The Bloody Benders

The scribe, a protege of Bryan Singer, based his script on the true story of the Benders, a husband, wife, son and daughter who ran a hotel in Kansas on the outskirts of the prairie in 1873. It might have been a precursor for the Bates Motel: As many as 20 guests checked in, and never checked out. The guests were robbed and murdered by their hosts, and the killers were never punished.

Crimson Peak

Coffin

The story: a scientist, Dr. Ashar Ahmad, finds a way to trap the soul at the moment of death in a sophisticated containment suit. When a tycoon orders the scientist killed, Ahmad manages to trap his own soul. Can the power of the suit help Ahmad save his kidnapped daughter? And what can Ahmad expect from life, now that he is dead?

The Witches

This Roald Dahl classic tells the scary, funny and imaginative tale of a seven-year-old boy who has a run-in with some real-life witches! “In fairy tales witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs. That is why they are so hard to catch.” Witches, as our hero learns, hate children. With the help of a friend and his somewhat-magical grandmother, our hero tries to expose the witches before they dispose of him.

The Orphanage (remake)

The 2007 pic was directed by del Toro protege Juan Antonio Bayona and centered on a woman who, upon returning to the orphanage where she grew up, discovers that her son’s imaginary friend is the same person who terrorized her when she was a child.

At the Mountains of Madness 3D

Long acknowledged as a master of nightmarish visions, H. P. Lovecraft established the genuineness and dignity of his own pioneering fiction in 1931 with his quintessential work of supernatural horror, At the Mountains of Madness. The deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition’s uncanny discoveries–and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization–is a milestone of macabre literature.

ALTERNATE: Universal Pictures’ H.P. Lovecraft adaptation that tells the story of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins (including strange fossils of unheard-of creatures and carved stones tens of millions of years old) and a dangerous secret of the City of the Old Ones that lay beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas.

Drood

In the book Simmons supposes that survival from a catastrophic train crash changed author Charles Dickens, plunging him into the depths of London depravity and possibly turning him to murder before he wrote his final novel, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.”

Frankenstein (Del Toro)

Retelling of the FRANKENSTEIN story.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Del Toro)

On “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” del Toro wants to stick more closely to Robert Louis Stevenson’s prose and explore the addictive high the repressed Jekyll experienced as his murderous alter ego.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio

Once there was a lonely woodcutter named Geppetto-who dreamed of having a boy of his own. So one day he carved a boy out of wood and named him Pinocchio. When the puppet comes to life, it’s Geppetto’s dream come true. Except Pinocchio turns out to be not such a nice boy after all. Pinocchio enjoys nothing better than creating mischief and playing mean tricks. As he discovers, being bad is much more fun than being good. For a while, anyway. Happily for Pinocchio, he will learn that there is much more to being a real boy than having fun.

The Haunted Mansion

Based on the Disney ride.

Trollhunters

Midnight Delivery

Pic follows a father who becomes a drug mule to save his son’s life.

Pacific Rim

Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

[TV] Guillermo del Toro’s “The Strain” Adds Two More

A day after casting the female lead, FX’s Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse pilot “The Strain” has added two more to its cast, reports THR.

Titanic‘s Jonathan Hyde and Inglourious BasterdsRichard Sammel, pictured, have boarded the Corey Stoll starrer.

Based on del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s book trilogy first published in 2009, “the story centers on a vampire virus that infects New York and the CDC doctor, Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, who investigates the case.

“House of Cards” breakout Corey Stoll will play Goodweather, the head of the CDC’s Canary Team in New York who is called upon to investigate a viral outbreak connected to an evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph will lead a team of New Yorkers as it wages a war and defends humanity.

Hyde, who played Ismay in James Cameron’s Titanic, will portray the series regular role of Eldritch Palmer, an elderly tycoon who’s the third-richest man in the world who has been an invalid since childhood. Though his life-long fight against his frail body, he’s developed a relentless drive to attain immortality by any means necessary.

Sammel, meanwhile, will play Thomas Eichorst, a mysterious figure from Professor Abraham Setrakian’s past whose re-emergence in New York is not a coincidence.

Behind-The-Scenes Video For ‘Pacific Rim’ Explores The Amazing Jaeger Piloting System

I love this behind the scenes glimpse (via IGN) at Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim because it shares and explores one of the movies most interesting concepts. If you’re a Jaeger pilot, your co-pilot has to know everything about you. Literally. I think this is the key to lending the film some immense human relationship stakes without having to break away from the action too much, the film combines the two.

In theaters July 12, “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. This is what I’m talking about. Warner Bros. have just released what they’re calling the “main trailer” for Pacific Rim and it’s f*cking monstrous! This – even more than the awesome Wondercon Trailer – has my dying to see the film. I love the color, I love the imagery and I love those damn Kaiju.

Here’s An Enormous Preserved Kaiju Skull From ‘Pacific Rim’

Warner Bros. have just released a new Pacific Rim image via Twitter that puts an enormous Kaiju skull on display in what looks like a museum! The tagline reads, “What once evoked fear now inspires awe.”

Also check out some new evidence of the first Kaiju attack on August 11th, 2013; the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco appears to have taken some serious damage.

The Creators Of ‘Mama’ On How A Cheetah Inspired The Film And Ideas For A Possible Prequel!

The Guillermo del Toro produced Mama, starring Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), will make its Blu-ray and DVD debut tomorrow May 7, 2013. With that in mind I recently hopped on the phone with the film’s director Andy Muschietti and his co-writer Barbara Muschietti to discuss the challenges of turning a 3 minute short into a full-fledged feature. Their well-timed nugget of inspiration came as a surprise to me, to say the least.

The film “is the story of two vanished girls whose parents were killed. When the girls reappear, their uncle and his girlfriend care for them, but that doesn’t mean their deceased mother is completely out of the picture.

Head inside for the interview, which includes a possible take on a Mama prequel. READ MORE
