to play the two kids.
