It’s been a while since I last had Lollipop Chainsaw on the mind. Suda 51′s quirky and colorful zombie chainsaw ‘em up wasn’t as memorable as I would’ve liked, but it was still a funny and mostly enjoyable game that definitely deserves a sequel. We may be one step closer to seeing such a thing happen, now that the game has sold over a million copies. The news comes from developer Grasshopper Manufacture’s Twitter page, where it was followed by a celebratory “Woot Woot!”
If you haven’t played the game, I called it as sweet as it is sour in my review. As much as I enjoy the idea of another Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned deserves it more. How about you — w Suda 51 game would you like to see more of?
Grasshopper Manufacture games really should get a subgenre to call their own. They’re universally strange, but I like that. As we wade through a sea of games with numbers after their titles, their games tend to provide a much-needed breath of fresh air. Studio CEO Goichi Suda (better known as Suda 51) has made a name for himself after bringing us vibrant and wacky punk rock romps like No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, and most recently with Lollipop Chainsaw. His next adventure looks just as wonderfully strange, too. If you don’t believe me, feel free to check out the game’s new trailer after the break.
Had Lollipop Chainsaw been developed by any other studio, the news that a game featuring a scantily clad chainsaw-wielding cheerleader who spends her free time kicking mountains of zombie ass sold well wouldn’t be all that surprising. However, this is a Suda 51 game, and his projects, which include Shadows of the Damned and No More Heroes, tend not to perform terribly well commercially. This makes the news that his studo has shipped 700,000 units worldwide just a little impressive. It’s also great news for fans of Suda 51′s work, because it could mean a potential sequel, or at the very least, more support for Grasshopper’s next game, the mysterious Killer Is Dead. In related news, if you’re still on the fence about the raunchy title, might I recommend reading our review?
