While seeking an authentic Australian adventure, one unlucky backpacker learns the deepest, darkest secrets of the Outback’s most infamous serial killer.

Lured by the promise of an Australian holiday, backpackers Rutger, Katarina, and Paul visit the notorious Wolf Creek Crater. Their dream Outback adventure soon becomes a horrific reality when they encounter the site’s most infamous local, the last man any traveler to the region ever wants to meet; Mick Taylor (John Jarratt).

As the backpackers flee, Mick pursues them on an epic white knuckled rampage across hostile wasteland. Only one will remain to be dragged back to his lair to witness the true magnitude of his monstrosity. And if the last man standing is to have any hope of surviving where no one else has survived before, he’ll have to use every ounce of cunning to outwit the man behind the monster and become every bit as ruthless as the monster inside the man.

Bloody regular ‘Fear Has No Cure’ tipped us off to Australian website The Age, which has your first look at actor John Jarratt (left) as psychopath Mick Taylor with director Greg Mclean on the set of Wolf Creek 2 in South Australia. The pic is accompanied by a lengthy report from the set of the sequel that begins while seeking an authentic Australian adventure, one unlucky backpacker learns the deepest, darkest secrets of the Outback’s most infamous serial killer.

In explaining what took so long to get a sequel to the 2007 Sundance Film Festival smash hit off the ground, McLean Mclean says he did not want to be rushed into “a cheesy sequel,” but nor did he expect the gap between films to stretch quite this far. “If I’d known then what I know now about how long it would take to get this up, I’d probably have said yes to a sequel earlier.”

“I’m not really interested in gore and blood and stuff,” adds the Melbourne-based director, whose second feature, the $25 million crocodile film Rogue, might suggest otherwise. “I’m interested in why the character connected with Australian audiences. It’s not about being a horror film – it’s because Mick is about something else, something deep and dark in the Australian psyche.”

This is great news as the worst sequels aim too high on the gore and forget about the characters. Mick Taylor is a fantastic villain, and letting him deliver the suspense is right way to go. Personally, I can’t wait for this slasher to hit the festival scene next year. READ MORE

John Jarratt once again steps out as the hauntingly sadistic Mick Taylor in Wolf Creek 2, which began principal photography last week!

Shooting in South Australia, the film also stars Ryan Corr (Packed to the Rafters), Shannon Ashlyn (Puberty Blues, Devil’s Dust), and Philipe Klaus (Devil’s Dust, Rake).

Directed by Greg Mclean, written by Mclean and Aaron Sterns, and produced by Helen Leake (Swerve, Black and White, Heavens Burning), Greg Mclean and Steve Topic (Crawlspace), the sequel starts production seven years after the original Wolf Creek hit screens internationally. READ MORE

Kicking off this massive afternoon of news, Zac Efron, pictured, and Akiva Goldsman are teaming up for a mystery supernatural project at Warner Bros. titled The Falling, says THR. Efron will star in the film and produce via his Warners-based Ninjas Runnin’ Wild Productions and Goldsman’s Weed Road banner. Also on board to produce are husband-and-wife team Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold of Safehouse Pictures. Every effort is being made to protect the logline of the project, which is being described as “an edgy thriller centering around an otherworldly being.” The idea originated within the studio, which then presented it Goldsman and Efron. Goldsman and Harold, the screenwriter who worked on Warners’ upcoming Tom Cruise sci-fi movie All You Need Is Kill, then hammered out a story.

Simply Jodie has leaked out a trio of looks at Jodie Foster in Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, in theaters August 9. “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium – but that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. Max (Matt Damon) agrees to take on a life-threatening mission, one that could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”

Twitch is reporting that Wolf Creek 2 is finally a go! The site reports that Gregg McLean returns and that principle photography is already underway in Australia. John Jarratt, as reported multiple times, returns as the franchise villain. In the film, “While seeking an authentic Australian adventure, one unlucky backpacker learns the deepest, darkest secrets of the Outback’s most infamous serial killer.”

Lastly, inside we’ve added a new TV Spot for The Last Exorcism Part II, in theaters March 1. While director/writer Greg Mclean is busy setting the wheels in motion for Wold Creek 2, he’s also working on his debut graphic novel, Sebastian Hawks – Creature Hunter. The comic is set during the Victorian era and it follows Sebastian Hawks, English thrill-seeker and creature hunter, who is hired to rescue missing British explorers from “monsters in the snow”.

The book is currently being funded over at Pozible.com. The series is written by Tristan Jones (“Ghostbusters”) with artwork from Chris DiBari (“Pale Horse”). Head inside for the preview pages, video promo, and the official press release. READ MORE

‘Wolf Creek 2′ Rescued!

Screen Australia has come to the rescue of Wolf Creek 2. The sequel was supposed to start shooting earlier this year but the money fell apart (as it often does). Screen Australia closed their financing gap and now the film can move ahead. John Jarratt will reprise his role as serial killer Mick Taylor in the film from Greg McLean.

5 New Images Find Their Way Out Of Dix’s ‘Crawlspace’

From producer Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) comes Justin Dix’s Crawlspace, which stars Ditch Davey, Peta Sargeant, John Brumpton and Leslie Simpson. It’s for sale at the forthcoming Cannes market by Arclight’s Darclight label. We had a look at the first image a week or so ago, and now five more have landed.

Penned by Eddie Baroo, Justin Dix and Adam Patrick Foster, the pic, “Follows a squad of elite soldiers sent to infiltrate and extract the lead science team from Pine Gap, Australia’s top secret underground military compound, after it comes under attack from unknown forces. The mission is compromised when they encounter a young woman with no memory of who she is or how she came to be there. As they try to escape, the group quickly discovers all is not as it seems and the facility has become a testing ground for something far more sinister.”

The new pics definitely illustrate the vibe of the military compound, as well as provide a look into the film’s titular crawlspace. Head inside to take a look. READ MORE

‘Wolf Creek’ Director Ready To ‘Kill Me Three Times’

Director Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) has a new film in the works called Kill Me Three Times. He hasn’t started shooting yet, but Cargo (its sales, financing and production company) is pre-selling the rights at Cannes. It will star Alice Braga (pictured above; I Am Legend, Predators), Abbie Cornish (Limitless), Ben Mendelsohn (Killing Them Softly) and Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom). Shooting is set to begin near the end of the year in Australia.

The film “takes place in Eagle’s Nest, an Australian surfing town where a young woman is the thread that binds three tales of murder, blackmail and revenge.”

And McLean certainly sounds enthused. Per Screen Daily, “From the moment Larry [producer Laurence Malkin] sent me the script, to the moment I breathlessly put it down with the words, ‘I must make this movie’ pounding through my mind, the project has become an obsession. To have such great actors on board is a dream come true.”

If you like Wolf Creek you should probably be excited too.

Horror director, Greg Mclean, the man behind the Wolf Creek film, has a four part, bi-weekly online comic series set for release over the course of the next few weeks, titled Dark Axis. The series is published by Ape Entertainment and Diezel Punk, Mclean’s own company, and it ventures back to WW2 for an alternate history that involves Nazi monsters and machines (that’s a metaphor if I ever heard one) wreaking havoc all over Europe. Lionsgate Goes Low Budget With ‘Wolf Creek’ Director

Much Like Paramount’s Insurge Pictures, Lionsgate announced today a microbudget production initiative, which is focused exclusively on producing films with budgets of under $2 million.

Three films will kick off the slate, one of which comes from Aussie helmer Greg Mclean, the man responsible for both Wolf Creek and Rogue.

6 Miranda Drive is a supernatural thriller in the vein of Poltergesit. “Based on true events, the movie is about a family that unwittingly brings a supernatural force home with them from vacation. Feeding off their own fears, the evil presence threatens to destroy them from within as it takes over their lives and home, with terrifying results.”

Up to ten films will be produced each year under the microbudget umbrella. The initiative was inspired by and modeled on the runaway success of Lionsgate’s previous microbudget properties like The Blair Witch Project and the Saw franchise.

It was supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime in the Australian Outback – full of fun, sun and adventure. But what happened to a trio of twenty-something backpackers took a wrenching detour into the depths of unrelenting terror.
