Filming is officially underway in New Orleans on Hatchet III, the latest installment of the cult horror series from MPI/Dark Sky Films and ArieScrope Pictures.
Zach Galligan, who is best known for starring in 1980s classics Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, has joined the cast, as has Cody Blue Snider, the son of Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, and Rileah Vanderbilt, who plays a SWAT team member.
As previously announced, also heading to the Louisiana swamps: Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Diane Goldner (The Collector), Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) and The FP writer-director Jason Trost. Bear McCreary, the composer who worked on Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica and scored The Walking Dead, will be handling scoring duties for the movie.
Original Hatchet cameraman BJ McDonnell is making his directorial debut with Dark Sky Films and ArieScope Pictures’ horror sequel, which stars previously announced horror icons Danielle Harris and Kane Hodder as “Bayou Butcher” Victor Crowley. “The story finds Harris hunting down the true secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Crowley’s ghost terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.” Mears will play a brooding, pompous SWAT team leader who is sent in to contain the carnage strewn about the haunted swamp. Williams will play a fast-talking journalist who fancies herself an expert on the legend of supernatural stalker Crowley.
Victor Crowley is officially returning as pre-production is underway in New Orleans on Hatchet III, which has officially revealed the throwback cast.
Here’s who will be heading to the Louisiana swamps: Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Diane Goldner (The Collector) and The FP writer-director Jason Trost. Also officially added is The People Under the Stairs star Sean Whalen, whom Bloody Disgusting exclusively announced on April 25; it’s a nice bit of toldja so to those horror sites that reported we were wrong.

Dark Sky Films and Ariescope Pictures are pleased to officially announce that both Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris have joined the cast of Hatchet III, the next exciting chapter in the horror saga of swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley, which will be written and produced by Adam Green and directed by BJ McDonnell.
Kane Hodder portrayed the evil Crowley in the 2006 Hatchet and will continue in Hatchet 3. In the 2010 sequel, Danielle Harris took over the role of Marybeth, the young woman who, at the movie’s climax, managed to escape Crowley’s clutches (and, apparently, kill him). The new movie continues where Hatchet 2 left off, as a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.
Victor Crowley is the second modern horror icon played by Kane Hodder; he was the masked slasher Jason Voorhees in many of the Friday the 13th movies. Danielle Harris started her career as a child actress in Halloween 4 and starred in that series’ reboot as well as such shockers as Stake Land and Left for Dead.
With Danielle Harris now confirmed to return as Marybeth in Dark Sky Films’ Hatchet III, Bloody Disgusting exclusively learned that Sean Whalen (pictured inside), best known for roles in Wes Craven’s People Under the Stairs and Rob Halls’ FX heavy Laid to Rest, is also locked in for a trip to the bloody swamp to come face-to-face with Victor Crowley.
Hatchet 3 will be written and produced by series creator Adam Green who is handing the directing reigns over to longtime camera operator BJ McDonnell. It will continue where the story left off in Hatchet 2, as a young woman sought revenge on the malevolent Victor Crowley who killed her family while they were fishing in Louisiana swamp country.
Hatchet 3 is currently prepping and is about to shoot in and around New Orleans, Louisiana. ArieScope Pictures and Dark Sky Films will likely release the film sometime in 2013. READ MORE
I think a lot of us were assuming that Danielle Harris (Among Friends, Hatchet 2) would reprise her role as Marybeth in Hatchet 3, and now that assumption has been confirmed.
Speaking with OBX Entertainment Harris said, “I’m excited to be starting Hatchet III next. It’s going to be great.” This is from an appearance at this past weekend’s “Blood On The Beach” convention, and OBX claims she gave the statement yesterday. Given the timing and the fact that Hatchet 3 is currently prepping and is about to shoot in and around New Orleans, Louisiana – I’d say the margin for error is pretty low.

Wake Wood Writer Brendan McCarthy revealed to IFTN that up next for both David Keating and himself is The Cherry Tree: “At the moment we are developing a project called ‘The Cherry Tree,’ where a single Dad discovers his teenage daughter is having Satan’s baby, so that is lots of the same, familiar stuff. I want to bring Satan back because I think he deserves to get back into the movies!” Much that Wake Wood was very much inspired by Pet Sematary, it sounds like Cherry will be giving homage to Rosemary’s Baby.
Described as an homage to James Cameron’s Aliens, we’ve now received a English-subbed version of second trailer for CJ Entertainment’s (The Host, Thirst, and many, many more) Korean creature feature Sector 7 (Mining Area 7), which scores the first look at the film’s monster! Directed and produced by Kim Ji-hoon, the pic will be 3-D and is about a mutated creature runs amok in an oil prospecting ship. Ha Ji-won, who also starred in Youn’s disaster film Haeundae, will rejoin. Director Youn said that Mining Area 7 will be a Korean equivalent of the Alien films and the 3D visual will mainly be realized by converting, but considerable amount of footage will be shot in 3D from the beginning.
Lastly, Hatchet and Frozen director posted a lengthy blog that not only updated the status of Hatchet III, but also revealed that he’s working on a “monster art” doc by the name of Digging Up the Marrow. “I suppose that now is as good a time as any to also drop the news that my good friend (and my favorite artist of all time) Alex Pardee and I are working together on a documentary about “monster art” that we’ve already begun production on. We’ve been referring to the project as DIGGING UP THE MARROW- but don’t expect too many other details on it for awhile. It’s a documentary so production is going to be spread out over a long time- but if you love genre based art and have often wondered what kind of reality an artist’s fantastical creature design comes from, I think you’ll find this project fascinating.”
As for Hatchet III, you’ll find a long-winded response inside.
Update: Sources tell us she’s still in TALKS, and not signed on just yet.
Bloody Disgusting learned that Danielle Harriswill could return as Marybeth in Dark Sky Films’ Hatchet III, which is still in search of a director.
“ ‘Hatchet III’ will continue where the story left off in ‘Hatchet II,’ as a young woman sought revenge on the malevolent monster that killed her family while they were fishing in Louisiana swamp country.”
Franchise creator Adam Green is penning the screenplay, but it is unknown whether or not he’ll decide to direct.
Harris can be seen in the forthcoming Stake Land (in theaters April 22) and ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2, and starred in Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Halloween II.
