‘The Legend’ Among Latest Batch Of Titles To Get Green-Lit On Steam

There are a lot of indie horror games looking to take advantage of the Internet-born Slenderman’s recent surge in popularity, and in a way, The Legend is among them. Only this horror game doesn’t have anything to do with Slenderman, instead it follows a new terrifying creature, which its developer has smartly kept shrouded in mystery. It’s also powered by the same engine the Crysis series uses, which means it’s gorgeous.

Today, Valve announced another batch of indie games that have gotten the green light for distribution on Steam. The Legend wasn’t the only one — check out the full list after the break.

In The Multiplayer Survival Horror Game ‘Damned,’ You’re The Hunter

9heads Games recently unveiled their second project, a multiplayer-centric survival horror game that puts you in the shoes (boots, hooves, whatever) of the bad thing that’s killing everyone. Now, before you get all up-in-arms about the multiplayer bit, don’t worry, it actually looks amazing. This is because in Damned, it’s being used in a really unique way. In it, up to five players will have the option of teaming up as a group to better their odds of survival while another player hunts them down. See it in action after the jump.

Survival Horror ‘Darkwood’ Indiegogo Campaign Is Live

The open-world survival horror game Darkwood looks amazing, but like so many other indie projects, its developer needs help. Acid Wizard Studio has launched an Indiegogo campaign to get the funding they need to help finish the game, and if enough people contribute there are very cool stretch goals waiting to be unlocked, including an “Epic” difficulty mode, DLC, and even two-player co-op.

For the unfamiliar, Darkwood is a top-down horror game that randomly generates a unique world every time you play. It’s about exploration, and carries many of the traits from the Roguelike genre — permadeath, character perks, and challenging gameplay — as well as weapon crafting and some intensely freaky environments. Head past the break for its quirky campaign video.

‘The Forest’ Is ‘The Descent’ Meets ‘Cannibal Holocaust’

Another horror game recently made its way onto Steam Greenlight, but this one isn’t quite like the rest. It’s an open world survival horror game that places you in a forest, alone, unarmed, and with a population of freaky pale cannibals that would very much like to eat you alive. You’ll need to learn how to start a fire, construct a shelter, and scavenge for food in order to survive. Even if you master that part, you’ll have to either hide from or defend against the forest’s hostile inhabitants. More after the jump, including a debut trailer.

Zombies And Slenderman Included In Sixth Batch Of Steam Greenlight Games

I hope you’re ready for even more undead goodness, because the sixth batch of Steam Greenlight games were revealed today, and it includes not one, but two zombie games. The first is one we’ve covered before — the turn-based RPG Dead State — and the other is Dead Trigger. The latter is a shooter that has already found significant success on mobile devices.

Also among the approved games is the Faceless. This is the Half-Life 2 mod that introduces four-player co-op into the Slenderman formula. Head past the break for the full list of greenlit titles.

Don’t Let This New Teaser For ‘The Legend’ Get In Your Head

The Legend is another indie horror game that aims to take the traits of the infamous Slenderman and apply them to a brand new creature — sort of like what Huntsman is doing. What this new “legend” is or what it looks like are still unknown, but I prefer my monsters shrouded in mystery, so I’m all for not revealing him/her/it. Developer Elder Productions has been releasing some freaky teasers lately (you can find the rest on the dev’s Youtube page), but this new entry is a little lighter than the rest, albeit still unnerving.

Take A Trip Down The Rabbit Hole With ‘The Apeiron Project’

There’s a new indie horror game trying to make it on Steam Greenlight, and it’s called The Apeiron Project. It’s a first person horror adventure game that puts you in the shoes of Steven, a man suffering from… wait for it… amnesia. He wakes up in a big old house, so I’m guessing the goal is to find the exit so he can find a gas station and get some Tylenol (that will make more sense after you watch the videos). Check it out below.

Slenderman Inspired ‘Huntsman: The Orphanage’ Among Newest Batch Of Greenlit Games On Steam

It’s no secret that I’m super pumped for Shadow Shifters’ upcoming Slenderman inspired indie horror game Huntsman: The Orphanage. It’s creepy, atmospheric, and brings with it a unique twist on the Slenderman subgenre that doesn’t revolve around collecting pages. It also has a mesmerizing Scottish caretaker that I’d very much like to have read me bedtime stories every night until the Huntsman comes and takes me away.

Earlier today Valve announced the fifth batch of titles that have been greenlit on Steam, including Huntsman: The Orphanage, Organ Trail: Director’s Cut, and several others you can find after the break. The team behind Huntsman are currently working on getting a playable demo that should be out soon.

This Is The Story Of ‘Huntsman: The Orphanage’ As Told By Grimhaven’s Troubled Caretaker

Jasper Croad is the caretaker at the Grimhaven Orphanage where twelve orphans mysteriously disappeared back in 1897. Understandably, this has had a pretty significant impact on the man’s psyche, as he holds himself responsible for the children’s disappearance. The orphans were taken by the Huntsman, a creature that shares some of the traits of the Slenderman in that he has a mean sense of style and enjoys taking things that don’t belong to him.

Huntsman: The Orphanage is one of the more promising takes on the budding Slenderman subgenre. One of the things I enjoy most about these games is they don’t rely on blood, gore, and violence to be scary. Don’t get me wrong, I love those things too, but it’s nice to get a brief reprieve from all that. Listen to Croad’s story after the break!

If You’re Aching For A New Fatal Frame, ‘DreadOut’ Has You Covered

Fatal Frame hasn’t had a serious presence in the states in some time, after the fourth game was released exclusively in Japan with no plans to officially bring it anywhere else. There’s always the video game black market, but you can’t get in without a trench coat and the Matrix was forever ago, so who still owns one of those, am I right? If you’re like me, than you’ve undoubtedly spent the last few years jonesing for the sweet, sweet paranormal horror that could only the Fatal Frame games offered. That’s why I’d very much like to introduce you to DreadOut, an indie horror game that’s currently fighting the good fight on Steam Greenlight. It looks great, and thanks to Indonesian musical artist SARASVATI, it should sound great too. See it in action after the jump.

Slenderman Inspired ‘Huntsman: The Orphanage’ Aims To Scare Us Without Using Blood And Gore

Yes, Huntsman: The Orphanage is another Slenderman inspired video game. Now before you write it off as another game in a growing list of indie horror titles that aim to capitalize on Slendy’s recent surge in popularity, you should know that this one looks amazing. For starters, it won’t have guns or gore, which I’m very happy to see in this era of quad-wielding and strategic dismemberment. So far, it’s the only Slenderman game I’ve seen that doesn’t actually feature Slenderman — instead its antagonist is a similar supernatural being called the Huntsman.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Slendy and the Huntsman are related. I base this theory on the fact that they both partake in the intensely creepy hobby of abducting people, and also because they each share a dapper sense of style. If I’m going to be abducted, I want the thing that whisks me away to some horrible torture realm to be well dressed.

Huntsman is among the top ten games on Steam Greenlight right now, so if you’d like to see it greenlit, I suggest voting for it here. More after the break!

Get Your Horror Fix With The ‘Slenderman’s Shadow’ Demo Before It Releases Tomorrow

Slenderman’s Shadow is another indie horror game that features the ultra popular Slenderman, but whereas Slender: The Eight Pages took place on one map, this one comes with nine. The basics are the same: you must complete your objective, such as collect pages that have been scattered about the map, before the superbly dressed Slenderman comes and whisks you away. It doesn’t strive to add much to the fledgling Slenderman subgenre in the same way as Haunt does, but it still looks like good fun for cheap.

After the break you’ll find a pre-release trailer that features many of the game’s environments, which range from hedge mazes to empty city streets. Slenderman’s Shadow releases tomorrow, January 12, for $6.99 on PC, Mac, and Linux.

Indie Game ‘They Breathe’ Brings An Unconventional Take On The Horror Genre

Puzzle platformer They Breathe isn’t your average horror game. Indie dev The Working Parts has taken a unique approach to the horror genre by placing you in the shoes, or… feet, rather, of a lone frog. The game is all about exploration and survival, and the latter revolves around a continuous need for oxygen, which is a treasured resource in this ecosystem. You’ll explore the depths of a flooded forest that hides many dangerous secrets, and there’s a meaning behind it all, though you’ll have to play it to discover what that is. There won’t be anyone to hold your hands here — or the frog equivalent of hands, anyway.

It looks like a strange game, and good thing too, because I like strange. You can grab the demo on Desura, or the full game on XBLA’s Indie store. They’re also working on getting the game released on Steam Greenlight, though for that to happen they’re going to need your vote.

Horror Games To Watch On Steam Greenlight, Part 4

A few weeks back Valve launched Steam Greenlight, a new program that gives developers another avenue to get their games out into the world by letting them upload their work and have the community vote on them. This is exciting for indie developers because of the extra exposure and early feedback they receive usually very early on in development, and there’s the added bonus that comes when the community gives enough support, eventually leading to the game getting distributed on Steam. Unsurprisingly, Greenlight has been popular so far. There are hundreds of indie titles being voted on by the Steam community right now, and with all these games to sift through, finding the best of them can prove difficult. This is why I’ve decided to scour the submissions in search of the best horror games submitted so far.
