[BEST & WORST '12] Jorge Solis’ List of the Best Comics 2012!

It’s usually difficult to buy comic book issues every month. Most likely, I’ll wait till the issues are collected and buy the trade paperback. It’s easier for me to see how the story arc comes full circle. But often, the best comics are the ones I buy in single issues and still get the trade paperback as well. Here is my list of the best trade paperbacks to come out of 2012. READ MORE

Best Comics Of 2011: Lonmonster’s List

I’ve been reading comics since I can remember. I recall running around my house as a little boy with a towel tied loosely around my neck, pretending to be The Dark Knight, Superman, or Thor. Suffice it to say that comic books have always been an extremely important part of my life. However, this was the first year I was able to work as a critic for BD, and what a magnificent year it has been. Having to read comics and consider which ones belong on a “Best of the Year” list was quite intimidating at first, there are so many I love, so many that truly take the medium to a new plateau.

I had my list narrowed down to about fifteen titles, but when push came to shove, what it really came down to was, which books do I always have on the top of my pile week after week? Which books am I just bursting at the seams to read? Any of the books in the top 5 could have landed the spot as number 1, proving that it has been a groundbreaking year in the comics industry.

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – Tie! Green Wake #7 and Dardevil #6

This is highly unusual given that it’s only supposed to be my “pick” of the week, but it’s my column so I’ll do as I damn well please! I’m seriously bursting at the seams with excitement for both of these titles (which you probably know by now). To be frank, the new Daredevil is without a doubt one of the best ongoing books right now at Marvel. Green Wake on the other hand, is one of the best horror titles anywhere. While these two books may be completely distinct in almost every possible way, they are both truly commendable comics that deserve some attention. Read on for the skinny…

For horror nuts like us who thrive off of suspense, gore, and a good old-fashioned ghost story, there is no better time of the year than Halloween. There’s just something about the chilly fall breeze, the naked trees, the wind that whirls, calling out to the dead. This week is the perfect time to nestle up in your favorite chair by the window with a brand new horror story.

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Green Wake’ #6

By this point it’s become almost habitual to choose Green Wake as the GC Pick Of The Week. From the very first issue, Green Wake had my attention, and now, as lame as it sounds, it has my heart (you can make fun of me in the comments). Green Wake is the kind of mystery tale that leaves you feeling dirty on the inside because of how much pleasure you derive from such a grotesque world. It’s the kind of story you wish you had created. It’s the kind of horror tale that’s more than just blood and guts. Creators Kurtis J. Wiebe and Riley Rossmo fashioned an absorbing, relentless tale of horror and criminal suspense that took comic fans by storm over the summer months, and what better time to welcome the start of the new ongoing than Halloween. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Green Wake’ Vol. 1

Yes, there are some incredible new books coming out from DC this week, but ’Green Wake’ is my favorite book of the year so far. I can’t even begin to express how much I love this book, nor can I encourage you enough to read this mini-series. I warn you now that you may hate it because it can be confusing at times, but I believe having it in a single volume will reduce bewilderment. Kurtis J. Wiebe and Riley Rossmo have created a wonderfully dark world where ‘Twin Peaks’ meets ‘Silent Hill’. If you blew it the first time around and didn’t get the chance to read the single issues, this is your chance. ‘Green Wake’ is the fiercest horror debut of the year. Read on for the skinny…

REVIEW: ‘Green Wake’ Issue #5

Image’s Green Wake series perfectly balances moments of grievous depression and undying love, and this supposed-to-be-conclusion is no exception. In fact, it’s the best issue yet. From the moment you open issue #5, you will be blown away by how deeply into Morley’s mind it dives, how mysterious the town remains, and how beautifully dark the conclusion is. Green Wake was only supposed to be a mini-series, thank god Image decided to make it an ongoing starting in October, because this is hands down the best new horror comic I’ve read all year. GRAPHIC CONTENT PULL & HOLD: August 3rd, 2011

Welcome to the weekly previews for August 3rd, 2011 here at Graphic Content! Let me preface this week by saying that there are A LOT of good comics coming out this week. Though every week has it’s highlights, I believe this is the best of the summer with several books by Snyder, the start of Spider Island, and the second to last Flashpoint issue! Get ready for some time indoors this week because there are way too many books for you spend you days running around outside in the sun like a loser.

The truth is everyone would read all the books if they had the time and money, but in reality most of us don’t. Here you will find a little taste of some major comics being released each week, my take on them, and, as always, feels free to discuss below. Whether you have been into comics since you were a little one, or are new to the game, I’m here to help you decide which books are for you. I’ve picked out some comics I feel will stand out in the coming week and listed them under their respective publisher, with over a dozen previews of some of your favorite books such as ”AMAZING SPIDER-MAN”, “GATES OF GOTHAM”, and “SWEET TOOTH”. The Good Sh*t: Image’s ‘Green Wake’ #5 And ‘Screamland’ #3 – Plus 5 Page Previews

This week we are going to take a good, hard look at two titles that YOU, the reader should be reading. Don’t take this personally, Daddy isn’t yelling, he’s just emotional today and feeling rather chipper. Believe me, no amount of caffeine, nicotine, and or other form of mind altering method will shake this terrible thing from my bones. Someone, anyone, a Doctor for the dear Editor, please. For the love of all things holy man hurry, before it’s too late!

For a long time now we have been telling you that Image’s “GREEN WAKE” is one of the single best (Yes, better than your copy of “FLASHPOINT”, kids. Sorry)monthlies currently running, and by far the best mini-series in the genre all year long. But the sands of time are unforgiving little devils, and this week Riley Rossmo and Kurtis Wiebe will be ending the story with the most grotesque, bloody, and disturbing thing the likes of which you haven’t seen since the 2011 Betty White Calendar. Inside you’ll find a 5 page peek under the curtain and see if you catch anyone missing a top…or a face.

For fans of “GREEN WAKE” who will be undoubtedly spending the next several days picking their minds up off of the floor, the wall, and the ceiling, now would also be a good time to check out another more HIDDEN gem from Image entitled, “SCREAMLAND”. The series might be the literary version of comparing apples and oranges, but with a great mystery, great pacing, and an excellent cast of characters Christopher Sebola and Harold Sipe are able to bring to the table you would be hard pressed to find much better. So just in case you need any more convincing (Trust me: I’m an expert) you can check out a separate 5 page preview of the third ish in the series, which will also be hitting shelves tomorrow. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Johnny_Trouble – ‘American Vampire: Survival of The Fittest’ Issue #1

This week is going to be filled with awesome titles gracing the shelves of our local comic shops. That being said, I plan on dropping a lot of money on comics this week. However, I have chosen Scott Snyder’s “AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST” Issue #1 for my pick of the week. (This was originally tied with “GREENWAKE” for the staff pick.)

Every once in a while a book comes along that you pick up and think, man I wish I’d thought of this story, well my friends, Green Wake (Interview) is one of those. Two up and comers from Image Comics, Kurtis J. Wiebe (“The Intrepids”) and Riley Rossmo (“Proof”), bring you one of the weirdest debut comics of the year. Green Wake is dark, gritty, confusing and comparison can easily be drawn to the surrealist master, David Lynch. As such an odd series, it’s really no wonder it has given rise to some mixed reviews, receiving both praise and criticism from readers (really, reviews are all over the place). In Green Wake, Wiebe and Rossmo bring you into an ethereal world set alongside a suspenseful murder-mystery storyline, leaving you with an uncomfortable feeling in your gut. Whether you’ll love it or hate it, Green Wake is one book that deserves some attention. Read on for the skinny…
