[Exclusive] Interview: Alex de Campi Discusses Mutilation, Sex, and Evisceration In ‘Grindhouse: Doors at Midnight’

The concept for Dark Horse’s upcoming “Grindhouse: Doors at Midnight” is simple; tell a story that is packed with over-the-top sex and violence. Bringing the flavor of classic exploitation films to comics, “Grindhouse: Doors at Midnight” delivers four two-issue gore operas, starting with “Bee Vixens from Mars,” pitting a one-eyed Southern Latina deputy against lusty alien chicks bent on laying eggs in the entire male population! Writer Alex de Campi and artist Chris Peterson are teaming up to deliver a tale filled with aliens and small town tramps. The covers for the first issue will be provided by the brilliant Francesco Francavilla, and the variant cover is a busty rendition by Coop!

Bloody-Disgusting was given the inside scoop on “Grindhouse: Doors at Midnight” before the announcement at C2E2, and we caught up with writer Alex de Campi to discuss mutilation, sex, and evisceration. We’ve also got the exclusive preview of issue #1 below. For more on Dark Horse’s 2013 horror lineup, check out our interview with Scott Allie. READ MORE

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Machete’

When Grindhouse first entranced us in 2007, the faux trailers seemed to be the real talk of the exploitation opus, especially since almost everyone immediately expressed interest in making a feature-length version of their short. The initial skepticism surrounding the idea was entirely sound: these trailers were nothing more than a bunch of money shots strung together. In order to make them into a theatrical film, they would have to construct an actual narrative around the most interest arousing scene, have an actual plot, and be open to possible drastic changes, considering the format of each medium. For me personally, although I do like Rob Zombie’s Werewolf Women of the S.S. the least out of the batch, I always felt Robert Rodriguez’s Machete played it a little too safe when compared to the gonzo antics of Euro-horror, vaginal stabbings, and Nicolas Cage as Fu Manchu. However, after seeing Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis’ big screen tale of immigration, babes, and blood, I now know why Rodriguez was so excited about the character and his story of revenge and liberation: it’s plain ol’ FUN.

‘Machete’ Blu-Ray Cover Art And Release Date

Originally a fake trailer attached to the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double feature extravaganza Grindhouse, Ethan Manquis and Rodriguez’s full-length adaptation of Machete is making its way to Blu-Ray and DVD on January 4, 2011. Featuring an all-star cast including Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro and Jessica Alba, the balls-to-the-wall action flick tells the story of Machete, an ass-kicking ex-Federale who lays waste to anything that gets in his path. Double crossed and left for dead, he takes on hit men, vigilantes and a ruthless drug cartel as he makes his way towards the truth. Available as a 2-Disc Blu-ray with Digital Copy or a 1-Disc DVD, no specs have been released as of yet, other than the promise of “exclusive deleted scenes that reveal never-before-seen characters, twisting plot lines, and more bloody good action!” The cover art below is different front the previously released one, though this could just be the slipcase. Check back here for final release specs.

Grindhouse

Grindhouse – noun – A downtown movie theater – in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace of the ’30s and ’40s – known for “grinding out” non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies. From groundbreaking directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes the ultimate film experience: a double-bill of thrillers that will recall both filmmakers’ favorite exploitation films. “Grindhouse” will be presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. Tarantino’s film, “Death Proof,” is a rip-roaring slasher flick where the killer pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, while Rodriguez’s film explores an alien world eerily familiar to ours in “Planet Terror.” Welcome to the Grindhouse – it’ll tear you in two.

“Death Proof” stars Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd, Rose McGowan, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Marley Shelton, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Bacall, Eli Roth, Omar Doom; “Planet Terror” stars Freddy Rodriguez, Rose McGowan, Josh Brolin, Naveen Andrews, Marley Shelton, Michael Biehn, Stacy Ferguson, Jeff Fahey, Michael Parks
